I like these multi-purpose amalgamation boxes. I will say the ruler of all of them is the Stream Deck. Especially for DCS where addon software can step up the display feedback on the buttons.

This far superior to stream deck, especially for VR users

Almost 300 and you can't even mount it in the center like the real thing and there's plenty of wasted space above the keypad. Why? They should have split the device into two (UFC + misc) and just remove the levers sticking out the front. This way it would actually fit on most desks and better represent the original controls. I'm sticking to the right side of the keyboard with a handy modifier on my joystick. Costs nothing, doesn't take up space, works perfectly.
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender 2 жыл бұрын
That would be because it's built to match a warthog throttle base, not to match a true UFC, certainly makes a sacrifice to do it, but then it's not designed for vertical mounting really. Certainly would love an alternate compact version all said!

$336 U.S. isn’t bad for what you get. With this control box plus all the buttons, switches, and dials on my Virpil HOTAS throttle and flight stick, plus my 32 button Stream Deck, I would be able to control almost everything in the F/A-18 and F-16 cockpits.

These are always great, I just wish they were cheaper...like, 1/2 the price. I get that the only way that will happen is if they are cheapened and mass-produced. Really limits sales though I'd imagine. $500+ CAD by the time it gets here is a crazy luxury item just to type in UFC...just ask my wife! 😉

I'm fully VR in DCS these days, I use 2 cougar MFDs and a buddyfox UFC, all adapted with little rubber keys I cut off old TV remote controls stuck on the imortant keys. This box looks great, but not sure I want to learn a whole load of new muscle memory switches again. Probably wait for VR hand tracking to improve.

If you can’t live without green backlighting, this could be the way to go. But you could get a DIY equivalent with even more controls for a third of the price (or lower).
@Name-ps9fx
@Name-ps9fx 2 жыл бұрын
Backlighting isn't too hard to do, engrave the letters on opaque white plastic, drill holes for 1/8" (3mm) leds (your choice of color), install and wire in parallel, use an LED dimmer circuit (EBay) and hey presto you have a custom backlighting with IRL dimming.

Cool thing, though with an external numpad you can do similar stuff. I have bought an external numpad as I didn't wanted to lose the normal numpad functionality. Which was in total a 15-20€ purchase. Though you need to play around as either I did with a pi/arduino or luamacros to get it running as a not normal numpad. Though the binding DCS stuff is not that hard and time consuming. I wrote a tool for that which lets you set controls for multiple aircraft in DCS at once. But nice that they offer the .diff.lua. Hopefully they maintain them, as every so often DCS refreshes the Hashes of certain bindings. So the customers in 1-2 years are not having trouble to get quickly going, with their approach.

If you do end up mounting this beside your desk, I feel like the hook and gear levers should have some sort of protection around them. I could imagine knocking a chair against it and breaking them.
@startrekmike
@startrekmike 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. This is my biggest problem with this design as well. Having the switches and the emergency jettison button on the front edge of the box really only serves to create problems with potential accidental breakage and even placement in a larger "simpit" setup. It doesn't help that it is really big for what it is and really could have been scaled down without sacrificing any functionality. In a lot of ways, the ground this covers is better covered with the (cheaper) Stream Deck XL and the Stream Deck XL is much easier to place in a desktop simpit environment.

Trouble is building a shield would be rather large, I didn't run into any issues, as on my table top it's higher than the arm rests, and if you're using it 'as intended' you'll have to go through the warthog throttle first in most cases. But i can certainly see the potential for it to happen.

Why didn't they include a row of six buttons along the top for the Viper Comm 1, Comm2, IFF, List, A-A, A-G functions ? So easy to do and and there is enough space at the top.

They should have made it inverted. Based mainly to Viper with round buttons to top row by using those radio knobs with push as such, then have the numpad + radio channel buttons as now, but place that four way switch to bottom like in Viper. But there is such for about 350 € that is fairly expensive for what it is.

You could say that for most flight sim peripherals, why bother with a HOTAS you could just use your keyboard along with a 360 controller.
@startrekmike
@startrekmike 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dasspapirfly There is a certain "bang for the buck" aspect to it. For DCS, you get real, irrefutable benefits from using a decent HOTAS, pedals, some kind of IR head tracking, and even some button boxes. You don't exactly "need" these things in the most literal sense but you get real benefits from having them. That said, there are going to be times (like this one) where the price, general design, and overall functionality don't really sync up in a favorable manner. This is a very expensive product that isn't terribly well designed.
@paristo
@paristo 2 жыл бұрын
As VR user these has all lost meaning with the hand tracking support in DCS since 2017 or something. You just use the virtual cockpit for everything with hands. Sure there is no tactile feedback but it is easily learned to quickly just perform all in cockpit. (not so good example how great it works but kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7dieM-g18zZl2g.html)

@@RedKiteRender That is true, but sad thing is that no one else takes VR as seriously as Facebook, and really invest to basic research and development. But same time it is awful how they don't make some top notch equipment for all that, but goes for cheapest only. I wanted to use Pimax, as they are only who push FOV front forward, but I don't want 8k per eye resolution. Just give me good sharp center resolution and just wide low resolution edges. And make them actually work. OpenXR should be future, but hopefully sooner than later.
@RedKiteRender
@RedKiteRender 2 жыл бұрын
@@paristo Steam have worked hard to create an open platform for VR users and devs, which allows everyone to coexist, even mix and match hardware. So whilst they've made less hardware, they have put a huge amount into trying to get VR as a whole to work. Facebook only has selfish interests to create their own ecosystem for money and social harvesting. They're not committed to PC VR and are happy to see it die if it means their VR is dominant. FB money subsidies the cost of the headsets because you are the product being bought. Makes me worry for the future of otherwise cool tech. I doubt FB will innovate in anyway useful to PC VR. And implementing all the cool new next gen tech is going to keep other headsets prices high.
