Dearest Friends,
This is the third and last instalment of the Rega P3 turntable launch videos. I thank all of you for your care and well wishes for my up and coming Japan trip at the end of this month. Thank you Friends!!!
After this P3 vs RP3 video, I will be preparing the Group B cartridge reviews for the Grado Green, Goldring Elektra, and the Nagaoka MP-110, round it up and make my very best final conclusion for their performance. All three pf them are brilliant in their own right :-D !!!
Love you friends!
Best Regards always,
Ian.

I have a P3 and Nagaoka MP-150 on the way- should have them both next week. I'm upgrading from a P1 with an MP-110 and some Tangospinner upgrades that I'm migrating over to the new deck. Can't wait!

Thanks for taking the time to do this detailed comparison. It's good to know that Rega's changes have been worthwhile. I'll be waiting for the P6 to come out. Dear Isaac :-D, thank you!!! Yes do go by the differences as I verbally described. I have painstakingly A-B tested the P3 vs the RP3 back to back, to and fro.... however as I would like to inform kindly all my kind friends like you who believe and trust my reviews, the video included is for illustration purposes only...and not for viewers to judge the sound quality. Reason no.1) :-) : - I never believe in digitised files to gauge analogue equipment, 2) KZfaq's sound quality is not a high resolution digital format too. That is why, the videos included of the system playing the various records, are for illustration purposes only, and to build on the visual and infotainment value of the equipment reviews :-). The most important parts are what I stated verbally, and in written words, about the equipment. Thank you Isaac for coming by and catching up, and for your kind words and encouragement. Best Regards to you and may you have a joyful vinyl playing journey ahead with family and friends! - ian.

My white P3 is identical to the one in the review, except the cartridge of course, mine is an OM2. The way to enjoy this hobby without going broke is to find the sweet spot between the economy lines and the high end stuff. The P3 is it. The tone arm s a work of art, everything I have bought made in England has been really good sounding, they seem to have the knack for making musical equipment.

I appreciate all the effort that went into this, and at first I thought different cartridges had been used, but then I noticed that the camera was moved a little bit, which can actually change the sound quite a lot. Proper recordings through a soundcard would have been better, but that's of course too late now.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 жыл бұрын
Brother the sound is recorded separately using a higher quality mic on a fixed stand at the same fixed spot equidistant from two speakers in both set-ups. The sound and video recording are mixed thereafter. :-D I want to reassure you that as for sound, same mic, same spot. But thank you very much for looking out for me, I will never know my blindspot unless I remain open and welcoming to suggestions and observations. Thank you very, very much Buddy :-D !!!
@mcnyregrus
@mcnyregrus 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response :-). Obviously, I had no way of knowing that the video and the microphone came from two different feeds, but thanks for clearing it up :-). Still, recordings through a soundcard are much better. I use the NAD PP-4, which is a phono preamp costing around $150 that has a built-in A/D converter, but regular A/D converters (without the phono preamp) can be had for much cheaper (for instance from Behringer). Lastly, the Rega Elys cartridge has a dip in the frequency response of its treble, so it will sound a bit dark, whereas many other cartridges (or the Elys run through an equalizer) will sound brighter and clearer.

Your review is the best I have seen, a superb job! The subtle differences between the two, you wouldn't think there would be any differences. I would say the biggest differences came with the motor and the feet, and possibly the brace being 1mm thicker on the P3. I'm glad to see vinyl doing extremely well in Asia. However, I am envious you have a good selection of stores to choose from. Where I live in the US we have NO stores to shop. I have to buy all of my vinyl online. Are prices different between stores, or are they relatively the same. Thank you for the wonderful videos. Long Live Vinyl!!

Brilliant and detailed review. You dismantled every element of the acoustics like an audio engineer would. I have an old incarnation of the rp3-24 with a Dynavector 10x5 cartridge. Despite the wonderful depth of the music it does sound a little sluggish with a lack of treble at times so am thinking of this new model with a Nagaoka mp500 (has to be a Japanese cartridge for me). best wishes from London!

Thanks.Try and do more cartridge reviews. Your analytical approach got me thinking about how simplistic my listening approach is. Just curious on hearing how a cartridge can bring out certain sounds that I have in my head but with your guidance on the reviews of the cartridges done I forgot how important it was to go in depth and listen to the ways that other cartridges carry the sound. Well done on all your hard work with vinyl and all great things about them. You are a credit to the music industry.

