Completing the first family of patterns, we've now looked at all three of the "reflecting reds": *442, *2222, and **. These have mirror image symmetry but no rotational symmetry.

I know this series is titled minecraft floors, but I would love to see you talk about symmetry options available on other surfaces that can be made or approximated in minecraft, like the diagonal stairstep or minecraft sphere approximations.

next episode will probably mention a couple diagonal patterns. There might also be some videos on 3D patterns eventually

As soon as this series is over I want to do a whole host of patterns by category, it's really opening up ideas!

In 1.12 we can mess around with end gateways (and the end portal frames you showed) in survival thanks to falling block, and you can somewhat maintain the ability to use them after updating, but reinforced deepslate can't be gotten because it's on a different version of the game. We will have to find a future bug to get those.

Great explanation! Looking forward to seeing how rotational symmetry plays into this

Neat! I remember browsing through Conways book on symmetries in a library one week, and a lot of this is reminding me of that. Always an interesting topic, but I must admit I always struggled to remember it cuz I never put it into practise. I don't actually play a ton of minecraft myself atm, but it's cool to see it

It reminds you of that because - if you watched the first video in the series - he pulls out that specific Conway book and says it's where he's getting this information from :P

there is a data pack on vanilla tweaks that adds a terracotta rotation wrench if you think that would help in making these videos

I barely understand this, but black glazed terracotta is one of my favorite blocks because my favorite colors are black and red

what shaders do you use in the videos? btw, a great idea to implement all these patterns in minecraft!

The biggest problem with these patterns is that they're all even numbered. Odd numbers look better in minecraft

I'm enjoying this series, but if I ever need to find north, I'm not fart assing around looking at the floor or the Sun. I'm pressing F3.

When I first clicked on one of these, I'm not sure why I did. Then I watched for 5 minutes, thinking tp myself, this is boring as heck. I haven't really found a way to justify an alternative view, but here I am watching the series of them 🤣

You can find North using the pattern on blocks as you break them

Do these names have anything to do with coxeter-dynkin diagrams? They also encode symmetries, like for example o4o4o encodes *442 symmetry

From what I can tell, they're just different naming systems for the same mathematical objects. But each describes the object with slightly different phrasing/emphasis
