In the summer of 1983, I had the honour and privilege of shooting my first BC documentary in the Haida Gwaii: ReDiscovery - The Eagle's Gift. The award-winning film was released in 1984, broadcast nationally on CBC TV and internationally in over 70 countries. It makes it's modest debut on KZfaq, in a newly restored digital version of the original 16mm film. A priceless historical document that shares the images, voices, Haida songs and memories of remarkable people; and the powerful spirit of a timeless place. The film offers educators innovative teaching methods and will stimulate discussion about the natural world and indigenous culture.
Located at the north-west tip of the Haida Gwaii, on a long sandy beach (T’AALAN STL’ANG), is the most isolated youth camp in the world. ReDiscovery serves as an inspiration to communities searching for renewal and cultural approaches to youth programs. Haida Elders play a key role in sharing knowledge of their culture and bring dignity and wisdom to the program. A wide range of challenging activities serve to nurture the spirit, promote self-confidence and rekindle the desire to learn. ReDiscovery is a non-profit BC society that has operated since 1978. Noteworthy:
The traditional cedar, dug-out canoe, shown at the beginning of the film, was carved by Bill Reid and donated to the ReDiscovery program. The ReDiscovery youth camp's longhouse as shown in the film, is located in the ancient village of Kiusta and was built by the Haida.