Hi Ian, You did an awsome job again. Your comparison is in fact objective. My experience so far is (I got my new record player in the meantime...) that the sound is generally clearer now. As you mentioned - bass is better and more controlled now. I'm very happy with the result, but unfortunately my pulley is not silent - you can hear it, when the platter is running. So I have returned it to my local store, I hope the will find the problem. All the best

Thank you for the comprehensive review, I really appreciate you making the effort to acquire an RP3 so a clear comparison could be made. Because of channels such as yours (especially yours!) I have decided to make my first foray into vinyl, as such I am now patiently awaiting the arrival of my new Rega P3 at my local hifi store where I have placed a deposit. I have also decided to opt for the Ortofon 2m Bronze cartridge instead of the Elys2. Do you believe that the 2m Bronze would be a good fit for the P3?

What an wonderful review !!!! THANK YOU !!!!! The new Planar 3 is just gorgeus !!! What a lovely turntable. Considering the lack of extension in high frequencies compared to the Technics, believe me , the Nagaoka, AT and Goldring has more details in high frequencies than Elys. I had the chance of mounting a Nagaoka MP 11 ( old model ) in a Rega Planar 3 ( old model too ) of a friend of mine replacing the Elys ( old model two :) ) and I was surprised how better extension and details we got with the Nagaoka. For me, the Elys ( especially the 2 series ) has a wonderful musicality and a good punch, however, it does not track so well and, yes, lack more details and extension.

KKKKKK.....what a coincidence !!!!! Good to know that . Important to point out that the Elys2 is not a bad cartridge...far from that....however, in my opinion it is over priced . A very useful and informative review delivered in a really friendly and easy going manner, thanks! I have a vintage Rega Planar 3, over 30 years old, still used daily - I recently had the first problem with it, a burnt out resistor, which fortunately was relatively inexpensive to replace. However I am wondering whether it is now time to consider getting a new deck, and maybe upgrading at the same time, would you have any recommendations, I see in the video you have an Avid, how does that compare to the Rega? Also do you know the JA Michell Gyro Dec and if so how would you rate that? Best wishes, will keep on following your reviews.

Mr. Ian this might be an irrelevant question to the subject of the video but could you suggest me a synergy for the brand new Planar 6 I am goint to buy in a short period of time? You've done an exemplary comparison of these two TTs. Looks like the P3's new plinth stores less bass energy due to a stiffer plinth laminate and a thicker (less complient) span between the platter bearing assembly and tonearm mount. The midrange energy is probably due to improved tonearm rigidity. I suspect the treble issue is mostly cartridge related as the plinth and tonearm resonances are at far lower frequencies. I commend you for using only one Rega Blue MM cartridge to eliminate the variability of having two cartridges that may differ ever so slightly. I had a Rega Red cartridge that, although not as refined as the Nagaoka MP150 that replaced it, had a much higher output that better matched the levels of my other sources. In your experience, does the Rega Blue exhibit a higher output compared to other carts? Thank you again for the in depth observations.

The best review I have found on KZfaq. What a great comparison. Have you also tested the REGA RP3 2016 with the EXACT cartridge and the external power supply? That would be also nice. BTW: Have you ever heard of the brand Phonosophie from Germany? They are doing tuned Thorens turntables for ages and they sound awesome with their developed (with Ortofon) cartridges. They also do amps and other stuff. Maybe you want to test their racks. I own two of their amps, loudspeaker and a CD player. Even a Project Debut Carbon DC can't come close to the higher performing Rega P1. Even a ProJect Essential3 can't beat a lower priced OEM-made AudioTechnica ATLPW40WN. 2. Get the P2 or P3 (you are right!)💪😄👍. P3 is top value, top performance for the money. Enjoy your Miata ND!!!!!!

Dear Reza! How are you spinning thus far? Hahaha!!!... thank you for your kind encouragement. Will continue to work hard. And with regards to ypur query on the p3 vs the rp6, i have not done a direct comparison between them yet. Reports online has it that Rega is coming up with a lot of new models by the end of this year. And i reckon the rp6 will also be replaced by perhaps a new "p6" or some other model nomenclature, benefitting from the new RB330 tonearm, phenolic braces, Motor unit, cables, etc. Not sure if the new one would indeed have 2 layers of that "Optiwhite" glass manufacturing...but i guess so! :-D

