On September 6, 2002, Elliott Randall, with the help of his pal Darrell Nutt (Me) performed at Neptune's in Fort Myers, FL. The two hour show featured AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams, Paul Fleisher (Lou Reed), and area professional musicians Danny Shepard, Steve McDougall and Kelly Fagan-Eakins. The audience was ecstatic and asked for two encores that evening. This is "Reelin' In The Years" by Steely Dan which Elliott played guitar on the original recording.

Indeed it looks just like the exact guitar he recorded with. The modified humbucker pickup in the neck position was a total surprise to me. Most people would put that in the bridge position. Gives him that special sound (fatter than bridge).

I have no doubt that screaming Altec speakers were the main tone driver in the original version. I have some Altecs and they are so distinctive. Playing through a SVT head might have had a lesser effect on the guitar tine shaping frequencies and hence more tone from the Altecs. For tone, he just needs those speakers.

Elliot Randall is a true master with that guitar in his hands. There's a reason so many chose Randall as a sessions player. Jimmy Page named Randall's riff from "Reeling in the Years" as his favorite guitar solo of all time in a 1999 interview with Classic Rock. He rated it a 12 out of 10! That's some seriously high praise especially coming from JP.

People commenting about how they can't believe how good Cliff Williams is. Just because he played in AC/DC he is pigeonholed as just a basic rock player. More often than not, these types of players tend to be the best musicians due to them having flexibility to play many different genre's of music. It was awesome to get to see him play on song like this and get the recognition he deserves. Cheers. CJ.

@@DarrellNutt Wow -- this knocks me out! One of my favorite tones and solos of all time! Before the 'Dan' album came out, I stumbled across Randall's Island in a department store cutout section, for 97 cents or so. I'd never heard of Elliott, but it looked interesting based upon the song titles and I risked a buck... It was money well spent, and got a lot of play at my apartment. Sometime later I heard the Dan's Do It Again, and was lukewarm to it. But then Reelin' came out, and I did an aural double-take when I heard the intro. I KNEW THAT TONE INSTANTLY. My mind went right to Sour Flower. Well, we didn't have the internet to look things up back then, but I was solidly convinced that it was Elliott making that beautiful guitar art. What a masterpiece and what a thrill -- who says you Can't Buy one? -- to see him smiling and magnificently recreating it after so many years! Please tell your friend Elliott thanks for the original memory and, and to you for making a new one in 2020! At least one good thing came from that godforsaken disaster of a year!

Mr. Randall aside; my opinion is that this video is so fabulous to watch because the overall sound was just superb. The lead vocalist was awesome and the lady on backing vocals (Kelly) lent a wonderful quality to the performance. All the musicians gave 100% of their talent to this production and a special mention should go out to the drummer who kept it all together and closed out the show with a very professional drum roll. This truly was a befitting tribute to SD, and with Elliott thrown into the mix there really is nothing more to say. Regards!

Thank you so much, Nick! Yeah, everybody stepped up and nailed the whole show! Don’t know if you noticed, but Cliff Williams on bass guitar is from AC/DC. And the other guitarist, Danny Shepard, is one of the most well respected guitarist in our area. I love playing shows in big clubs where it’s way more intimate than a concert situation. We definitely felt the people in the audience that night.

@@DarrellNutt Hi Darrell and a belated happy New Year to you and yours. Many thanks for your reply and, yes, I did of course see Cliff on bass thoroughly enjoying himself. He too would very well echo your sentiment regarding the absolute delight in playing smaller venues, and for you personally it would have been fabulous playing the drums in synch with his bass lines. Not being from your area I hadn't heard of Danny but his musicianship was very much in evidence for all to see, as clearly apparent from his facial expressions. I'm nearly 68 years old and, like many, mourn the loss of the musical styles so prominent in the 60's and 70's. The art of songwriting has sadly taken quite a nose-dive in the decades following, in my humble opinion. Long may you continue to promote the great sounds from yesteryear for all of us to enjoy! Warmest regards, Nick Harvey.

I played tenor sax with Elliot and the Escorts in NYC when I was in high school, Elliot always had local gigs. 1963-65 he can burn the house down too!I was 15-16 and attended the HS of Performing Arts, we worked all over and I never had a work permit, Never realized what a monster guitarist he was since we played Beatles songs..lol
