It's also worth noting they're less prone to disease than tangs! They do have venomous spines though so don't handle them (not that you ever would 😅)

For smaller tanks, a Fiji/Bicolour foxfaces are good. I have one in a 200g with lots of live rock, after cycling my tank was full of gha, after adding the foxface, it was all gone within a week.

When I bought my foxface the guy at the store said the day before he was cleaning above the tank and the foxface got spooked, jumped out and stuck into his arm with his venemous spines haha luckily I never had such issues he was always a model citizen for me and even ate out of my hand. Not to mention he never harmed a coral and devoured any and all bubble algea. Unfortunately I had to rehome him as he grew to large before I was able to upgrade my tank.

Had one after seeing all the reviews. In less than a week he was eating my LPS and Softies. Tank looked like a glitter bomb had gone off after he sat pulling the heads off my GSP and they flowed round the tank. Looked good but had to return him. Wasn't easy to catch in the slightest for me even with 2 people. Shame though as they're lovely fish to watch.

My fox face decided that it wanted an expensive snack and took a bite out of my clam. My poor clam coward for 10 mins as it was worried it would do it again. It's not like I haven't got algea to eat, he was just was extra hungry that day. I feed him some flake food at 1ish most days to stop him biting at clammy and touch wood he has stopped. But he has a lovely personality, I find he is the peacemaker in my tank.

I lost my Japanese Swallow Tail Angel, Coral Beauty Angel, and my 6 line wrasse. Get a acclamation box or even a clear fridge organiser box and drill some holes in it for water flow and then either get one with a lid and again drill holes in it or put a net cover over it and put a mirror decent sized mirror in front of your tank for at least 2 weeks and then put the foxface in and leave the mirror for another week. And everything should go smoothly!

Whoa, Alex, thanks for taking the time to reply personally! I’ve been a fan of your videos for a while already and I must say they’ve helped me a lot as I’m about to enter this amazing hobby. As long as my LFS can get One Spots in at smaller sizes for me, I may well pick one over a Yellow Tang! Also less trouble with my Butterflyfish as my planned trio of Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish will also be laterally compressed. My tank will be a 6x2.3x1.8 183 by the way, custom built tank a bit wider than a standard 6-2-2 180 and a bit shorter. Keep it up!

My experience with a foxface. Yeah absolutely algae eating machine, that said you can see by their mouth they are specialized in how they do it compared to something like a bristletooth tang, one of the only fish I've seen that actually eats bubble algae, and just about any type of green algae (won't touch dinos or cyano unfortunately). That said I got rid of my Foxface, 300 gallon tub that was holding fish for way too long and he did get big, 8" specimen in the store.. yeah that sounds about right for what I had, few years to get there? sure but any success in this hobby is measured in years, not in months, and I'm personally against the "I'll trade it when it gets too big" mentality. Now I was downgrading to a 200 gallon tank when I got rid of him, but the main reason I got rid of him is he was definitely harassing my tangs, specifically my purple tang, chasing and nibbling at the tail. So yeah they are piggies which is great for eating algae, but the piggy mentality makes them aggressive for food too.

Hey, I have a regular foxface. Does it only eat algae? I haven't seen it want to eat shrimp Flakes (extreme) but he also doesn't touch my green nori strips. It's a fairly new tank... like 3 months and I haven't had an algea outbreak. I had one spike of diatoms but my turbos and conch instantly... like next day... removed it. Now I'm worried I might be starving my fish. I was told he would be a monster on the Nore so I felt safe buying him. He is new... like 2 weeks new. So maybe that's why? He's a VERY shy fish.
