Actually is about STDS, back in the days the way would test for STDS by swabbing the inside of a dudes gentials with a cotton q-tip thingy. Hence the term, “cotton eye joe” cus now your little joe has a cotton in his eye from having unprotected sex 😅

Fun fact about this song. It is unclear what exactly it is about, but there are several versions: •It is literally about a man nicknamed Cotton Eyed Joe who stole the main character’s gf and left. Cotton-eyed Joe could be a black man with very light blue eyes, an alcoholic or a man with a cataract. •”Cotton-eyed” could be due to alcoholism, since it was broadly used at the time to refer to drunk people. The main character is an alcoholic and thus unable to get any pussy. •Syphilis. The STDs theory is considered to be the least likely one though and the one about stealing girlfriends the most likely one. One of the earliest published versions literally refers to Joe using a variation of the N word, so it is highly unlikely that he is a metaphor for a disease.
