As a 16 year old referee in Texas, I made a call the coach/parent of the penalized player didn’t like. He came out on the field screaming at me and received a yellow card and was told to return to the sideline. I turned back to restart the game and the man grabbed my shoulders, turned me back toward him yelling not to turn my back on him. I calmly pulled out my red card and when he refused to leave the field of play I called the game. 2 weeks later a hearing was held on his appeal of my calling the came and awarding the game to the other team by forfeit thus costing his team the tournament championship. He was very surprised to find that there was no discussion about my calling the game, just a 20 minute discussion on the proper procedure from having him banned for life from the USSF. That was in 1983, 38 years and over 500 games officiated and 600 games coached and I am retired from active participation in soccer, he lost his job as a high school soccer coach because the national association banned him for life for assaulting a referee during an u12 game. He has appealed his ban 5 times and been denied each time. And yes it was a good call.

@@Spookrider100 it wasn’t about and isn’t about feeling like anything. It was and is about enforcing the rules of the game and keeping over reactive adults from endangering the kids and the officials. The one thing you never do in a sporting event is to put your hands on a referee especially when that referee is a juvenile. I felt bad for the kids on the coaches team for a long time because he caused them to forfeit a championship they were winning and deserved but then realized that was on him not me.

What happened to me was that I was watching my kid's first football match. My friend was a grandad who used to coach kids when he was younger. I started telling some of my kid's teammates where to position themselves in the goal during the game. My friend came over to me and said, not to say anything as you don't know what the coach has said already before the game. I was taken back a bit but listened as he knows his stuff. Then game by game, I watched other parents and saw how bad it looks. I think that some parents just honestly don't realise what they look like.

Your opinion does, be smart talk to them and and be nice. Anyone who has ever played a real sport knows talking trash to the refs doesn't help. When I was being fouled in football, my foot stomped on and held I didnt go yell at the ref and say he is a pos. I asked him to pleases watch I am being held every play. If I got called and I didn't commit it I just walked back arguing and angering the ref only makes things worse. The parents being good sports and polite goes alongway

@@djfearross4144 lol you got side lined for not knowing what your talking about. All teams love the parents to be supportive and say good job. You only instruct your child though unless it's a clear mistake your not the coach. All depends if your playing a city league or for a top state team. example soccer, if on a certain play someone isn't in place the parents will yell and tell them. Youth soccer no one gets mad and looks negative at the parent for correcting what the kid didn't see and the coach couldn't tell across the field.

Two comments - First, referee involved the field marshall to deal with the parent. In a tournament, that is the proper way to manage parents. Second - 2 years ago, when introducing myself to the coach of a U14 Rec team, the coach let me know that, due to an extremely ugly game earlier that season, if any parent was heard by any of the referee crew to say anything disparaging toward either the referee crew or any player, we should identify that parent. If it was one of his parents, that parent's child would sit the rest of the game. Best behave parents of any sideline I can ever recall. Thank you Coach!!!

Many times I fell to my own personality shift during my kids' games. Complete transformation from decent, regular dad to obnoxious loudmouth who thinks he can somehow influence an outcome or intimidate [anyone]. Bizarre! And I was unaware. Then, a game was stopped, and I saw our coach walking across the field towards me. He pulled me aside and said the center heard me threaten him. Not true. But it didn't matter and I was pointed to the parking lot. The game was completely stopped as I gathered my lawn chair and sulked to the car as players, my kids, my friends waited until I was hundreds of yards way. It had to happen and I'm glad it did. After the game, I called coach to see if he could arrange opportunity for me to apologize to the center. He did. I did. I also told the ref it was an important intervention that changed my enjoyment of the game; and for those around me. As a former offender, I'd like to see the parent ejections happen far more often and more swift. Games are much more enjoyable now that I recognize my own alter ego approaching and I curb it.

