Firstly forgive me! I kept saying "anvil" when I meant to say "hammer" 🤦‍♂️
Anyway! That aside, it's not unusual to find a saw set that has a hammer too broad for small teeth. It's very simple, take it to bits and refine the hammer with a file. Less than 10 min gets you sorted.
Don't sweat if you take off a little too much off the hammer. There's a lot of wriggle room for adjustment.

Much needed video 👍 Absolute winner 🏆 I have a pair of cheesy ones that I’ve done the same to so as not to mess up my Stanley, that one only gets used on my handsaws, panel saw, and large tenon saws.

BTW: I just went and checked the gold painted one I have like the one you modified… they actually paint that handle before it’s put together, so that wear you see is primarily the gold paint over pot metal flaking. Will probably require a bit washer made from sticking some HDPE tape on and trimming one day. The Blue w/red rubber grip sleeved S&J Eclipse 77 saw set is identical except for the finish, so will probably require the same treatment, but the paint on the S&J is baked on better. Like I said, some super thin plastic washers after the paint is scraped away or for my bet, some HDPE in between the grip and body should cure any issues long term and greatly increase the life of the tool. I’ll go ahead and do it to the S&J one and tell you if it’s a winner. I’ll send pics to your email when I get to it later this week. But, I popped into the shop while I was taking the trash out and setting the dehumidifiers on for the night and thought I’d take a look see. 👍

Thank you! I needed to do it, no way was it going to work on small teeth as is

@@TheSMEAC good idea. My only saving grace is I'm not making things in volume at home so the saw pliers should outlast me, even without washers. Thanks for the thoughtful comments!

By the way, I had to do this on my diamond stone because after just a few swipes with my files, I decide it wasn’t worth tearing up a Bahco file doing this. Laying the anvil on its side on the plate registers it perfectly and I raised just enough to get the barrel end up off the stone. ❤️

@@TheSMEAC Yeah, if it's super hard a diamond stone will do the job perfectly. A standard file seemed to sort mine 👌

Did this on my Eclipse with the brass body , but anvil is so hard had to use diamond stone. Trick is you want to keep it even as possible so it is centered. Makes it easier to use.

Thanks Jim. Yes, the hammer seemed pretty soft on this so a file soon did the business. Diamond is a great shout if the hammer is hard. I wouldn't feel comfortable with offering it up to a mechanical grinder, it's a very quick process by hand.

Hey mate, this has nothing to do with a saw set by the way thought I'd ask, I'm a level 2 bench joiner at college. Trying get my head round 345 method with trammels for drawing square for making doors e.t.c. figured as your a fellow joiner you could help. Reckon you could do a quick vid on it maybe? I understand the concept of finding right angles with the 345 method but can never understand actually drawing a square with a trammel bar. Cheers 👌

Good advice. Have you ever tried a vintage saw wrest set? I saw on used by Graham Blackburn on his saw sharpening video and thought it looked intriguing.

Hi! Thanks for that. Could you post a link to them please? Are you referring to the Spear & Jackson? The company where I buy most of my tools suggests this mod too. Cheers

@@jimcarter4929 thanks Jim! From the retailer who sells the Spear and Jackson "For the finest saws (12tpi+) it may be necessary to file small chamfers on the face of the hammer to bring it within the width of a single tooth". Of course we check before doing this, but I had to adapt mine 👍
