A video showing renovation work to reface in Egypt’s Menkaure pyramid in granite has triggered criticism of the project, with some commentators likening it to 'straightening the Tower of Pisa'.
Subscribe to Guardian News on KZfaq ► bit.ly/guardianwiressub
In a video posted on Facebook on Friday, Mostafa Waziri, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, showed workers setting blocks of granite on the base of the pyramid, which sits beside the sphinx and the larger Khafre and Cheops pyramids at Giza. When originally built, the pyramid was encased in granite, but over time lost part of its covering. The renovation aims to restore the structure’s original style by reconstructing the granite layer.

As long as they're not adding concrete or any other anachronistic building materials, I really don't see the problem. The original casing stone was looted long ago; why is preserving that defacement better than restoring the pyramid to the state it was in prior to its dilapidation? That said, I'm not sure granite was the original casing stone; I thought it had been limestone.

The bottom 1/4 of the Menkaure pyramid was covered in granite at Diodorus Siculus' time. Most of the blocks are still there, strewn around the site. They are proposing digging to expose the bottom courses of granite, and putting the granite blocks that are strewn about the pyramid back in place.

@Johnny-rj9on yes. The great pyramid, as far as we know, was all limestone, the other one had 1-2 courses of granite at the bottom and limestone the rest of the way up, and the Menkaure was 1/4 granite and 3/4 limestone.

No, the new materials will damage and disrespect the old ones! I am Egyptian and I’m completely against this. The blocks they added aren’t even the same color as the pyramid, for f*ck’s sake!! And we can’t call everything “white-washing”, especially because us Egyptians are still in the white race, we are just the Mediterranean type of white, and pushing the narrative of otherwise is very ignorant and racist.

The historical context for that statement was when Egypt was under rule of the Turksz, the Ottoman Empire. People think everything in British museums is stolen but much was legally purchased for lots of money from the owners at the time, who were not ethnically Egyptian, it was the Turkish lords. The Egyptians literally couldn’t protect their heritage because they were conquered about 6 times and were not the rulers of their own lands. Their culture, too, changed. There are multiple ethnicities as well. All legitimately living there. saying it without this understanding is arrogant.
