I hope y’all understand, when we saw this in 99, it was groundbreaking - the effects and the ideas. This is where all the “simulation” discussions hit pop culture worldwide.

The kiss wasn't what brought Neo back, it was himself. The kiss was a connection to the real world in that moment, a reminder, allowing Neo's mind to fully release his attachment to the reality within the Matrix. That's why he came back, he wasn't REALLY shot and remember that Morpheous says: "The mind makes it real." so Neo, finally understanding this, KNEW that "there is no spoon."

This film was basically the first of it’s kind. What it did for cinema was groundbreaking. Everyone left our theatre just in a bit of an excited, frazzled daze and most people saw it a few times. It was mind bending.

I remember seeing this when it came out and it blew my mind. It wasn’t just genre defining, it completely changed the film industry. You should look into how the director built entire camera stages to create 360 shooting that had never been done before.

28:25 This is one of my favorite moments of word manipulation. The oracle never actually tells Neo that he isn't the one, but it's easy to interpret it that way. And Neo does. Think of the scene this way: "You already know what I'm going to say." "I'm not the one." "Sorry, kid, [you are the one]. But it looks like you're waiting for something." "What?" "Your next life perhaps."

It's always so cool to watch people experience The Matrix for the first time. It was revolutionary when it first came out. The camera work in the fight sequences wasn't really seen mainstream before.

This movie literally changed film, music videos, media, and the effects of the concepts presented are still just as relevant decades later. This is a game changer and the meaning of an iconic movie.

If you liked the young Keanu in this movie, I recommend watching the film Speed. He was also great there.

It's called "bullet time"! Named after this movie because it was the first time it was used, it basically uses a series of timed cameras set in a circle to capture every angle/view at a time so they can get that seemingly everywhere-at-once-in-slow-mo effect. Super groundbreaking at the time. 📽😎🎬 Also, I feel old too now, like many of the commenters. 😅 Fun Facts: "Morpheus" is the Greek god of sleep and dreams; "Nebuchadnezzar" was a king of Babylon in the 500s BC who asked the Hebrew prophet Daniel to interpret one of his dreams (this is the same Daniel of "Daniel in the Lion's Den", mentioned in the Book of Daniel in the Christian Bible). 😴💭

Matrix and Truman Show was late 90s film that had people questioning their reality and whether people seek out the truth or accept the reality they live in. I watched this film for the first time in my high school philosophy class as we were analyzing Plato’s Allergory of the Cave. There’s so many papers on this film or books with similar themes now. Changed both the film and literary industries forever.

The creators of this movie was heavily inspired by the anime and manga Ghost in the Shell, to get more clarification on what happened before the matrix, there’s also something called the Animatrix that gives a lot of lore of the matrix.

This movie came out before you guys were born, that's wild to think about lol. 😅 The Matrix was an absolute monster when it was released not just bc of the effects, but also bc the internet was growing so fast, and the idea/fact that people were actually "connected" was a really new concept. Spoilers also weren't really a thing, so the hype was all word of mouth between friends, family, co-workers, etc. Then for the next two decades plus (EEAAO, right?) films still reference this movie. And sadly, only a month after the movie came out, the first big school pew pew-ing (Colombine) happened. The two wore black trenches, so the Matrix was blamed for that too. The news ate it up like crazy. Anyway, I hope you guys end up enjoying it - maybe not bc it's good, but bc how you can see how often it is refenced even today. That's (imo) the power of movies.

The marketing was also top notch for this film. So little was shown but just enough to get people intrigued, guessing what this movie was all about and what the matrix actually is. They let people’s imaginations run wild which is partly why it was hyped even in 99

Such an iconic movie very surprised none of you have seen it. I remember watching it in highschool film studies class for the first time, 10/10 movie.

My favorite thing about reactions seeing how people really are blue pilled and in the box With their thinking.

The ending optimism of this film is truly pre-9/11. This was the 1990s. No Cold War, and no "War on Terror", invasions of the Middle East, "enhanced interrogation", private military contractors, and all the evil crap that's happened over the last quarter century.

The point Morpheus made about the woman in the red dress was that anybody who isn't "unplugged" is potentially an agent. So yeah, they were just security guards, but at any time, an Agent could infiltrate them. Nobody is safe.

