Dude you should be getting some serious sponsors with the guest lineup you've had the past few months. Even if that's not your thing, you're doing a great job! Thanks!

Great cold water question Deven. Where I get my live sand the water ranges from about 53 degrees in January to 85 degrees in August. That's a huge temp swing. I think some colder water bacteria are able to tolerate warmer temps depending on how warm their native water gets in the summer months. Another thing I find interesting is the salinity swings. I've seen HUGE salinity swings when there's a lot of rain. This may only be near shore, because I've never measured offshore. I suspect it is less the father offshore you go.

I'm knocked by someone high profile for admitting that I cycle with frags. Just something I always did because I figured we seed bacteria and Coraline etc and there is likely some beneficial seeding done by the corals to a degree. I mean new sps only tanks with an ultra-low bioload and half a dozen small cheap frags,. Sure, I have to brush diatoms from them but that's about it, they are used for this purpose as opposed to them being the final corals in the display or a nice acro but these frags usually do well.. tho that's probably a secondary thing. Id love o hear this guys thoughts on it

Great topic. I’ve been using AquaBiomics on a monthly subscription since January. Very informative and Eli’s personal comments on the sample are excellent.

Thats was really awsome, really like this kind of discussion, and the carbon dosing aspect blow my mind, that we actualy grow a different kind of bacteria that overtake the place of the nutrigene one 🤯.

so much to learn! im excited to have Eli again to dig deeper in the future. I think i'm going to do a test then do a stream with him to analyze it! :D

Sever have you guys at Aquaforest done these kinds of microbiome / DNA tests by any chance? One thing I’d be worried about is Life Source potentially containing ich or uronema for instance.

Have a background in marine biology and environmental sciences. I think it's about "the right" diversity as you touched on. Technically, pathogens would contribute to diversity if they didn't detract from the rest of the microbial community. Clearly it's too early for us to really tell exactly what the 'right' community looks like, but the prospects are exciting. Even further down the line, I wonder if we'll get to the point where we can strive to achieve the 'right' bacterial communities that are optimal for certain kinds of habitats/tanks e.g. this community doesn't look anything like the one we see in the ocean, but has been demonstrated to result in higher growth and greater robustness in LPS. We're at that point in our collective knowledge where we rely on mimicry (of the ocean) because we don't know enough about or have enough control that we can generally move microbial levers with any real intent. Exciting times ahead!

100% agree! I know this is still very young (atleast for reef tanks) but i'm excited for the new discoverys that will come as we build that knowledgebase!

I doubt Pods will kill off all the Uronema only because they are so often found in the gut, anal canal, etc of the fish. Pods might reduce the overall numbers though. It would be interesting to see the impact they make if any at all. Uronema are the most annoying ciliated protozoan on the planet.

Are off the shelf products like AF life source and miracle mud appropriate substitutes for introducing diversity?
@ReefDudes
@ReefDudes 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what the shelf life is but I added a back to my sump last week. :) I would guess it would last quite a while as long as it is t in extreme temperatures

@@ReefDudes Would be interesting to see a sample from what is actually in products like these. I would imagine based off your conversation with Eli that the longer it sits on the shelf the less diversity there will be. So awesome that Eli is doing this work though, I can't wait to see what the future holds in this field.

This was a good one. The question I have now is how bad is it for reef tank to run uv since it kills the free floating. Does it matter if the surface bacteria is ok
@ReefDudes
@ReefDudes 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if it’s good or bad directly but it will affect which bacteria is more dominant in the tank. As the free floaters will have a minimal population. I’ll see if I can dig into that more next time I have him on :)

Technology causes problems that further technology fixes and the beat goes on. Time to back to old school basics and quit over stripping and let your tank find itself.

Def some truth there.. we went from nutrient issues being the problem to tanks too clean! (well i still battle them! haha) The technology is certainly changing and i think its very easy to over filter these days.
