Great show and tell Adrian - it is the one I was looking at. I just stole my parents three wedding films, 2x 8mm and 1x super 8 (the small reels) filmed in Monze, Zambia in 1967.I'm now going to have a look at some of the 'found footage' you've posted.

My numbers are a film or film segment counter. Very nice for knowing which order of segment film is so to load them correctly in editing software .

I just looked at the "side by side" comparison of the Pro Lab vs. You. Yours is FAR better. I can't wait to get my machine, it's coming any day now. I saw another video where the guy does a deep-dive forensic analysis of the "expert work" by one of the Big Box sellers of this service, and the results where that legacybox sucked. It was only 480p, only 640x 480, terrible bit-rates, etc. I might have to look into this industry. Who knows, write a little copy, target a few kewords, offer up a "50% off" service and see if anyone bites. If they do and it makes sense then buy a few more machines, LOL.

"I'm just gonna jump straight in, because people want content, and that's what I want to do too." Great, I thought - so many of these type of videos don't do that. But the actual overview etc. didn't start until nearly 5 minutes into a 14 minute clip ... (The first 3 minutes _definitely_ not what the title is about.) As well as bypassing one of the "spools" on the takeup side, you also bypassed the one on the input side. By starting on the leader (I agree, I would too, but:), you didn't show the framing (X and Y, let alone Z) adjustment; as it happens, looks like your framing was well set, probably because you'd already done it. You said you'd put the results (of the scan) on your channel - a link in the description wouldn't go amiss! On the whole, I've seen a lot worse, but you did ask if there was anything you can do better - comment intended positively!

I have also bought one of these and think it's OK for the money. I am digitising my dad's old films which were shot during the 60s and 70s on a Kodak "Brownie" standard 8 camera. In the early 90s my mum had some of the films transferred to VHS, and I have to say the Reflecta gives far better results than that. I think it's bizarre that the output mp4 is at 30 frames per second. Surely it would have been possible for the software to output at 16 fps for standard 8 and 18 fps for Super 8? It has been said that it's possible to change the frame rate in most editing software - well I haven't found out how to do it in Kdenlive yet. I use mp4box which demuxes and remuxes mp4s, allowing you to set the farme rate when you remux. It's a faff, but it's simple and it works.
@ReelFilm2016
@ReelFilm2016 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I know what you mean regarding the frame rate. When I first started to use the reflecta, I naturally assumed that the system would automatically recognise and adjust but it didn’t. Some of my earlier videos in my playlist are still sped up. But as I learnt on the job, I realised I could implant speed variations using Final Cut Pro. And then, a little bit later on, I learnt how to colour correct / adjust the exposure and my mind was blown. Amazingly, I sent a reel of 8mm film away to be processed and when they returned it to me with the mp4 video, I found that there were areas which could still be improved. So I re-scanned the film on my reflecta and I managed to get better results (well as good as) and found I improved over their footage.

Hi. Great work. Thinking of buying reflecta scanner as finding my return to super 8 to be frighteningly expensive considering the last super 8 films I bought were £15 including processing from Dixons. Have looked at the lab you use and it was coming in at £140 for one film, processing and scanning. Do you have any comparison videos for using that lab and the reflecta for the same video so I can see the difference? You allude to one in this video. Cheers and keep up the good work. James

I have one of these and overall I'm quite pleased with it. I believe it needs two changes to take it from being an adequate machine to a rather good one - firstly, to reduce the compression in the finished file and secondly it could really do with black level clamping as it copes rather poorly with night time scenes - the light output seems consistent regardless of the picture content. As I collect old films of Blackpool Illuminations I've found a lot of post correction is necessary and even then the results aren't ideal. For home movies shot under average daylight conditions it's perfectly good though.