This movie was profound when it came out. Without it you couldn’t have all the comic book movies that came out after it. It moved the consciousness of an entire generation. Mind blowing!

Two of the biggest movies between 1999, and 2004, The Matrix, and The Notebook, both had Canadian male and female leads. In the Matrix it was Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), and in The Notebook it was Ryan Gosling (Noah) and Rachel McAdams (Allie). Just a fun fact. A lot of Canadian actors that people don’t know are Canadian

So very few reactors point out what you did in the Lobby scene. My first thought in 1999 was, "Wait.... aren't those a bunch of humans just doing their job getting straight massacred?" 😂

You guys are in for a treat. Reactions to the film series is always fun and interesting. One of the best films of my generation and its a timeless classic. Its quite complex and has huge lore within. It also tends to ask questions and we tend to question certain things in life. Is this real or not real for example. Plus, it also has great action and epic chase scenes as well that still holds up very well. It also knows when to add the terror when it needs to be. The soundtrack and musical score are also the highlights ever. Really good music back in the day. Makes me a bit proud to be a 90's baby!

YES!! Saw this in the theater with my brother and sister and I was blown away on how awesome it is! It's almost 25 years old! It won Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing. Before Keanu Reeves was cast as Neo, Nic Cage, Johnny Depp, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith were considered for the role. Smith turned down the role to star in WILD WILD WEST, which he still regrets to this day. Before Laurence Fishburne was cast as Morpheus, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Sean Connery and Val Kilmer were considered for the role. Janet Jackson, Sandra Bullock, Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek and Jada Pinkett Smith were considered for the role. Pinkett Smith would later be cast as Niobe in the Sequels. Jean Reno was going to play the role of the villainous Agent Smith, but turned it down as he didn't want to move to Australia for the filming

The hype for this movie back in the day was unreal. They ran trailer after trailer asking what is The Matrix for months before the release.

seeing this for the first time is really a privilege.... that shootout scene, the dodging the bullets, the whole concept of the movie, its such a cool experience to have for the first time

So, with the agents, there is no host body. They are programs than can jump into any human and take it over. They are, essential security software. The reason why everyone who fights them dies is because even if you kill one, it will just take over a nearby body and keep coming. However, remember what Morpheus said about them, they are based on rules and physics. They can be stronger, faster and tougher than a human, but there are limits on what they are allowed to do. SO they can't bend bullets or fly. They miss with guns, because they are aiming at an erratic, moving target. What Neo does to the agent, at the end, was to attack his code itself. Not the body. THAT's why the other agents got scared and ran. And the Oracle was correct about Neo. He was waiting for his next life. Which was after the agent killed him and he got back up.

I think what a lot of people miss, and I missed it the first time I watched it too, is the Oracle told him that he's not the One, but "You have the gift. But it looks like you're waiting for something. Another life maybe" So, yeah he literally had to die to come back as The One.

This is one of my fave films. Some interesting backstory to the creators: The writers/directors were two closeted trans women (The Wachowskis) who were presenting as male at the time. The directors have since said it is an allegory of being trans. The idea of knowing that something is wrong all your life, but not being able to pinpoint it, Agents deadnaming Neo as Mr. Anderson. Estrogen (the female hormone you would take to transition to female) in the 80s and 90s were red pills! Even Switch was supposed to be male in the real world and female in the matrix but producers vetoed it as 'too confusing for audiences'. Even if you don't take this double meaning its a brilliant film but for members of LGBTQ+ it makes it an even more special film.

Fun fact: Oracle never said that Neo is not The One, he said it himself. Moreover, she said that maybe he's waiting for next life predicting what happened. The genius of this script is that almost no one catch this watching the film for the first time because it was plotted into casual conversations as very natural expressions. Next two parts are more challenging in explaining philosophy and history of the Matrix, but have decent amount of "awesomeness factor" (although, not as much as first part).

I love seeing people’s reaction to seeing the matrix for the first time sometimes I can’t believe that sooo many people have not seen this movie it’s sooo iconic and I don’t care what anyone says about the sequel(well reloaded and revolution don’t really care for the fourth movie) the movies r amazing 😎

The og idea for Trinity was that in the 'real' world she was supposed to be a man, and when she entered the matrix she was who she wanted to be and became a woman, but because this came out in 1999 it wouldn't have gone over well, so they didn't do it. But I think it was a good idea and it makes sense for the creators. :)

I remember watching this as a teen with my brother on cinema. It was such an amazing experience. We were so hyped when we came out. The messages and concepts were ground breaking. It's great to see that it's still enjoyable now.

