Should you refund the deposit you were paid when you took the booking if the client cancels?

Great video JP. Totally agree with you. I find Cancellations are rare since introducing terms and conditions & a booking contract.

Option 4 for me, having said that the few who have cancelled have never asked for the deposit back anyway, love your opinion on the 'other ' Dj. top vid as always.

Hot topic JP, great advice, I don’t generally refund deposit if the client cancels unless it’s Covid related, I think it’s a sticky subject however they should have no problem re scheduling the date. Keep em coming

It's a tricky subject, especially in these unprecedented times, and you have covered it well in this video JP. Working with the client to move the event to a mutually acceptable date will always be the best option to keep both parties from feeling hard done to. If, however, the client goes for a complete cancellation, as opposed a postponement, demanding full payment may well end up in a time consuming small claims process and could easily result in bad publicity for the DJ, irrespective of the DJ's contractual rights. On the flip side, if a DJ has to cancel, for example due to illness, there is no question that they should immediately refund the deposit but should they also be prepared to pay for any losses the client incurs, for example by having to pay a higher fee for alternative entertainment?

Interesting feedback, not sure I’m with you on picking up clients out of pocket expenses if you have to cancel! But harsh if you have had a positive PCR! Also i can’t see anyone actually going down the small claims route as a contract is in place! 😎👍🏻

Doing option 4 shows that you have offered an amicable solution before the dispute ends up in the small claims. At the end of the day contracts aren't worth toilet paper sometimes because a judge acting in a fiduciary capacity can nullify the contract and still side with the client if they think the service provider has been unreasonable given the circumstances for the cancelation.

Can’t see a deposit amount ending up in small claims, personally I would contest and self represent! Would not be the first time and I’ve won every case before 😎👍🏻 Also don’t agree that the contract would be ripped up, and that is based on my own personal experience. If you were talking the full payment then maybe 😎👍🏻

Really interested in this hot topic. I've read on some forums djs wording the deposit as a 'booking fee' for doing the pre gig work you mentioned. One argument I've read for returning deposits is to avoid negative word of mouth which may affect future bookings. From your vid I assume you haven't found that to be the case?

I don’t personally see net returning deposits is an issue with negative word of mouth, that is not something I would be concerned with! I would say to anyone who is negative towards me due to that I did not return a booking fee is that they are ‘banned from life from me accepting any gigs from them’ 😎👍🏻