Hello Sir, thanks for your message. Sorry to hear you are experiencing some issues. When you say that your film is hanging, are you referring to the left or right side of the scanner or both? Secondly, when you refer to the film not being pulled forward, do I assume that you have loaded it correctly and shut the little gate above the light box? Thank you for this helpful introduction and demonstration. I recently purchased a Reflecta scanner and began digitalizing my 8/super8 archive. In the beginning all went well and I was able to succesfully transfer a dozen of clips. For the price, the picture quality of the device is indeed very reasonable. But later vertical stripes started appearing on the display and the images froze. At the same moment, the enter button also stopped giving response. Checking the SD card afterwards, nothing was recorded. The scanning however continued as normal. The device keeps giving the same error every time I try again. I’m afraid the quality from these units are not brilliant, full of mp4 artefacts. Why are the guides fixed and not revolving with the film? Other people have said that the take up motor pulls too hard and causes jitter. The plastic gate design is not good either. See this website for a major modification to improve the results. Thanks for watching and commenting. I am interested in your comments and would like to respond to them. For me, the quality is important and in my opinion it’s reasonable. Personally I think the Reflecta is over priced for what it is but the options are limited in this market. I am guessing that the guides are fixed to ensure the image is captured and scanned. I don’t know if other models have improved in this regards but again, for my own purposes, it does a job that I am happy with. I think that I might have experienced the jitter you are talking about but it doesn’t seem to cause me any noticeable problems. Actually, on this very point, a friend of mine and a fellow KZfaq called Codbotherer, purchased and used one of these machines. His Family used to shoot a lot of 8mm film and recommended loosening the film on the spool before using. They rigged up a little contraption which is in the video. Link below. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zqp7lLJ029ymqpc.html I also quite like the plastic gate design because it enables the film to remain fixed which in turn allows you to zoom in and out of frame. Lastly, I scanned a film I shot on this scanner and compared it to the professional scan. You can identify the better quality one but I don’t think it’s dramatically different. The link below is the one I scanned. If you read the further info in this vid, you will find info on the professionally scanned one. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pp92Zc-qt6yYnZs.html

@@ReelFilm2016 Yes, the plug issue needs to be improved by the manufacturer, it's not good customer service. I've digitised eight films now, and am very happy with the results. I'll have to add some duplicate frames to slow the film down just a wee bit, as the FPS is not quite right. And I've got the hang of the film gate now - it's not really any more finicky than the gate on a cine projector. @@ReelFilm2016 Thanks for checking that. Yes, is what I thought. The reason I asked is because when I do Super 8 films, it doesn't scan in the same smooth manner as when I do Standard 8 films. At times it is smooth, but at other times it races way ahead and seems to be doing lots of frames each second before slowing down again. The scanning time of a reel the same size as a Standard 8 reel is also much quicker. So I've been thinking it's maybe am option in the menu I've been missing. Good morning. Thank you for sharing your video. My 80 year old mother took some of my dads many old 8mm and Super 8 reels to a guy for him to digitalise them. She paid 20 K for about 2,5 hours and the result is beyond poor. The worst part being that they are completely out of focus. I tried to save them in Final Cut Pro, but with little or no luck. Does the Reflecta film scanner have a feature that automatically focus the output or is this a tedious jobb? When I read the different comments here I am not quite sure if I should purchase the Reflecta, but I have so much footage with quite a lot of affection value for my family that I want to preserve. Prices for this kind of work here in Norway are really expensive so I might as well consider buying equipment to do it myself. All the best from Norway.

Hello Sir, thanks for watching and reaching out. 20K? How much is that in pounds? 😥 So, a little while ago, a friend of mine asked me to support him with a job similar to yours. I used the reflecta scanner to scan a few reels and it became apparent to me quite early on that some of the film was out of focus. At first, I wondered if it was the scanner itself, but as the film continues, suddenly it was focused. It was clear that whoever was shooting that film hadn’t refocused the camera. The scanner has no option of automatically focusing an image. What I would suggest (if you can be bothered), is to buy an old projector capable of running both formats of film, something like a eumig and project them. This way you can view the footage as it was meant to be viewed and you will know what is in focus and not. The friend I helped out actually liked the results I got for him even though there were parts of the film which were out of focus. To him, just being able to see old family members was great. My friend ended up buying a reflecta, scanning all of his footage and then sold it afterward. One last thing, I use FCP myself and it’s fantastic at colour correcting / lightening some of the old footage. There’s a lot you can do with the scanner and FCP but refocusing isn’t one of them, I haven’t had a problem with the scanner since I have had it. If you want to see more of the reels I have scanned, I have a dedicated playlist on my channel, to give you a better idea. Let me know your thoughts.