The first movie of almost all series are the best, which makes sense. The film makers sometimes spend years working and refining exactly what they want to do. Whereas sequels are usually done on a much shorter timescale. That said, some of the scenes in Reloaded are my favorite scenes, not just from the Matrix series but from any movie.

Oh shit if you think this one is confusing just wait until Reloaded 😂 This one is definitely the most straight forward, well rounded movie of the series. However, I personally really enjoyed Reloaded and Revolutions. I get why they aren’t as revered as the original but I think they’re super interesting and go to some thought provoking places.

The red pill goes further back at least to "Total Recall" 1990 which you guys should check out next Another strong influence on this movie is the anime "Ghost in The Shell" 1996 "I feel like they could curve bullets" That's a different movie - "Wanted" 2008, which is awesome you should see as well. "Star Trek, probably not" There's a Matrix episode of the original series. "Spectre of The Gun" in which the crew is trapped in a sim of the wild west. Just like this movie, they figure out that if they can convince themselves the bullets aren't real, they can't be killed. "I'm kinda gettin' John Wick vibes" John Wick and this scene were inspired by HK "gun fu" movies invented and pioneered by John Woo. You need to see "Face Off," "Hardboiled" and "The Killer"

I freaking LOVE this movie and so so happy yall watched and liked it! Honestly was super surprised about Rob not seeing it, like if i were dead i'd be rolling in my grave lol that's how taken aback I was. Zuff was catching on and had some good guesses and love seeing how into the action everyone got, but especially Bryce! Trinity is so amazing! Mouse and Switch always make me the saddest. Two of my fav details is the white rabbit line, alluding to Alice in Wonderland (another obsession) and the shot of Morpheus' glasses where you can see Neo in the reflection, one eye has the blue pill and the other the red. I meeaaannn🤌

I love this movie. It has soooo many themes and symbols you can dive into. But here are some basics. Hopefully it provides some high level explanation🥹🫣 1. Humanity created AI (chatgpt?🥲)it eventually became sentient and turned on them (shocking I know). The sentient AI Machines were powered by solar energy. Humans decided to nuke the atmosphere so no more sun, hoping that without a power source the Machines would stop existing. But jokes on humans cause the machines could be fueled by the power the human body naturally outputs (science blah) So Machines start harvesting humans like crops to use as their power source. But making new humans to use for power would take to long the old fashioned hanky panky way so the Machines just start growing humans from scratch. And since the humans are just for fuel they plopped em in some goo and hooked them up to The Matrix. 2.The Matrix is the computer program the Machines created to act as a simulation they could plug their meatsack batteries brains into. 3. Some humans that survived the Machine Human war, are trying to bring down the machines and free humanity at large from the Matrix and the goo. 4. The surviving non meatsack battery humans live underground in a city called Zion, 5. The ship they were on(named after a Babylonian king in the Bible who had prophetic dreams) is not a space ship. They are on earth in the remains of a destroyed city the machines use as part of their human battery factory 6. Agents are sentient computer programs within the matrix that’s it (running out of steam here😅)

The kiss didn't bring Neo back. He did it himself. In the scene with the oracle she had him say he wasn't the one. She never said it. This showed Neo's doubt. The oracle said "it seems like you're waiting for something. Maybe in another life." Meaning Neo had to die to fully accept that he was the one.

Something to keep in mind when watching older movies, kinda obvious but the amazing older movies get copied ALOT and so youve seen a bunch of the movies INFLUENCED by the matrix, and it lessens the impact of watching the original. Like if you had never ever seen bullet time before, its a whole different shock. And this is true for a lot of classic movies. Like The Bourne Identity gets a lot of hate for the shaky cam (i hate shaky cam too) but it was the first to do it like that and it made you feel like you were there. Another example would be the Blair Witch Project, it felt like found footage and that had never been done so you didnt go "oh, thats just another of those found footage movies thats fake". I took a film class and my teacher who was in the film industry said he got an advanced coipy of the blair witch project, literally as a random vhs tape. there were no trailers of it, no info on imdb, NOTHING. that freaked him the fuck out. But thats been done and you cant recreate it with something like cloverfield, because its lost its impact. But if you watched cloverfield first then watched Blair Witch after, you might think CLoverfield was better...

