British poet, actor, writer Benjamin Zephaniah appeared on Reggae Strong in our 1990 season. This interview and his performances were shot inside and outside of Central Park when he was visiting New York City on September 17, 1989.
In this program, Benjamin is interviewed by our late director, Stafford Ashani, and he performs several poems acapella: "Dis Poetry", "Mi Green Poem", "Sun City, "The Day that I met Lady Di", and "I Love Me Mudder". Also included in this episode are two other poets: Faybiee Miranda and Mutabaruka and a News and Reviews section from Amy Wachtel, the Nigh Nurse. It's a classic reggae Strong program.
I am sad to have to present this program in the recent wake of Benjamin's death, but would like to conclude with a tribute posted by David Hinds of Steel Pulse several days ago:
"It’s a shock and sadness to us all, that this legendary individual would make his transition in the manner that he has. There was no end to this man’s creativity; a creativity that went beyond the imagination of most. Benjamin Zephaniah’s “Handsworth ghetto driven” energy got him to view the world with a different spin. It was a spin that wove a web of subjects matters that leave many, like myself, mesmerized as to how someone can break down complex issues for even a baby to understand. In early 2000, Benjamin turned down his knighthood, and initially I question his decision. To be candid, we debated for hours on this… But as time went by and the more I learned of his input and contribution to society, I began to respect his decision. Farewell, our friend.. you are now among the Fabiene Mirandas, the Mikey Smiths and many more greats of our era. Our Sincere condolences to his wife, Qian who is/was a true soul mate, his 89 year old mother, who’s gonna be missing her favourite son, all his family, fans and friends. Maximum respect to a man that has left us a wonderful legacy…"
R.I.P. to all the departed greats who contributed to this program.
