My father immigrated to the U.S. From Italy when he was 16. He shared all his favorite music with me, Domenico Modugno and Claudio villa (Luna rosa) were two of his favorite. I can hardly keep a dry eye when I think about his last days with lung cancer. He would whistle this song even with lung cancer and copd, as the sickness progressed his whistle was reduced to a barely audible whisper. I would hide myself in another room to cry. Thank you Daddy! my mother was agonizing, barely conscious, when a friend of her came to visit her and started singing volare. my mom woke up for a while and smiled, made an effort to sing, which she couldnt of course, and all the family joined singing. these were the sweetest, saddest and at the same time, the happiest moments we had with her. she died exaclty 2 years ago. everytime i hear this song my face is covered by tears and a smile, and my heart is full of love and gratitude.

@museack It's about being a nation. Hard to understand if you are from some place that is just a country and not a nation. Doesn't matter where you were born, if you are Italian YOU ARE ITALIAN. While in those countries without identity, mainly in the Americas, they just have a country, but not a group of people that understand each other and make up a nation, race and culture with an identity. We all have to do with it, it's our race. Now, if you talk about the Italian State, country, etc. That doesn't really matter. Same you could say about the Jews for example.

Yes you're right. Music it's maybe the greatest veichle for communication of our hearts Then it's obv your choice what to communicate: separation, like most of the music today (at least in my country but it's a global degeneration I guess), or on the other hand, oneness I always loved India, one day I hope to visit you from Kerala to Ladakh p.s. suggestions for some beautiful indian music are well appreciated, especially traditional (with old instruments like Sitar, Tanpura ecc). It came 2nd songs of all time at the "Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest" show in the 2005! Right after Waterloo, which won in 1974, the same edition which the Italian singer Gigliola Cinquetti came 2nd. You know what? In the Italian wikipedia page of this song there's not even mention to the Eurovision facts, neither that it's the most covered ESC song.

Italian is the most beautiful language for me to hear. The way the words are pronounced, the way they use their gesture to accentuate the meaning. I am always in awe when I hear my friend from Milan(Lombrata) have conversations with his mother. Just an incredible language that has many dialects but has been preserved for so long.

Fun fact, he is THEE reason Italian music became so popular. Up until that point in Italy, it was very conservative and the singers would be very still. He was the first to open up his arms and incorporate movement into his singing to capture more emotion.

Jerry, that is a wonderful story. Thank you for posting it. I had an Italian grandmother as well, but I don't really remember her. What we have is the Sicilian cooking, and the music. My mom and I both play accordion, or she did when she was in full health. I'm learning this song for her now to help bring back her memory of her time as a young child in her Sicilian grandmother's house. All my best to you. I hope you find a child to sing this to, to carry on the tradition.

This song is so beautiful and not nearly as appreciated as much as it should be. I know the first verse and chorus from memory. When I looked up the translation I felt like I already understood exactly what the song was about. I learned some italian since then: Mio nonno era italiano ma abito in Suecia. I was happily in a relationship with a wonderful Italian man, a pretty little younger gal who came from big bucks came to work where we both worked and altho it took her a year, she did steal him away...altho he came to me several times to say he would marry me as he loved me..we did see each other several times ...but in the end I lost all trust...so I gave him my blessing and moved on and they are still married to this day.

Pero me siento contento, de conocer la bella Italia, su gente amable, su idioma, su comida y también beber sus buenos vinos. Agradezco siempre y en cada iglesia que paso y en cada ciudad, A DIOS y a la santisima Virgen Maria, de conocer Italia, desde el norte, Milán, Como, el centro de Italia, hasta Capri, Napoles y la costa Amalfitana y su impactante Pompeya y Lecce. He was wonderful and so is this song. I know all the words in Italian & English for years. The verse and this middle part i need to learn. At least the verse. I was a professional singer for years. RIP Domenico.

My Nonno and I used to always sing this together and he recently just passed. This remind me so much of him and this was one of his favourite songs
