I am writing a themed family event memoir, I guess? I would have called it a psychological memoir but that isn't an option. It's about my relationship with a narcissistic mother and how that played out in my life between the ages of 12 and 14. Thanks for covering memoirs, Shaelin.

My memoirish story recounts my senior year of high school and the following summer before college. It’s like Less Than Zero meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Sort of dark with minimal humor, teen disillusionment and a lot of partying, but as truthful as I could be. Not to sound narcissistic but I’m pretty proud of it and it was a cathartic experience writing it.

I think I’m writing a memoir that lies somewhere between autobiographical and celebrity? I’m writing about how I find American ninja warrior and the lessons I learned from it. I was inspired by other sports memoirs. I’m struggling to find the balance between narrative and exposition

Would a memoir from a fictional character's pov fall under one of these categories or would that be closer to a novel?

My memoir is about me and my daughter and how I was forced to lie to her about being her older sister, instead of her mother, despite the fact that I was 27 when I gave birth to her. Is that an experience, theme, or family memoir or all 3?

So I’m starting the very difficult task of writing my own memoir about childhood abuse and poverty. In order for it to have the impact it needs the story itself spans most of my 36 years but I still believe it fall into the memoir category. I feel like my story hits too many themes and I’m worried that’s an issue . Such as back stories on family members, crime, childhood, survival, trauma, addiction, etc. I’m not too worried about if it’s commercial enough because my main goal it to help others by sharing my story. I know it’s an awful subject but it’s so very important and I would love to hear your input on this style of memoir! I’m currently reading The body keeps score and it’s really pushing me to get my story out there. Also would you suggest a ghost writer? And who pays for one?
@corneliadolian

I'm also reading The Body Keeps the Score! I'm a memoir-writing coach so I hope I can drop a few thoughts I had while reading your post. You're courageous for thinking about, grappling with, and writing through these heavy topics and it's beautiful that you want to help others who've survived similar traumas. 💗 I think yours could be a cross between Thematic and Autobiographical Memoir types. A hybrid where it's your story but these themes pop up a lot. And maybe there is an even greater theme or thread that links all those others. I say that if the theme seems too daunting, look instead for the thread that runs through the themes/topics. I would not suggest a ghostwriter, because there is so much power in writing it yourself. I would definitely suggest an editor (or multiple, if you'd like) once you've finished. But being the one to write it is transformational. Even if you then end up getting it heavily edited.

Thank you ! I admit to having difficulty with the speed of your delivery; too fast for me to fully absorb. Mentioned were several authors and their works. This info moved past me too quickly. I also admit that I’m quite older than you; perhaps those younger have no challenges in speaking or hearing rapidly moving narrative. Your presentation was helpful, but I’m wondering if some pauses would have helped the delivery. Thanks again

Hi I would describe my writing as A Memoir I've written so far 40000 words. just recently I've started conversations between two characters so my question is. does this become fiction because obviously I've made up the conversation cos I wasn't there , am I making sense? does this happen in a memoir? Dialogue between two other people. this is my first time writing sorry if I sound naive.

Can you mix fiction and nonfiction with your memoir
@grimeydanny4214
@grimeydanny4214 2 жыл бұрын
there's a semi-unofficial term for this! autofiction its totally fine to do, but you would have to sell it as fiction instead of as a memoir, because memoirs are 100% nonfiction but there's lots of successful autofiction works!

Well, I guess all memoirs are written in first person, otherwise, I would have stated that I'm writing a first person memoir. I once tried to write one, however, aren't memoirs for really famous, or popular people? I mean, that's usually what helps move the memoir. Who's going to want to read the life story of an obscure folk. . .?
