To help with the boredom part, I do want to note that you can buy upgrades for your knives on Ebay! If you are bored of your delica, or maybe your benchmade griptillian, you can buy like blue titanium screws, new pocketclips or coloured standoffs! (and a lot more!). This way you add something special to your knife, and maybe give it that little touch of colour that it needed! I hope this helps someone, this way you can make your knives "interesting" again. Even a simple handmade lanyard could help! (All of these options are really cheap!)

+sjoerd stop This is definitely true, and some knives (the Hinderers, particularly) have entire industries built on customization and upgrades. Good comment!

Excellent points as always Nick. I really like the rent idea, that has helped me deal with all the money I've lost buying and selling. It's nice to know there are so many others out there who love this stuff like I do. A support group indeed lol. As far as taking a bath goes, I spent two years lusting over the xm-18. Finally I got up the nerve to buy one. Sold my two Reates and threw in another $150 cash. It was an amazing quality pry bar. It took me a few months to admit that it was not all I had built it up to be in my mind. As the Hinderer bubble burst and they started becoming available for less and less I couldn't bring myself to sell it because of the bath I would take. So I held onto it for another 3 months until I finally admitted defeat and sold it for half of what I paid. That one still hurts. My name is Scott and I'm a knife and gear addict.

I've owned 1 wristwatch for 19 years no problem. After the knife-ban year I am on 10 pc. and counting. I do have a problem.

Insightful and enjoyable vid. My biggest realization is that when one says "I would never spend $X (an outlandish but bugetable amount) for a knife/pen/bag, one will eventually spend $X for a knife/pen/bag that has become a holy grail type object.

One thing I have found helpful it taking a long time before making a purchase. Watching reviews, conducting research, and just plain old holding off can make the difference between a regrettable buy and a satisfying buy. In short, avoid impulsive purchases. It will save you money.

Great video! 1. Buying used or after the market discounts the hot must have item. Usually results in 30% discount. I found a $220 knife second hand knife on blade forums for $115.00 . If you buy right baths are less likely. Thanks for the video. Much appreciated 😎👍

I've had the chance to try out things, and now I know what I like and I know what I am willing to lose. I just made $950 off of a $150 purchase I sat on for a year because, at the time, I paid wayyyyy too much. Try new things, but your hobby isn't worth missing rent or your kids birthday party!

So many people buy things that they love the look of online only to hate how it feels or functions as soon as it arrives. It's just one of those things that comes with the death of most brick and mortar store shopping. If people could go to any knife counter at any sporting goods store and fondle a Sebenza, CRK may have 20-30% fewer sales. Hell, we've all ordered knives online that we easily could have picked up locally for the same price. People just have an amazing capacity for laziness and a desire for ultimate convenience.

My suffering was mostly spending money and only enjoying the new stuff for a short while. I stopped buying knives since I realised all I carry for EDC is a Victorinox classic SD + Spartan or Climber and use an Opinel for most outdoor cooking/BBQ situations. A Cold Steel code 4 is sleeping in my car and at this point I have no idea if it has started rusting yet since it doesn't get used at all. With watches.. I found what I love, a Seiko SPB037J1 on a leather strap and a Seiko Samurai. I got a Fenix E05 as a keychain, works well for whatever I need it for. I can't remember ever buying any other flashlight to be honest. Personally, I enjoy new gear but only for a week, the high is gone fast.. Even if it is a bit better it isn't going to change my life in any meaningful way either so I decided to stop buying stuff xD I do still love to watch gear videos for some reason..

At least buy from retailers that have a good return policy. Bladehq gives you 20 days to return a knife. Amazon is 30 days. I bought my first Buck knife, the vantage pro from Bladehq. I didn't like it from the beginning. Tiny flipper tab, hard to get a solid flip, very late lockup. I tried to convince myself to try to give it time, play with it and maybe after a week or two I'll find something to like about it. Nope, piece of garbage. Sent it back and got a WE 617. I always check the return policy before I buy an item. Had to send back a couple of Ganzos that were nightmares. I won't be buying any more of them. It's a very satisfying feeling sending back a knife and getting it out of my life, my money returned, and moving on to the next one.

At 6:40, where you start talking about thinking what you could do with the money instead of buying a knife... That's exactly how I reason many of my EDC gear purchases. I look at a bottle of liquor or a case of beer, and think "ehh...this will give me a few hours worth of enjoyment...but putting that $20 towards a ZT I'll carry every day, I'll get a lot more bang for my buck." ha

The way i see it, for what i do with my knives: open boxes and make fun of my friends for being scared at first when i showed them my poop knife (kershaw wrinkle 2), a decent quality thirty dollar knife is fine. if i lose it ill be sad for a minute or two and buy another. but i couldnt bring myself to buy an expensive knife because i dont have a job yet, and would be unable to get out of bed in the morning if i lost it. yeah nick loves those $500+ pieces of artistic beauty and genius engineering, but truth is the delica (or maybe even one of the rats) is all he needs to cut stuff effectively. I hope i never go down the path he does however he is one my favorite youtubers and i do plan to buy a casio oceanus one day.
