Refurbishing IBM Thinkpad R60 and installing Games on it

I just got myself 2 R60 with broken LCDs for around 40 dollars. They came with Radeon X1400, 2GB of RAM and T2400. I was able to load up Serious Sam 2 and it run really well at Max setting. They are really great for Windows XP gaming and I plan to order a SSD and T7200 for upgrade. Since they both have problems with the displays I plan to detach them and use them as PC Commodore 64 style.

Ah, well that is something! This R60 isnt as hardcore as the one you are describing though! As you can see it barely manages to run 3D games, because of the onboard chip. I found two other retro laptops at my garbage disposal yard this week, i dont even know the specs, but they were free. Im going to do a refurbishing video on those as well. But that C64 style is a great choice, haha!

For the record, the R60 can take 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 2x2GB. And slotting in a 64bit processor is easy-peasy, the T7200 can be had for pennies in 2018.

Thank you gor for the information, im going to look into that CPU replacement. Does it benefit from it a lot with that newer CPU though?

@@fistbumpbros A benefit is a 62% increase in speed (T2300=729 cpu benchmark, T7200=1166), but the main one for Linux users is the 64bit support of the T7200, Windows users won't care much as 32bit support is still good in Windows. The bios will report 4GB ram but the OS will only see 3GB with either processor because of the PCI bridge plumbing. The R60 is a paving slab of a unit, but a touch-typist can use it all day long without fatigue, and I'm a fan of the 4:3 screens.

it was an good idea to install windows xp on it. The last thinkpad with windows 98 support was the t42 series.

@@debabratasaha4096 the R60 isn't really a machine to play early 3D games with. Maybe on the lowest resolution like 640x480, but its troublesome.

ZozzledForks haha what a comment! I laughed hard. Nah I've been doing refurbs and repairs since I was a little boy (always opening machines to see what's inside) and with the custom consoles I did, I had to open up gaming consoles all the time. You get used to it.

cracked open my r60, got to the point where it said 2gb max ram. close my r60

There are other ThinkPads that can hold more. The R60 is limited in that point.
