I think Asia's analogy about how "normal" people today would react to this situation is unfortunately framed by how these days the media and internet have to inject drama and conflict into everything. The people in this movie WERE normal people, and if you're in a healthy, mature monogamous marriage - which is a more binding commitment than simply an unmarried relationship - there is a deep, abiding trust at its core. That's the reason Arthur can confidently let her spend a couple of days alone with her childhood friend. It's also what makes this movie so refreshing. It never devolves into a Kardashian-like squabble fest of jealousy and fragile egos.

the director wrote it in a way where these ppl are crossing boundaries tho. they arnt perfect. arthur was done very wrong in many moments regardless of the deep meaning of her own personal life. its showing multiple faces. what happened WASNT okay in any marriage. arthur and her relationship wasnt very healthy at all. trust doesnt mean both are happy. she clearly vocally told him that her childhood lover was everything hes not multiple times and barely re assured him once when he seeked it openly. theres 2 seperated stories. it isnt to say omg what a healthy relationship and this is totally okay.. its legit complicated past lives of the what ifs and the faces of those what ifs.

I understand what she was trying to say. She really meant "typical" person, not normal.

So many levels of cultural nuance in this movie that I think applies to so many of us that have either moved away or are immigrants in a new homeland. It's all really bittersweet. 😭 Interesting trivia: When Hae Sung & Arthur meet for the first time, it is actually the first time the actors (Teo Yoo & John Magaro) meet too! Director Celine Song was very, very particular about how she wanted rehearsals for this movie, as it was also her first film. Her first film ended up nominated for TWO OSCARS. 😭 Incredible talent all around, thank you for reacting Asia & BJ 🤗🤗

Also the way that, even for bilingual immigrants who are completely fluent in the new language, there can be levels of intimacy in the old language that on a deep emotional level aren't quite available in the new language. Bilingual adults who weren't bilingual 12-year-olds know what I mean.

One of my favorite movies in a long time. I feel we can relate to this story whether we think it’s a love story or a homesick/didn’t get a chance to grow up in a homeland. Definitely makes me tear up in the final scene.

hae sung at the very least needed closure. it's about what could have been. nora will never have the same connection for arthur she has with hae sung but real life isn't a fairy tale. sometimes you've made your choices. your life is going down this path and trying to go back just doesn't make sense. how they all interacted is in fact normal for a lot of people. in most american movies, you expected an affair or some dramatic rage from the husband. we've been conditioned to these mostly ridiculous narratives to the point where it's predictably immature, a jerry springer episode. nora was crying over that life that might have been and now not being able to have it as even a scattered daydream.

I believe in reincarnation. What started it all for me was a casual reading of the news one day and reading a headline about a kid in New Jersey who was describing the events at the World Trace Center of September 11th 2001. I didn't bother with the rest of the story. I later started to learn about this and I remembered that headline. I looked up the story and found it. It was about a mother who had a child that was having nightmares about September 11th 2001. The news had long since forgotten the events and there was no way that child could have come across that information. The child knew his previous first, last name and even remembered his previous family plus occupation. With so much information the mother was able to look up his information and found who her son was in his previous life. The really big mystery around reincarnation is it isn't random. For example, most people reincarnate about 5 to 6 years after their death and they tend to come back around the same geographic location. In other words, if you die in the West of the United States you are likely to come back around that area and not come back as an Italian or Swedish person. This rabbit hole goes very deep and there is so much to unpack. Too much for a simple comment. I didn't want to believe this, it almost found me and its not subject to interpretation, there really seems to be an order to things that can't be tampered with by mere will of man. By the way, some reincarnated souls have known each other in their previous life. Be kind to others because "others" may just be an illusion.

Great discussion. I think this was a complex movie, but to a certain extent this was about trust. That’s why her husband loved her enough to give her the freedom to spend time with childhood love, and trust she would come back to him.

I love this one so much, Asia and BJ! ❤‍🩹 It did something most movies aren't brave enough to do... it had the characters remain honorable. A typical version might've had them get sexual... a totally normal inclination in their situation. But it's harder to retain a chaste dignity. It was interesting to see. 🔸 All hail writer/director Celine Song.
