The backstory between Jack and Beckett is that Beckett hired Jack to deliver some cargo for him on his ship The Salty Wench. But Jack learned that the cargo was 100 slaves and jack couldn't go through with it, "People aren't Cargo mate.". When Beckett learned of him freeing the slaves he branded Jack as a pirate and burned his ship down. So Jack made a deal with Davy Jones, the sailor equivalent as the devil, to bring his ship back now blacked and renamed the Balck Pearl in exchange for his soul. That's why Jones wanted 100 souls to mock Jack as it was him free 100 that branded him a pirate.

I think those slaves he freed are the people in the village when they visit Tia Dalma. Thats why they all like him. And they all had candles lit in honor of him when the crew goes back to the village at the end of the movie after he dies.

This trilogy really has the best movie endings. The first one with jacks: “drink up me harties yo ho” and snaps the compass closed as the screen goes black. Then this one with Barbosa coming back and taking his bite of the desired apple with his monkey back at his shoulder. And the third ending is great too. It wraps up the main storyline but did leave it open to sequels which they used.

Davy Jones was never mentioned in the first one, however the term "Davy Jones' Locker is a metaphor for the bottom of the sea" which is commonly used by sailors. In modern literature, Davy Jones has become somewhat of a boogeyman akin to the grim reaper of the sea, where he will either make you into his crew member or lock you in his locker.

Davy Jones is something of a legend of the seas among sailers, some great sailers who became something of the Grim Reaper for all who died at sea, his Locker is like a type of hell but completely separate from the basic afterlife. In some stories, Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman was something of a boogeyman tale on the seas

So about Davy Jones: He's not wearing a squid mask. It's all CGI. This movie has some of the best CGI I've seen that still holds up to this day. He was also meant to be acting scarier, but Bill Nighy put on a more humorous style that the filmmakers did not expect, but really loved.

One of the details in this film is how it foreshadows Jack's passing. In his opening scene, he had to escape the Turkish prison by getting inside a coffin. Later, during the windmill fight, he falls into a grave. Such a great series, I watch the first three films at least once a year.

Fyi there is a deleted/extended scene between Jack and Cutler Beckett that takes place in this movie, or the next. They talk about how Jack used to work for Cutler Beckett and used to be Captain of this ship called the Wicked Wench (that becomes the Black Pearl later), Backett told Jack to transport slaves to an island. But instead, Jack freed them, and that is how Jack got his "P" brand. Beckett also sunk his ship as punishment for freeing the slaves. So, Jack went to Davy Jones to make a deal to raise his ship and let him be Captain of it for 13 years. So, Davy Jones did raise his ship and it turned from the Wicked Wench into the Black Pearl. So this movie's permise is that Jack's 13 years are up. He has to become a part of Davy Jones's crew, or he will be killed and taken to Davy Jones's Locker.

Cutler's connection to Sparrow: in the first film, Norrington finds the "P" brand on Sparrow's arm and says "Had a run-in with the East India Trading Company, have we?". In this movie, Cutler - who is in charge of the East India Company forces - holds up a hot poker with the same "P" on it and makes the comment about leaving a mark on Sparrow. Sparrow was clearly captured and branded by Cutler at some point.

[ 13:11 ] According to some comments I saw around the internet, Captain Teague (che keeper of the Code seen in movie 3) made a child with a woman from this very same cannibal tribe. People also believe that Jack, therefore, has a lot of history with this particular tribe, especially since in a very little frame of movie 1, when he's talking to the guards, he says something like "...and then they made me Chief" Wich would also be why Jack looks so "tribal" in his braids, and rings, and things on his head, when compared to every other character, even most pirates. [ 39:11] The word you're looking for is "lusting".

I read a fun theory about why Jack's soul is worth a hundred souls. Everyone can say Jack is a complex man, yeah ? Well, he does have his own principles in a way. When he talks with Beckett, he says that "lives are not for sale", or something like that. I read somewhere that it's implied that, at some point, he did save a certain number of slaves from a slave trade, and this is why he is worth a hundred souls. That is the number of slaves he saved.
@fightingfaerie
@fightingfaerie 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, he used to work for Beckett in the East Indian Trading Company. But when his cargo was slaves he couldn't do it and freed them. They are the people in the village when they go to visit Tia Dalma, thats why they like him. But because of his actions he was branded a pirate. Theres more, I think when he became a pirate (since he was branded one anyway) he made a deal with Davy Jones to get his ship back, but I don't remember all the details

Ok I didn't go threw ALL the previous comments so it might have been back near the beginning but to answer your question about the compass, it's a magic compass givin to him by Calypso in her human form. It doesn't point north. Nor does it point to the isle of Ila del morta. It points to your Hearts greatest desire, so when Jack desired his ship it took him to it, but in this movie his hearts desire is split. He doesn't know what he wants so the compass isn't working for him. Because he deserves Elizabeth as much as his freedom as much as his ship. So his hearts desire is split

Don't think Davey really had to be scary in terms of looks, his nature makes up for that in abundance. Barbossa, I guess, could be considered scary when he was under the curse, but I never felt that having a terrifying bad was the focus. If anything, Davy's design really gives us a chance to guage his expressions and feelings, as there is enough human in there for him to do more than just grimace like most of his crew does. Makes for a more relatable character, and Davy's life was a tragedy, his theme always gets me tearing up, and I doubt it would've been as effective if he didn't have a discernable face.

Davy Jones is mentioned only once in the first movie. But more as a little lore part, since I highly doubt they knew back then Davy would become an actual character in a series they hadn't planned. People predicted the first movie would be an awfull flop. It had everything against it. - The pirate genre was looked upon as low tier entertainment and not profitable. - The previous ride-based movie (Countrybears) was a disaster in the box office. - The original script lacked the supernatural element. - The movie was first up for a straight-to-DVD entry. Disney pushed it for a theatrical release. - They thought Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow was a ridiculous joke and would not work. Curse of the Black Pearl premiered at I think was in front of the actual ride in Disneyland California on a gigantic sail. What happened next, we all know that 0_0. Disney had NO idea what they had in their hands!

I didn't find Davy Jones scary either but I remember others did (or they found him more like 'gross' I guess). Might be a personal thing like some people get scared and disgusted by spiders, others by snakes, etc.

Depends on what you mean by scary? There are different types of fear. I would say Jones is just intimidating.

The first 3 films are the best. The 5th is acceptable and even good. But the 4th is deplorable, very very bad!!! I hated that movie, it's an insult to the whole saga. PS: I noticed you off, sad in this reaction. And the camera I think was at a very high angle. One tip, if you are going to take notes, pause the video so you don't miss some scenes. I hope you are well and with the joy and mischief of always. Greetings.

the general consensus among fans is that the 5th is the worst, followed by the 4th. So that's just your own personal opinion.. both are worse than the trilogy though...

While you do notes you're missing many good or important parts. Good movie never put something in it if it's not important. Every second must be seen...

Just gonna toss this out here - seem like that Amber Heard was lying her ass off in court... and sadly such false accusations have indeed caused permanent hard to Johnny's career and reputation due to it... yet amber can still get movie roles and advertisement deals..... *sigh*. Anyways, I like the whole deal with the flying dutchman and the fact that the crew is mutated not cuz they are crew of the dutchman, but because they are untrue to the mission, the duty of the dutchman - Ferry the souls of those lost at sea to the afterlife. Davy Jones has broken that oath... so here comes the punishment. It shows, along with the cursed aztec gold of cortez, that magic in this movie series is both dangerous and it comes with a cost... and dire consequences to those that break an accord bound with magic. I very clearcut 'be careful what you wish for, you might just get it' warning for the viewer :p
