I've heard of CHD files but wasn't sure what the difference was so thanks for the explanation!

@@RetroCrisis I've seen quite a few videos over the years on compression formats and one thing many seem to miss is explaining the difference between the formats, even guides online are misleading and can become out of date quickly... CHD is not only a compression format but can also function as an archival format, that can compress the original format (split bin/cue format) and then decompress back to the original format maintaining the correct CRC's to be verified against a database. Once compressed to CHD it is imposable to verify if the dump is good, bad, or out of date when compressed to CHD.. It must be unpacked back to its original format for testing and checking.. While this sounds easy, it can be bad news as due to different versions, revisions to CHDMAN and out of date dumps ect, or the CHD has been created incorrectly which is discovered when unpacking the CHD you can end up in a real mess... The tools featured at wiki.recalbox.com/en/tutorials/utilities/rom-conversion/chdman is a good source for the scripts ect, however, depending on the system like Dreamcast for example, depending on the original GD-rom Dumps and how the original CHD was compressed, can lead to corruption when unpacking to verify if it is a good dump ect....their has been bug fixes and changes to both CHDman but some still remain... In my view a lot of confusion still remains when handling CHD format, both compressing and uncompressing and caution should be used when creating and unpacking CHDs... There is no information regarding what CHDMAN supports in terms of formats and what is and is not supported means its a bit of a lottery...

For anyone doing this on DVDs like PS2 games, it's recommended to use createdvd instead of createcd when using chdman. Make a copy of the CUE-GDI-ISO to CHD file and replace "createcd" with "createdvd", and save it with a different name for your DVD games.

For Linux users, I wrote a commandline Python script/program called tochd. It automates lot of stuff and is even able to convert zip and 7z archives directly into chd, automatically renaming file matching the archive name too and deleting all temporary files that were created alongside. It will also convert iso, gdi and other formats. I use CHD format for every system that supports it in RetroArch; over 10 systems, including Dreamcast and Playstation 2. Run it as tochd * in example, that is enough. It will figure out what file formats are supported and create only those, which are not already created.

Ah that's awesome. Is there a place to download it?

I used it on PS1, PS2, Saturn, Dreamcast ROMs. Used .cso for PSP, .rvz for GameCube, .wua for Wii U. Cut down a lot of space. However biggest difference maker was the games I deleted (finished games and games I didn't want anymore). Wouldn't start a clean up if I didn't start to use cdhman.

Is there a way to combine multiple ISO into one CHD? For example the Final Fantasy games on PS1 have multiple disc. It would be very convenient to have one ISO/CHD combined that's playable without having to swap disc.

@@RetroCrisis Thanks for testing this. In the past I tried PS1 games that were in pbp format but retroachievement said didn't match supported game. I'll look into CHD, much tidier in Retroarch just to have the one file. Thanks!
