I like the theory that the reason the Great Stone Dragon doesn't wake up is because it already did. Mulan is the great dragon that protects her family. Also, Shan Yu is not surprised that Mulan is a woman because the Huns had female warriors in their army!

The jarring transition from girl worth fighting for to the ravaged village and battleground gives me goosebumps every single time I watch without fail. They completely capture the harsh, raw reality of war and the lives of innocent people it destroys just a second after all of the soilders where singing and joking about having a girl "worth fighting for" to then suddenly see that this is what the fighting is doing, just cinematic genius

The story of Mulan comes from a very old poem. It is debated wether the poem is based on a true story, but it's just to old to really verify. As much as I love this movie, Mulan in the poem is just so much cooler. In the poem she takes the place of her father and younger brother, serves in the military for ten years fighting many many battles and rose to the rank of general. She also was never found out, and only let people know when she retired from her post. There is a live action Mulan from Disney, but the consensus is that it isn't very good. If you want to watch a live action version I would recommend the 2009 Chinese live action rendition. It's a more accurate version of the story, and is much more action packed, and quite a bit more bloody and emotional.

So, aside from everything else that makes the 1998 animated Mulan so great, here are some other tidbits: 1) They actually made Captain Lee Chang Bisexual. Albeit, subtly. He fell for "Ping" back when he understood him to be a man. However, he also fell for "Mulan" (as they were the same person and he liked Ping/Mulan for who they were). That's why Lee Chang is well-known for being a Bisexual icon in the LGBT community. Especially since he was a Bisexual Asian (which is even rarer). 2) The 1998 Animated Mulan is the first-ever Disney animated medium to have cross-dressing and it not be looked down upon as a joke. 3) Mulan is the only Disney Princess with a kill count in the thousands. 4) The reason Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was a woman was because Mongolians were a matriarchal society at the time. Women were traditionally seen as Warriors/Hunters while the men were the Forgers/Gathers. So women held higher authority and power than men. 5) Shan Yu had Juandis.

"You now have a girl worth fighting for" Nah, you guys missed it. During that song, it was cut short when they arrived at the razed village and found the doll of a little girl who had presumably killed by the Huns in their raid. That was their girl worth fighting for.

This movie really is it. It’s so well written and clever. Like in the song Honor to us All. They say that a girl can bring great honor in one way. By striking up a match. Well that’s exactly how Mulan beat the hun army and brought honor to her family. Love things like that! Best Disney movie and great reaction!

My guess is that some of you do not know much about ancient Chinese culture. The film is about their cultural lifestyles of the class systems that affected most Asian countries in the feudal era. Most Asian countries also put "saving face" as a top priority in public, which is why Mulan as a woman could not speak out of turn AND/OR talk back to any woman older than her without expressed permission. As a young woman whom was a "commoner" Mulan was extremely limited by the class system due to not being born into a prestigious family nor as a man. This made it so that there were practically NO good and/or decent jobs she wanted and her only recourse was to get married to a wealthy man or one in a higher social ranking than her own family. Thus the beginning of the film where she was going to the matchmaker to find a husband so Mulan could bring honor to her family house and name. (Part of which was reciting the rites she wrote in Chinese Kanji on her left forearm). In today's world most Asian countries have done away with the main principles of the class system, however in some nations such as communist Chinese states they still hold on to certain aspects of them. Although it has certainly gotten much better in modern times in such countries like Japan, South Korea, etc. Some Asian nations such as China and North Korea still give communism a bad name. In truth, Communism is NOT bad nor is it EVIL. It is ONLY as effective as the leader that employs it. The trouble with communism is that the world has NEVER had a man or woman of the people in place as their respective leader and has only known tyrannical dictators welding the seat of power. If an effective, kind, caring person with a decent heart ran a Communist country their people would all have a place to live, nobody would ever go hungry or without food, everybody would have jobs and the entire nation would pay the exact same tax rate (instead of the USA where the upper 1% can earn countless tax deductions to where they don't have to pay any taxes at all). I used to date and almost got married to a woman from Sichuan, China. I learned to speak a few words & phrases in Mandarin Chinese and a lot about Chinese culture. I firmly believe that your opinions come from culture clash and are ignorant due to non-experience with Chinese culture in general. Half of my immediate family is also Hawaiian & Filipino, so Asian lifestyle norms are ingrained in me due to my upbringing. I have gained a lot more acceptance & understanding of others outside my own nation due to my "Cultural Adaptation" course in college. The class taught students that if you think another country's customs, culture and/or lifestyle practices seem strange or bizarre it is because you are looking at their culture through your own culture's lens and viewing theirs in a one-sided perspective. However, if you are capable of removing your own self perspective from the equation you can learn to accept others for who they are without any prejudice or preconceived notions. It is my hope that this explanation has added some clarity to your meaning both behind Mulan's motivation, the impact of her actions and just how profound it was for her to be accepted by the emperor himself being that Mulan was a woman in feudal era communist China.

For me, one of the most amazing things about this movie, is the fact that they stop the musical portion of the film halfway through. At the end of “a girl worth fighting for”, they come across this absolutely devastating massacre, and after that there is not any song in the movie ever again. It took a very earnest and serious turn and was no longer comedic almost at all.

The reason Shan Yu (the main villain) is green becaause it's Disney's way of indicating that he is truly evil. Same with Maleficents green fire, Dr Facilier's green magic, and Lady Tremaine's green eyes.

love that you guys watched mulan. just some historical facts that make this film interesting - the great wall of china has existed in some shape or form since before the 5th century BCE. the story of Mulan is based on a chinese folk song originating some time between the 4th and 6th century CE. the empire mulan fights so hard for eventually falls to the descendants of the huns, the mongols in the 13th century CE.
