Thank you for everything you did for the hobby, and corals, and information, in the flip phone era, and for catching up with jake, where i find i get most of my info nowadays. This was super cool for folks like myself, who have watched ur videos for 15 years now it seems. Thank you, Than. Really appreciate everything you did. Saved me lots of bike rides to the library, if u had a video on that specific coral. Was such a neat time in the hobby that todays new hobbyists will never appreciate

This video and discussion took me way back. The achievements you all have made are beautiful and completely relevantly understood. The trouble is that no matter how beautiful and successful you go, failure is so inevitably close. I was the guy back in the 90's who had all the iwasakis, ets, gigantic diy reactors bumped up from the available market. I ran into, slowly but surely the questions. I had sps of all sorts growing beyond the surface, stuff showing up on the walls of my tank, sump and skimmer, and super advanced described fish flourishing and beautifully thriving! It was like a tiny world of my 180 gallon god creation. I was always reaching for more, more, more, but little by little the creep creeped up. Test results started not making sense, questions started raising, I'd make adjustments, bang out more with bigger this or that. At one point I was dissolving a 40lb bag of caribsea crushed coral in my giant diy reactor every 2 months! In the back of my mind I was racing, nobody to turn to for help, so I just kept pushing on trying to keep up with demand. Back then things overall were much much cheaper. One fish I had at that time cost me $70, that today runs nearly $900. I spent $1200 on my custom designed by myself 180 gallon tank built by a guy in st. Louis which maybe would be $5000 today. Start up costs were just a bandaid compared to the monthly cost of electricity consumption that I put into my parents basement!!! Back then the electric bill went from around $90/month to nearly $350/month! They didn't complain ever! I was lucky! The hobby has truly become much much more educated than I had way back then and I so much wish I had the sources of experience and knowledge back then that is available today. I'd just like to input my experience and mention the only thing that I never once considered which was this... When in doubt, cut it out ... When demand starts exceeding input YOU HAVE TO remove demand, or it WILL go to shit. Keep on keeping on! Love these videos! Keep learning, keep working! I love it!🤪

Really enjoyed this one.. Loved the B-roll footage. Couldn't help but notice how healthy the euphyllia (Aussie gold torch) looked even with flatworms. It's a great example that a healthy coral can still thrive with pests..

Loved this podcast…I listened while I was painting my tank stand. One recommendation I’d like to give Jake is to let your guest finish his answers to your questions. I noticed you have a habit of interrupting with an agreement or comparison to what you do with your systems…and your guest gets side tracked, or you move on to the next question and he doesn’t finish his answer

Than is one of the very best on this platform. His Coral Spotlight series alone informed much of my early foundations in coral husbandry. In an internet filled with flash, hype, and short term memory; he certainly took the time to swim against the current to put out quality and useful insights. It was greatly appreciated. Good discussion.

Most freshwater tanks do not have sumps for a filter roller. hang on back maybe... then it would have to be small and it would still be an eyesore. Nice conversation!