Excellent review Ian - thank you very much. This helped me make my decision to order a P3 without a cartridge. In replace of the Elys Ive ordered a Nagaoka MP110. Do you happen to know whether the Rega 330 tonearm will need a spacer to accommodate the Nagaoka cartridge?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
Good choice Rob. I think with that kind of money anybody is spending, one deserves BETTER. And, not a joke when one needs to replace the Elys2 cartridge after a year or two of playing.... that would cost US$295! And not a joke when accidents happen (they do) ...coz if :-D one accidentally damages the cartridge: that is a US$295 worth of a mistake! The Nagaoka is USD115. The excellent Grado Green and excellent Goldring Elektra is only about USD100 each. We get MUCH better sound than the Elys2 cartridge, but utilising what I feel is an excellent platform of the P3: comprising of the great RB330 tonearm, cables, plugs, motor, bearing, optiwhite platter. I really congratulate you on your decision. My very experienced friend also decided to get the P3 without the Elys2 cartridge, and he has ordered the Nagaoka MP110 last Wednesday evening from ebay together with the Schiit Mani from schiit.com. He already has a great Linn MC setup, a very experienced guy. He chose what you chose. He thoroughly enjoyed the P3+NagaokaMP110+Schiit combo at my home 10days ago. His P3 has arrived. He is awaiting the Nagaoka and Schiit now. Should arrive tomorrow. Spacer needed :-) A small step to take. He is Lyndon, and he appeared as one of the chief speakers at the Vinyl Seminar #3. He is into pressings and very well versed in them, has 8 DSOTM pressings, and much much more. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abx2ZpeEqdPRqJc.html at the 5:40 mark. You are in good company Rob!!! Brother, Do go with the Rega P3 and avoid the RPM3. Tonearm is miles ahead, motor is so much quieter, plinth quality as well (more than skin deep, my DebutCarbonDC's gloss laminate has already started to peel off within a year of ownership). The P3 is a scorcher of a deck at this price. Add that to the multitude of michael lim, groovetracer etc upgrades and support and many friends with rega decks... you will be having extremely high quality sound with lots of fun too. Pride of ownership as well...and good resale value always, if the time comes. Warmest Regards buddy!! :-D ~ ian

Hello Ian and greetings from Florida! I have a question I'm hoping you can provide your expert wisdom and answer. First, thank you for all of your great videos! I watch and learn from them all. I'm going to be upgrading from a project debut carbon with 2m red. Although it has served me well, I'm ready to upgrade. I'll be going with the new rega planar 3. My question is... Which cart? The provided elys2 , the 2m blue or the mp110? Which would you choose? I listen to every genre of music. I do like a warm rich yet detailed sound. The new rega will be used with a shiit mani into an nad c356bee into wharfedale diamond 230's. Also if you recommend either the blue or the mp110 would any mods such as a spacer be required for optimal performance? Thank you for any insight you can provide!! Best wishes, Mark

I owned both, the P3 and RP3. I have to say though, the RP3 with EXACT is a winner. It sounds so bold! I'm not a dancer at all, but when almost any song plays, I have to tap my feet. It just has that effect. The P3 for me, is just a nice listening TT. The RP3 has personality. If that makes any sense... :)

I had been wanting a high end analogue sound system ever since college, but just recently was finally able to make it happen, and thanks to your video, I feel confident that I made the right choice in terms of my turntable. Very good comparisons, Ian. I wonder if you used the same cables would the differences be the same (I assume the carts are the same and aligned as such). I assume so, but would love to know is it the whole synergy or just the arm that is making the biggest difference... it is so hard to know because tables ARE instruments - they are synergistic and all the little minute differences add up.

Very good points raised up Chris!!!!! :-D THANK YOOOOOUU!!! Yet another great review, thanks for that. One question from someone who just want to get into vinyls... Rega P1 vs. P3, in combination with rather entrylevel Yamaha AS701 and Wharfedale Diamond 225, does it make sense to make the step up to P3, or would it be an overkill and P1 will do just fine here? Thanks a lot!
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 5 жыл бұрын
Brother Jozef😄, if finances permit, the P3 is great for its easy antiskating adjustability, glass platter that gives better speed stability, a better gloss laminated plinth finish, wool mat, and better captive phono cables that lead out to the external phonostage. Both the P1 and the P3 at each of their price points are indeed the best performing and offer the best sound for the buck in today's market😄... you can shop with confidence!!! Warmest Regards my friend.

Great review however how much of the improvement is the turntable itself and how much is the improved arm, and can you get the same or better by just changing the cables to the tonearm for a trueb cost effective analysis, what percentage of the improvment is down to the deck, what percentage is the tonearm, so we can truly understand whether it is beneficial to change and buy new or upgrade the older turntable? what is the price difference to now against the true price then based on spending power, some upgrades you casn buy will it take the performance beyond the new deck and by how much?
@HiViNywschannel

Hi Buddy!... I would love to be that detailed. But both decks are borrowed from the retailer and I would not be able to dismantle and unsolder off the P3's cables, I could not acquire two RB303s and two RB330s, But maybe I can leave that to you :-D my friend to carry out these tests. I didn't have the resources nor time to do all these that you suggested. Apologies that my review is not 100% complete... Great video and review. I really like your setup for the comparisons and the time you take to put all together as well as the music selection. I debating between Rega P1 and the Project Carbon EVO. I read they are both good for beginners and that both perform very good. What would you recommend base in your experience?

@@HiViNywschannel My friend after watching your videos I did not ordered the P1 but ordered the P2 instead. I am considering pairing the turntable with the Klipsch R-51PM. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make all these great videos.
