The Lagrange point is actually really interesting. The "new" James Webb Space Telescope was placed at the second Lagrange point between Earth and the Sun which basically means it'll stay there without the need to use propellant to maintain its position :)

@RhynoD2
@RhynoD2 Жыл бұрын
Close but not quite: The Lagrange point means the telescope will orbit with the same period as the Earth, which ordinarily is not possible. Orbital period and orbital distance are linked - you can't change one without changing the other. Since JWST is farther away from the Sun, its orbital period should be longer than Earth's. In L2, gravity is balanced such that the telescope will orbit with the same period, which keeps the Earth between JWST and the Sun, so that Earth acts as a shield to keep the hot sunlight off the telescope. There are two types of Lagrange points, though: stable and unstable. In stable points, as the object drifts it will be pulled in the opposite direction of the drift, so that it tries to go back to the center and more or less stays there. In unstable points, drifting out of the point means the forces will pull it a little more in the same direction, so the tendency is to drift away from the point. L2 is an unstable point, so JWST will tend to drift out of L2 and will need to use propellant to move back towards it. That instability is somewhat beneficial. JWST is solar powered and needs to leave Earth's shadow periodically to recharge its batteries to continue its mission. So, it will occasionally peek out into sunlight, recharge, and then move back into Earth's shadow. It's more accurate to say that JWST is not at L2 but orbits around L2. If L2 were stable and JWST stayed in it, the telescope would still need to use propellant to *leave* L2 to get sunlight. Since the point is unstable, it can be allowed to wander away and use a little bit of fuel to get back into the shadow. The mission plan for JWST was 10 years, after which the propellant would be used up and it would inevitably drift permanently into sunlight. No propellant also means it couldn't align itself to view specific parts of space, so we can't control what it looks at. However, the mission was extended to 20 years after the telescope was deployed from the rocket that launched it. NASA anticipated needing to use some of the propellant on JWST to adjust its course as it flew to L2, since there was a margin for error in the trajectory set by the rocket when it deployed the telescope. Fortunately, the European Space Agency that supplied the rocket carefully selected the absolute best components available and had such a clean, precise launch of the JWST from the rocket that very little propellant was used by JWST to adjust its flight to L2, leaving a lot more to keep it in place.

A Lagrange Point is one of five points between the orbits of two massive celestial bodies where their combined gravitational pull results in an equilibrium on smaller objects orbiting there. Basically, if you put a satellite in one of the five Lagrange points in the Earth/Moon orbital system, it will maintain relative position in that orbit, so they're good locations for satellites and space stations. Also looking at footage of that game, it's like it was Nintendo's answer to the Genesis series Phantasy Star.

About the Lagrange points: imagine two bodies with significant masses (enough to have a noticeable gravitational pull) like planets, moons or stars. There are 5 points in space relative to these two bodies where their pulls cancel out, and if you put things like satellites in those points, they will be stable, gravitationally "locked" in those places. the James Webb Space Telescope is in one of those points, so they don't need to use energy to stabilize it's position relative to the Earth and the Sun. Pretty cool stuff!

A LaGrange point is where the James web telescope lies in space. Pretty much means instead of orbiting a planet, it kind of just "sits" in space, to put it simply. Anyways great episode as always. Very great you this should definitively be a reoccurring theme in future episodes!

When they started talking about Momotaro/Peach Baby, I knew EXACTLY what they were talking about. Not because I know that much about Japanese mythology, but specifically because of the graphic novel "Usagi Yojimbo" by Stan Sakai. In one of the books of the series, the main character, a Rabbit samurai named Usagi, tells the exact story they were referencing, but in that case, the baby was known as "Momo Usagi Taro." Highly recommend the series of Usagi Yojimbo. The series as a whole is highly influenced by Japanese myths and legends and is set in Feudal Japan with a twist- all the characters are anthropomorphized animals.

Ooohh, I love Karina's render. Something about those colors and screentones really works for me. It's also giving me oekaki vibes.

NES sprites were great to go with. Folks had to get creative to make readable sprites with three colors on a very limited palette and black. The palette limitations for 8-bit games is actually why Mario has mustache!

CIRCUS CHARLIE!!! I played so many hours of Circus Charlie on my ~powerjoy~ controller...thing. Absolutely wild to hear it mentioned outside of my childhood living room Edit: Also Adventure Island. For some reason my cousin called the main character the Garbagio Man, and to this day I don't know why

Have been rewatching Drawfee at random and this video made me realize that the Pokemon SV DLC/epilogue may be heavily influenced by Momotaro (Peach Boy) and his Dog, Monkey, and Pheasant companions. Unsure if anyone will care about or see this revelation, but it needs to be recorded somewhere.

LaGrange Point is also notable for being the only Famicom game to use the Konami VRC7 chip, which allowed for additional FM synth sound channels. Basically, it was a Famicom game, but it sounded more like a Sega Genesis/Megadrive game. There's also a fan translation patch available for this game!

Days since Cats reference reset to 0. Drawfee should do a challenge telephone challenge. For example: one artist gets a skull and plays the bone game, second artist takes that first art and draws the 90s cartoon verson of it, third artist draws the fursona (or sexy-human-sona, if it's an animal character) of the 90s cartoon, fourth artist draws halloween-sona of the fursona. Could even do it as speed draws, and pass on each finished piece ONLY to the next person, and then you all only get to see the full process and all of the reveals together.

I'm so happy to hear about this extremely relatable experience of growing up with weird bootleg games! I feel like a lot of the times you don't hear it on youtube because the folks who make gaming videos are largely middle class americans who grew up with the proper consoles, but so many of us started out on the weird famiclones playing random NES platformers hacked to have Mario in it (Grand Dad 7 and whatnot)

I’m sure it’s been suggested before, but You guys should all draw something based on the titles of bootleg plug-n-play 1,000,000 in one games, like “hitting mices” or “fruit pig” or whatever it’s called
