This video shows a brief description of the differences between a hand knotted area rug and machine tufted rug. Machine tufted rugs have become more prevalent recently. Hand knotted rugs are usually of better quality, clean up very well and will last a life time if properly cared for. Tufted rugs are cheaper to purchase but can be fraught with many cleaning challenges.

Oh man, I just bought a hand-tufted rug online. I have only had hand-tufted wool rugs (purchased from Home Depot, so we're not talking handmade anything). They wore like iron. I was able to use my vacuum with the beater, as well as the carpet shampooer, again, with the beater. Those rugs had open tufts, whereas the one I just bought has loops on the face. Perhaps therein lies the problem. Those loops can get caught in things. When they pull out, they leave a run like pantyhose. I yanked on one or two of the loops and was horrified. The rug is gorgeous, but I don't feel like babying a rug or replacing it in two years. That's why I paid for wool in the first place. Sigh. Live and learn.

That's a nice explanation- thank you for posting this. I would like to point out that the lesser qualities of a hand tufted rug are borne from overseas manufacturers: India and China, to name a couple, because of the quality of materials.

Sorry for the delayed response-I agree, most problems from tufted rugs are due to poor quality materials

Thanks for the video, fellow cleaner here in MN and I picked up a rug from a consignment shop for dirt cheap, pretty high knot count at around 391. No tag but the fringe and face yarns burned like cotton. Honestly I got the rug to practice cleaning on so I am not too worried about ruining it however it seems like a very nice rug. Have you any experience cleaning cotton/rayon type rugs? Could I use a cotton fabric shampoo in the rug pit? Thanks again.

Hi- Cotton and rayon rugs are the worst. Even using detergents that are made for Rayon (aka viscose) and cotton pile distortion and browning usually occur. I think using the cotton rug shampoo is a good choice. You can also finish with a fabric conditioner that is sprayed on the pile after rinsing and groomed into the fibers. Dry it fast and groom with a soft brush several times during the dry down Hop this helps

So, tufted rugs are hard to clean and they wear out quickly. That makes them made to replace. Why bother.

Why buy a tufted rug? Inexpensive so people will buy them Some insist on getting them cleaned

@@DavidMavilio Inexpensive throwaways are just paying over and over again for something. By the time you've done that 10 times you could have paid for a quality handmade rug.
