📥 Download the PGN of this opening from this blog-post - bit.ly/3CMAe9H
In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will show you how to refute the King's Gambit as Black. The King's Gambit is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1.e4 e5 2.f4. White's idea behind giving away the pawn is to gain rapid development, dominate the center, castle kingside, and attack on the semi-open f-file.
The Falkbeer Countergambit is a great choice to counter the King's Gambit. It happens after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5. Black offers a pawn back instead of accepting White's gambit with 2...exf4. White's move 3.fxe5 is a terrible blunder as Black can play 3...Qh4+ - even the world champion Magnus Carlsen made this blunder.
After the standard capture, 3.exd5, GM Igor Smirnov recommends you to play the rock-solid 3...exf4 as it completely shuts down all the White's ideas. The Abbazia Defense allows you (Black) to develop your pieces easily, castle quickly, and dominate the center and kingside, instead of White doing that.

Winning move for the puzzle, Nxd5. If he captures your knight with the queen, then he loses it, because then you play Bb4+, which also unleashes a discovered attack against his queen. No matter how he defends, you can take his queen with your queen

yep, or if youre playing a higher level opponent that realizes its a queen trap and doesnt take back, you could capture pawn with Nxd5 then if the opponent doent move his bishop you can then check the king with your queen by going queen to Qxa4, also winning the bishop. (depending how they develop)

Excellent video. It is also good for Kings gambit players like myself to understand more theory for my side. I would probably take pawn on D5 with the knight because the knight is protected by a discovered check with bishop B4. (A recurring theme even for the attacking side in the Kings gambit)

a few weeks ago i faced the king's gambit for the 1st time on club level. I played the falkland countergambit. Made 1 mistake in the midgame that made me loose the match.

One thing I would like to see is how for white to follow through and win with the chosen opening. So many videos deal with how to combat an opening and win, but so few actually follow through. For example, I am looking for the way way to use the falkbeer variation of the kings gambit and while I see lots of ideas in this video, they all involve black taking advantage of all of white's possible moves.

Because white loses a tempo on development as black would play Nf6 for example. Remember black doesn't have to play Qh4+. I wouldn't be surprised if an engine has white losing (maybe -1 or so) after Qf3. I'm not positive, it's just a gut feeling cus by doing so white gives a slight development advantage over to black.

I've only faced it 5 times and played 5 different moves winning 3 out of the 5, but I bet the 2 moves that weren't main line I won with confused my opponents. I've been studying it, and it is BRUTAL with a bunch of mates under 15, and in one line, a choice of FOUR different mates. no matter WHAT line you play in the falkbeer, it's a bit of a surprise. I've only faced it about 70 times out of 1,110 games. I play King's Gambit, and win with it, but your Double Danish Gambit video makes me want to try THAT after dismissing it years ago.
