What's the best size for a reef tank?

Do you need a big aquarium to build a great reef tank? Nope! You can build a great reef tank at any size from a canning jar up to your local neighborhood lagoon - it all comes down to two things. What do you want to keep in your reef tank? How much money do you have to spend now, and down the road for maintenance?
Equipment and maintenance on a smaller tank is going to be orders of magnitude cheaper than on a big tank like mine. I even regret buying such a large tank sometimes, but my Achilles Tang makes up for it. I built by tank around the needs of my fish, my Achilles tang in particular. You should do the same thing. Take a look at websites like LiveAquaria - not to buy anything, but just to see what sorts of fish you might keep. Write down the names, do some research about their care. Some, like deep water fish, might like subdued lighting or cooler tank temperatures. Others, like the Achilles tang which lives in shallow water and waves, need large tanks with exceptional amounts of flow. Knowing the requirements for the fish, coral, shrimp, or whatever you want to keep will let you make an informed decision about the aquarium that would best house them all.

Hello ReefMan! Just wanted to reach out and thankyou for all of your high quality content. I just started a nano reef tank with a 13 gal. Fluval and have found all of your videos and advice very useful. It's currently home to a tail spot blenny I've named Benny, a fireshrimp which is thus far un-named, a Darwin Misbar Clownifish namea d Darwin (not very creative I know however, it seems to fit him quite well and a few baby lps corals. Following your advice I've had great success with this set-up and I value the knowledge you have shared tremendously. Thankyou!!!

Adding my .02. For the Al Gore. I think a 90 cube would be a good reef tank compromise. You could run One light and not to much $$$ for the water and salt for water changes. You still get the stability of a large tank but can get away with running smaller/less expensive equipment. If you know what I mean. Plus I don’t think the tang police would get ya if you were to drop one or two smaller ones in it. 😉

I really like cube tanks!! I’ve wanted to try a planted cube tank with seahorses for a while.

In general I think tangs do like larger tanks, but I’d be ok with something like a kole tang in a 90 cube.

I noticed that prices of tanks goes up exponentially with size. I wonder if the price of setting up two 120 tanks is cheaper than single 240 tank.
@ReefMan

That would be an interesting thing to price out. I bet one tank would be cheaper, I think the incremental price on pumps for a larger tank wouldn’t be as much as buying two smaller ones. Of course, you’re supposed to have extra backup pumps for critical things like return pumps but I’m not sure how many of us do that.

do you think even smaller tanks need a protein skimmer (
@ReefMan
@ReefMan 2 жыл бұрын
No, I don’t think so. You could get a surface skimmer though and it’ll help to remove the proteins and such that collect on the surface of the water. There are also some nice small skimmers these days too if you do want one.

@@ReefMan Not bad. I like the 36” width but I’m personally a bit worried that it’s hard to clean. However it makes for lots of good aquascaping opportunities.

@@ReefMan I did the math and the display alone rounds out to about 270 gallons: 72 x 36 x 24 divided by 231.