@@ReelFilm2016 Thank you very much for your elaborate and quick answer. 20 K was in Norwegian kroner. Sorry :-) That is about 2000 pounds. A Reflecta is priced between 450 and 600 pounds here in Norway from shops. I will check for used and maybe also borrow a projector. My father was definitely not a pro, but I remember the movies better focused than the results I received. Not quite sure how they were digitalized since I had no hand in the process. The guy also lost the originals... I tried the sharpen function in FCP and it might help here and there, but my experience is that you have to be careful with it.I am waiting for the new 16'' MacBook with M1 chip so I can update FCP to the latest version. Thank you again. It seems like the Reflecta might be worth a try. When the shops open again I will check it out ;-) All the best.

Hi. I also have this scanner and we returned it as it was 'faulty'. We have just received our replacement but it is doing the same 'fault'. When I play back the films, it shows them jittering, but it is different levels of jitteriness every time. It isn't a problem with the films as we have been watching them on the small screen and through a projector. I was just wondering if you had ran into this same jittering problem and if so, how have you fixed it? Thank you
@ReelFilm2016
@ReelFilm2016 4 жыл бұрын
Jasmine Shaw Hello there, thanks for your comment. I did encounter some jitteriness from time to time and I put this down to the age of the film, the scanner and the film speed. When some of these reels were shot, certain cameras shot in particular frames per second. Some films look really fast a and jumpy because of this. Sometimes, if you have the the ability to edit the film and change the film speed it can look more stable. In the film I scanned for this video, the clouds kept flashing in certain frames. Once I amended the brightness and the and quality of the scan, things looked much better. Sometimes it’s worth playing around with he scanner a bit. Hope that makes sense and helps you out

At least I know the film itself is fine, it is just scanning it. The same film can one day be jittery and then not be at all, so I am sure it is something with the scanner. When I first got the scanner, they were all perfect, but then the jittering started!

Hello there, thanks for watching and commenting. All of the movies which are in my playlist were uploaded by myself using the reflecta scanner. For what you are paying for this scanner, I think the quality of the footage is decent. Especially when you consider that professional scanners cost thousands of pounds. Take a look at this video which I uploaded. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pp92Zc-qt6yYnZs.html The film was my first time shooting super 8. Upon completion I sent it of to be processed and digitised. The professionally scanned video is on my channel but to make things easier for comparison purposes, I digitised the film on my reflecta scanner which is the one contained in the above link. @@ReelFilm2016 I watched both, I do not know if you did much post processing on the Reflecta. The Reflecta scan shows true black and white and good contrast. Switching to full screen player, you notice digital artifacts on the Reflecta scan, some scenes seem more affected than others. But in Theatre mode the Reflecta wins for overall image impression more lively and fresh. Any comments yet on the Fomapan R100 Double8?

Resorob Oh wow, they are some nice cameras. It’s my first time shooting double 8 so it will be interesting to see the results. I shot the first side on the Kodak Turret camera. Mechanically, the camera is sound, but it seemed to struggle once I closed the camera door and pressed the shutter. The film was passing through correctly but it was struggling. Kept stopping and starting. That’s why I got another camera. The other Kodak seems more reliable. But as long as you have loaded the film correctly, pressed the shutter and observed the film running smoothly, you will be fine. It’s all a learning experience and fun at the same time. Just out of curiosity, what part of the world are you from?

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. Ha ha, no there is no specific reason, I was probably being lazy but didn’t want to encourage others to do the same Incase they damaged a film. Since this video, I thread the film in the way it advises you to. Either way, it has never caused me a problem. In regards to it jumping out of frame, this is fairly common, at least for me. Just adjust your framing before the recording process. Once you do that, it rarely moves out of frame for me. Another thing to bear in mind is 1) make sure you know the difference between 8mm and Super 8, ensuring it is switched to the correct format and 2) even if it does jump around a little, you can always amend the the crop in post production. Hope that is of some use to you 😀

@@andrewbradley4020 I currently edit with Final Cut Pro. Nothing too fancy. You can do a lot of the same in iMovie. When it comes to the speed, I only slow or speed it up if I think it will dramatically improve the overall product. I quite like the sped up effect of old film and quite often leave them as is. That’s a personal preference though. If I do adjust speed, it is usually to slow it down so not to miss an Important item or subject in the film. I had no experience before getting the scanner.