I coached youth baseball and soccer and umpired baseball. As a coach, I taught the rules of the game and that we needed to support each other and have FUN. All players will play regardless of ANYTHING! The not-so-athletic team members worked as hard or harder than the "stars". They deserve their time. I taught good sportsmanship. Other team, refs, umpires-respect them. As an ump, respect the players and coaches and call the best game I could. I’ve tossed parents and even awarded a forfeit. The parents are driving good refs away from all youth sports. It won’t get better until the parents quit bitching and only open their mouths to provide support to their child’s team. 😎🤘

When my eldest wanted to play soccer at 5 years old, each team had to send 2 parents to referee training and then they refereed other teams games. I learned one thing very early on. There were more Karens at each game than I have ever see before or since. The younger the worse they were. Three boys 6U game collided all going for the ball. One little boy got kicked and his mother threatened me with assault charges. I made no call, they were all going for the ball, but she was not happy. I ended up giving her a string talking to and a promise that if she uttered one more derogatory word, she would get tossed and she could meet her kid after the game in the parking lot. Thankfully, she shut up and my daughter didn’t like soccer she wanted to play softball so I didn’t have to do it again!

@N0sc0p3 default But even if it was a bad call. Is it really that important? Parents that scream penalty are insane. They get angry about their team not getting a worthless penalty but don't care that their kid failed maths. I love football but hate watching kids football. Kids football is about them learning positioning and passing not winning. Anyone can win a kids match. The following is taken and shortened from the U.S. Youth Soccer website, a member of US Soccer, and it reflects everything I've ever been told about how to handle this situation at a youth match. "Remain calm.Do not get into discussions or arguments with the sidelines ...... Enlist the support of the coach. Ask him to speak with the offending spectators, and let him know that if the behavior continues, the game will not. This will usually be enough to quiet most parents, but not all ...... If you have asked the coach to deal with problem parents and the situation continues, ask the coach to have the spectator leave the area. If the spectator refuses, tell the coach that if the spectator is not removed, the game will end. Give the coach a reasonable amount of time (approximately 30 - 60 seconds) to deal with the situation ..."This poor ref is new and should be starting out at a younger age, but experienced refs are getting harder to come by these days.

And I've reffed for longer than that, and it would very much depend on what the parent said. If it's a constant criticism about the handling of the game, then of course, the coach should be the first stop. If it's personal, then he's certainly entitled to address is directly with the parent. We see it from 41 seconds in and don't know for how long this may have been going on. Obviously the coach must have heard it and didn't stop it. Far too often coaches are unable - or unwilling - to stop parents mouthing off. If this is club soccer then the coach is being paid and they sometimes can be reluctant to stand up to their employer, the guy who is partially paying his wages.

Bill Mulholland - which is why referees need a thicker skin. I ignored so much abuse. Btw, I was forced to retire as a result of an MS diagnosis. I would still be out there if I could be.

I was told it was something with regards to questioning the referees integrity to referee the match (essentially accusing him of match fixing).

Barring some extraordinary occurrence, there is nothing that happens within a youth soccer game that means JACK SQUAT. When you're in the middle of a beef at a youth sporting event, you have lost the plot. Shit happens, but who gives a crap about blown calls at this level? No parent has ever protested calls at a youth sporting event and come off looking good.

At some point, the refs need to just ref and do what they're PAID to do. If you can't handle some criticism, better go find another gig

Weird. 1. Call seemed to have been OK - on multiple slow mo reviews, it seems as though the tackle may well have driven the ball into the attacker before heading out of touch. Maybe ... It's a throw-in ... parents who get bent out of shape over throw-ins are the absolute worst. 2. AR stopped play and approached the fan/parent - NOT appropriate. He should have called the CR over and let him choose if/how to deal with the AR's perceived problem. 3. The CR got his AR to head back up the line, and then took the action he deemed appropriate. I have to think that, had the AR not taken exception to a fan's taunts, the CR wouldn't have done a thing. In the youth tournaments I used to work - asking a tournament official to deal with the fan/parent would be one appropriate way of proceeding. IMO it was not called for here, unless some similar things happened earlier in the match (even then, the trigger should be very rarely pulled on this sort of thing). 4. Who the #$*& was that who came walking up the sideline and onto the field of play while the game was still going on. THAT'S the guy who should be removed from the field. What a #$*&tard. 5. My guess is that the CR wasn't too happy with his AR because of this interruption to the game. Both officials have the appearance and bearing of very experienced officials - save for the apparent rabbit ears of the AR. 6. The tournament official handled the matter well, once the CR informed him what action he should take.

If anything throw ins are pretty difficult. It’s hard to see through 2-3 bodies sometimes. I speak from experience. All of my wrong calls from my first ever match (imo) were throw ins.
