Another tip. If you chill down the tank to be filled in the freezer for about 15-30 minutes prior to filling it, you can get more propane into the smaller tank. Reason this works is because the cold will condense whatever propane is in the small tank. This will allow more room in the small tank to be filled. Hope this helps.

You can purge the extra air from within by pushing a small Allen key or tiny screw driver down into the top hole of the smaller tank. That creates more room for even more propane. Do this 2-3x after each refill and you'll get the tank 100% full. No need to use the side valve.

If any of you live near a propane tank company that fills your home for a gas stove or swimming pool. call them and see if they will fill your 20,30 lb. or more tanks. I have a propane company 4 miles from my house and they fill my 20lbs, for about 14.00 a fill. the hardware store i used to go to was charging 29.00 a fill. so give them a try. nothing to lose and money to gain.

What you should do is weigh your tanks before and after. The green tanks hold 450 grams of LP. The green tanks with the metal bottoms should weigh just under 2lbs when finished. I have basically the same adapter and ive had tanks fill to 2.4 lbs which is WAY over max. Its not a problem when they're cold but if they get warm or summer time hot then the releif valve is going to open and fill your garage with explosive gas.

I was taught by tradesmen to not use wrenches on brass fittings. That creaking you heard when he really torked on it; I totally cringed. Brass is softer than steel and it's used to 'bite' itself with only hand tightness. That ' snappy' turn sound at the end was you making a seal and breaking it many times over, fast. It's hard on the threads and will ruin the brass fitting.

First off GO OUTSIDE! Put a wet towel in the fridge and wrap it around the fill tank that keeps it cool the whole time. And turn the whole works upside down. Just be aware that you can overfill them this way in less than 30 seconds. Ive had tanks with an end weight of 2.4lbs and thats WAY over max. But while the tsnk is cold its "fine" until it warms up the the relief valve opens and thats no good for anyone. If you over fill you tank use the blunt end of a small drill bit and press the the valve to release the excess at first liquid propane will squirt out do that until its just gas then youre safe.

Nice video , i think thats a better way to go instead of buying new small propane tanks all the time when you run out. You can some times just reuses with this adapter from the propane tanks you uses for grilling to refill the small ones with. Curious i know old propane grill tanks you can cut thru them if you take out the valve stem and fill them up with a hose. But kind of worried a little about cutting thru smaller hand propane tanks because there is no open place to fill with water so not certain if any vapors are left in once i relief it
@MechanicalChaos
@MechanicalChaos 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, the small tanks have a small valve stem like on a car tire (actually there are 2 on the small tanks) and you can use a valve stem tool to unscrew them and then you could fill with water

I cann't light the hand propane torch so it seems completely out but don't want to cut into it yet until i know all vapors that could ignite are out. Some people drop dry ice in them , some fill with water before you cut into them. But with the smaller hand ones you cann't put water in ...don't have a drill at the moment to make a small hole to fill it with water but regardless. I do like the adapter to fill small handhelds definitely... i am just using an old partially now destroyed handheld tank as a crucible if i can safely cut thru this but have to figure it out first a way to get water in it.

There are a few reasons it won't ever fill up as much as a new full one, one being that when you let some propain in the small bottle, it started to turn back into a gas and prevent more liquid from going into the bottle, I personally don't mind the partly full bottles because of how easy it is to refill them again.
@MechanicalChaos
@MechanicalChaos 4 жыл бұрын
Also make sure to flip the tank and then open the valve on the tank, the bottle will mostly fill with gas and will only let in a small amount of liquid

Transfilling works, but doing it indoors is NOT wise. If you get a leaker you are MUCH safer outdoors. No reason exist to do gas servicing/transfilling indoors which is why I don't, and I transfill oxygen and welding gas (NOT acetylene, you will die) too.

Do this at your own risk! It does work, but its dangerous! There are some factors that he doesn't cover. Like pressure relieve valve position during refill to avoid over filling, a scale to check to "Gas Only" weight, releases of gas in overfilled tank, temperature change expansion, and water getting into the tank causing internal rusting weakening the tank and caution stress point explosions....

Don't just say it's dangerous, but explain exactly how it's dangerous. Overfilling is a non-issue if you weigh your bottles. Explain how "water" can get into a pressurized bottle? And what the hell are "stress point explosions"? You have no idea what you're talking about.

James propane under pressure is in a liquid state . When a valve is opened reducing pressure the liquid changes phases or boils off into a gas. Look at a clear lighter. You will see liquid inside. Even water, which is a liquid at atmospheric pressure will boil off at a low enough pressure.

If you transport that refilled 1 lb tank you could be fined $500,000 and go to jail for five years. There are 1 lb refillable tanks that are DOT approved that will save you from getting in trouble with the law. This is a dangerous way to save money and if you burn your house down, good luck collecting from the insurance company.
