You never cease to amaze me with all these simple, incredibly handy, devices. Your videos have always excited me for the outdoors. Unfortunately my back don't allow me as much time in the wilds as I'd like. I live my mountain man life through you Dave. Merry Christmas Dave and God bless you and your family. Here's to 2016... Let God smile on us this year!

back in about 1962, my Scout Troop decided to go extra light weight. One of the lightweight things we chose to build was a reflector oven. It was completely folding, with no extra lose parts. we made the ovens out of sheet aluminum. We joined them with coat hanger wire, which formed the pins for hinges that we built into the sides when we cut the aluminum. The hinges were square interlocking tabs, Bent to the size of the wire. There were some sliding pins to fasten it together, but nothing to get lost. it weighed less than 8 oz. Another cool, non folding oven is made by cutting a large can, square is best, but round works, find legs and a shelf in the middle. A rack works better than a sheet for the shelf.

That is a great idea. Inexpensive, and fast to build for anyone with even basic building skills. A drill and drill bit are the only two things you need. I have a new friend that I am starting to teach how to build things. This might be a good project for her.

Bravo! As they say,"Necessity is the mother of invention".Thanks so much for sharing this idea,Dave.A month back I stood in the aisle in Lowes where all the sheet metal was,brainstorming on how I could make a reflector oven.I thought,Oh boy,this would be over my head cost wise for the materials.Yep,I too would leave the oven at my base camp.

You could remove the middle pan and drill a hole each side so that you could slide a metal rod through it for a rotisserie to do whole chicken, or turkey and put the middle pan at the bottom to catch the juice of the poultry . Just an ideal? Like to see this working, Happy Thanks Giving

+eightgeorge or refer to Dave's video "Bushcraft Kitchen Part 3 A Simple Rotisserie" and use forked sticks in about a 1/2" hole, or if you go with a metal rod I'd suggest getting a set of Light My Fire Grandpas FireForks to prevent rotation of whatever you are cooking. I have a pair of those fireforks in my cook pot and they work great. www.amazon.com/Light-Fire-Accessory-Black-Orange/dp/B00HQLNN00/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1448497117&sr=8-10&keywords=light+my+fire

lol, I was going to comment that aluminum might be better because it conducts heat WAY better, even though some people are scared of it.
@user-ki3dj9pu9y
@user-ki3dj9pu9y 8 жыл бұрын
+Taste Sking Well, as a professional Chef, I can tell you that heat is, in fact, important. Heat is what cooks your food. However, it goes beyond that, because poor conductors of heat, like stainless, take a LONG time to heat up, and also disperse heat in an uneven way. this could cause you to have to cook longer and end up using more fuel. Now, this may not seem like a big deal, until you have food that takes forever to cook, and is overdone in one section of your pan and not cooked in another. Also, you have to consider the amount of fuel used to cook the food. More fuel means more time gathering fuel, or paying for fuel, in my case. This is why most restaurants do not use stainless cookware, unless the stainless cookware has either a copper or aluminum core. This is also why most stainless only cookware is very thin, because there is less mass to heat, and then you end up burning things lol. The final point I will make, is that given the uneven heating of stainless steel cookware, it actually cools down faster than aluminum, carbon steel, cast iron ect. This is because the heat doesn't conduct well, so you end up with only parts of the cookware being hot, and only where the heat is applied, rather than having it transferred throughout the entire pot, pan, ect. So, hopefully, you can see my point here. That being said, hey if you want to go stainless, more power to ya. My point was only on efficiency, nothing else.
@linusyootasteisking
@linusyootasteisking 8 жыл бұрын
Matthew Thomas of course you are correct, but as you said your point was on efficiency, i wrote if you dont care about time it doesnt matter. it depends on what you plan to do with it of course as well.but i think its very exaggerated to suggest that a stainless steel pan will cook one part of, lets say, a steak to well done and another part bloody. even if you can just move around your food. however, lets stop talking about this, i accept your points and reasoning. good day.
@Atkrdu
@Atkrdu 8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Thomas What do you mean? Like it's sandwiched between steel layers? Hey- from a cooking stand point, what would you think of a titanium pot with a stainless steel (or copper, or aluminum) bottom? I was figuring it could be a way to get around the issue that titanium has where it heats up really quickly right where the heat makes contact with the metal & then thing burn. Maybe titanium all around & then a layer of different metal under it?

I wonder if that could work to make a solar oven too. Maybe the center tray could be removed and the whole rack placed on it's side inside a plastic cooler that has a piece of glass to cover it and hold in the heat. A dark colored cooking pot could be placed in the center of that upward facing V where the center tray used to be and the whole thing left in the sun to slow cook the food in the pot.

This is a great idea!! Thanks for sharing it! I have a question Dave. I understand that the back of the reflectors and cook pan are set up to be nested somewhat in the back, but looking at the reflector pans I am wondering if the top reflector would reflect more efficiently if it were turned upside down so that the sides of the pan captured and reflected more heat plus allow a little more baking room. Your thoughts?
@FlashGeiger
@FlashGeiger 8 жыл бұрын
That looks great and likely lots cheaper than mine. I have one I purchased. A couple points on use... you need a flame fire, don't wait for coals. Just make a fire with small sticks in front of it and start baking right away. Also, it's much hotter than I thought and my first batch of muffins was scorched on the outside and raw on the inside. You may not need a fire as big as you think you need. i certainly didn't. Mine just has rods across the inside to put the baking pan on, so that may have aided in heat getting to the food.