Everything the Oracle said came true: Neo WAS waiting for his next life to become the one. She told Neo that being the one is like being in love, told him that she could see why Trin liked him; even teased him that he was catching up.

It def seemed cheesy first time I saw the kiss, but The reason why the kiss brought Neo back will be explained I think on the next next sequel, the makers call love an anomaly.. The squid Sentinels are the only machines that seek and destroy the surviving humans.. The matrix is one of my all time favourite movies btw.. I remember when it came out, the idea and everything about it was so original and so brand new it just blew my mind.

I love how at the end you started to explain what you understood about how the A.I. control humanity because they destroyed the sun. That is indeed one of the most terrifying storylines of the matrix

I saw this in the theater knowing very little about it except an article I read about what they had to go thru to get a studio to back it. My jaw was on the floor from the first scene to the last. There was nothing else like this back then, and the special effects were like nothing else as well. It also had the best trailer with Morpheus saying "I can't tell you what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself."... a marketers dream. :D

The Matrix Reloaded is the BEST one just cuz of Neo's fight scenes and action!

This movie was the first of this kind on this scale! It was mind-blowing, absolutely amazing special effects for the time dudes!

Keanu in this movie though 👏🏻💕

This movie is more impressive when you realise how it was made. The camera spinning around in slow motion is practical, not digital, computers were only really used for composite and rendering. The actors were surrounded by a rig of still cameras set to take a photo one after another with a movie camera at the end, all green, and then the images were stitched together to make the slo-mo effect called "Bullet time". Also most of the practical stunts as well as the fighting was done by the actors who trained for months before filming. The sequels suffered not only in the story and such, but also because they gave up on most of those practical effects in favour of CGI, and the tech for it was still in its infancy, so a lot of the fight scenes and special effects didn't hold up as well as the first movie. I would recommend watching The Animatrix though, as it explains a lot, and is a very good series of shorts.

Man 1999 was such an interesting time. Cell phones were becoming popular and phone booths were already on the way out, but many still funcioned, with many falling into disrepair. The difference between a "land line" and a cell phone was clear and obvious to the audience. Much more data could be transferred much faster and more reliably over a land line.

When Neo walked in the hallway with the guns, it's not a coincidence that it sounds like "the Terminator". This is all a continuation of the Terminator.

The movie is incredibly deep with Eastern/Western philosophies, and religion. There's tons of hidden clues about the movie, the obvious being the greenish tint throughout the movie that represents being in the Matrix, vs. the gray which represents the real world. Another movie similar to this but came out before is Dark City, but it didn't do the "what is reality" trope as well as the Matrix. Glad you guys watched it. One of my favorite movies of all time.

He "became" fully The One when he died and resurrected. Remember that the Oracle told him "Sorry, kid. You got the gift, but it looks like you're waiting for something. Neo: What? Oracle: Your next life, maybe. Who knows? That's the way these things go."

my first time watching this was back in school when one of my teachers showed us this movie as part of the "does free will exists?" unit that we had to write an essay for (one of those teachers that would plan the themes for the essays especifically to have an excuse to show us iconic movies in class, mvp) and the Oracle scene is still as cool to me now as it was back then. this Oracle is one of the best examples of the prophecies only coming true because she made them: something simple like how Neo wouldn't have broken the vase if her mentioning it hadn't made him turn around, and also something complex like how Neo probably wouldn't have gone back into the matrix if he hadn't felt so responsible for Morpheus dying in vain/for the wrong chosen one. even how Morpheus wouldn't have looked so hard and with so much faith for Neo if the Oracle hadn't prophesied he would find the chosen one. it's really cool to think about cause the Oracle still needs to know the future to a degree to know what things to say to guide things along/what things will cause what reaction but one way or another she doesn't just know the future- the Oracle shapes the future, and i like that bit of worldbuilding

The actors trained for like 2 months straight or more I think to be able to do all of the choreography. and the director of the John Wick movies was Keanu Reeves stunt double. There's The Animatrix that has many stories of the Matrix in-between the first and the second movie, as well as a double parter that reveals how the machines took over. Also even though the second and third movies weren't as loved back then, they still did a lot of more ground breaking use of technology scenes.
