I grew up across the street from the Nike site at the Westlake/Fairview Park border. Still remember the day they closed it and us neighborhood kids sat in my front yard and watched as the endless stream of army trucks pulled out one by one. Later we used to go down and explore the silos where the missiles were stored and to be launched from. It's now Tri City Park and those silos we used to go down into are now covered with tennis courts. I remember how the base was surrounded by fences that had barbed wire on them. I think there's still some remnants of the fence in areas around the park. That might be the only sign left of an era long past.

I was station at the Cleveland oh nike sites. The Deployment of the Nike Hercules began in 1958 replacing the Nike Ajax. A large number of Nike Hercules carried the W31 nuclear warhead. The sites in Cleveland shut down in 1971. I arrived in Cleveland in 1962 an at that time their was only three sites in Fairview Park ,Bratenahl , and Painsville ,plus Cleveland Army Air Defence Command at Warrensville Oh.

Thanks for the info. My dad was stationed there in the 50s. My sister was actually born while he was stationed there. I used to love the stories he would tell about being there.
