Printer defects come in many shapes and sizes. In this video we examine a few common printer defects and evaluate the their impact on the grade of a comic.
Printer defects: A defect that was caused by an error in the printing process, such as paper wrinkling, miscut edges, misfolded spine, untrimmed pages (Siamese pages), off-center trimming or inks, and misfolded and misbound pages.

Great video. The color spray was to let retailers know when they return over stock back to the distributors. The color stood for a month. I got my Aim Spiderman book back in the day as an insert in the Sunday paper with a coupon for the toothpaste.

Brilliant video. I have many comics that are in awesome condition BUT exhibit that bindery tear. I have often wondered how far CGC graders would ding my books for have this common defect. Sometimes finding particular issues without that defect is extremely difficult. I try to stay away from it generally, but it seems unavoidable in some instances. A follow up video would be great. Please note that the following are my opinions only. I'll address the bindery tears first, I am totally down with a minor bindery tear getting a near mint range grade depending on the severity. What I don't like is that I have heard other people say that it has no effect on the grade at all. The New Mutants shows a mis-wrapped comic of a different sort, because instead of being off centered horizontally the centering is off vertically, harder to detect and I understand why it is rarely seen as a defect by most collectors. Which leads me to the off centered miswrap (used to be called a progressive bindery defect, this was latter changed to progressive trimming defect when the Overstreet Grading guide was released), the way I personally grade these is totally dependent on the amount of the back cover that can be seen on the front. or the front on the back. The example that you have shown in my opinion should not be graded above a very fine plus, and then only if the rest of the comic is exceptional. While I am not completely sure why the spray was added to the comics by news stand distributors, I suspect that it had to do with either the route or the pull date, both would make sense to me. Finally we come to the comic with the edges of the pages showing, I think I addressed this previously but this is totally dependent on if the comic is cut before folding or after folding. If it is cut prior to folding then you will always have the pages peeking out from the cover, if it is cut after folding it will always be trimmed square. Because of this it is not to my mind a defect at all and should never affect the grade, this includes the idea that such a comic could conceivably receive a mint range grade. Other defects that were not noted by you included staple placement, and subscription creases. Why aren't subscription crease classified in the same way as some of these other defects, it is after all a part of the distribution process. As an example I received some absolutely gorgeous Tarzan comics from the mid fifties, that all would range in the fine to very fine range (one I would go so far as to grade VF/NM, but now I'm just bragging as I got them for a sweet price), except two had very light color breaking subscription creases, now if you look at these from a distance of about six feet, you can't see the crease at all, at four feet, you can barely see it and closer still it is easily apparent. Personally if I were buying a comic like this at a B&M store and it was graded in the fine range, I would have no trouble pulling the trigger. But the highest acceptable grade for a comic with a Subscription crease is in the low Very Good Range. Once again I would remind you that this was a part of the distribution process for comics that people had a subscription for from the publisher. Over all it was an informative video and I appreciate you taking the time to make it.
@KollectingKaos
@KollectingKaos 4 жыл бұрын
A little note about grading ranges, this once again si my opinion, First there is the Mint Range Comics, these are from Near Mint/Mint and above. Next we have the Near Mint Range, which are from Very Fine/Near Mint to Near Mint plus. After that there is the Very Fine Range (Fine/Very Fine to Very Fine plus), the Fine Range (Very Good/Fine to Fine plus), the Very Good Range (Good/Very Good to Very Good plus) and the Reader copies (Coverless to Good plus but with complete stories) and everything else. In addition these are broke down in other ways as,well you have High Grade comics (Very Fine to Gem Mint), Mid Grade Comics (Very Good minus to Very Fine minus) and Low Grade (everything from Good/Very Good and below opinions very on this one) So in summery we have a three tier grading system (high, mid & low) a 9 tier system, Mint, Near Mint, Very Fine, Fine, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor and incomplete and a 10 point system that has 26 grades. If this hasn't confused you just wait until I start making video's.
@RegieCollects

I think this a fantastic way to add to the discussion. You can disagree without being disagreeable. 👊🏾 You honestly raised some excellent points that I don’t have the answers too. Subscription creases are an excellent example of a known distribution defect that dramatically impacts the grade of the book. Maybe when CGC is on next we can dig into this issue. Thanks bud. I appreciate you adding to the discussion.

Very interesting stuff thank you Regie. I assumed it would affect the grade so that's a happy surprise and certainly opens up a collectors options knowing that. Definitely would love to see more on this topic. If I may suggest another topic: (given the recent conversation starter of Marvel stating Wolverines first appearance as Hulk 180 😬) I would like to have more of an understanding what is a cameo; first & first full appearance?? (And linked to that, who decides such matters?) I don't know if you've done that already but you have a great way of explaining things so I thought I'd ask! Thanks Regie appreciate all that you do! 💯👊🏻💯

The general definition is that a first appearance is where the character appears in the story and is named. This is why Hulk 181 is preferred over 180 (Wolverine). Thor 165 is preferred over FF 67 (Adam Warlock). Hey Reg, I have a question regarding a defect. I noticed one of my older books from '88 has a staple issue, where the bottom staple is perfect to the crease, but the top staple is almost completely towards the rear of the crease, although the book's binding is solid and shows no rolling or under/over wrapping due to handle. So it looks like the staple issue may have been a defect. In your opinion does this effect the overall grade if the book were to be sent in?

My favorite defect/error I have is my mis-cut copy of New Avengers #46. Its actually shaped like this: / |. Yep, the entire book is narrower at the top than the bottom. @Regie Collects ~Honestly I kinda flipflop on that. The defects on my Marvel Two-In-One #50, Marvel Team-Up #137, and New Avengers #46 don't interfere with my reading of them so I'm not replacing them. One I do need to find a replacement for is Excalibur #22. The black ink must've been low when mine came off the press. Sometimes the characters have no outline (on one page, Meggan's green costume isn't discernable from the green bushes in the background) Some speech bubbles are barely legible while others are completely blank. The only error covers I'm actively searching for are the infamous miscolored Fantastic Four #110 (cause its just odd) and the white version of Venom:Lethal Protector #1(I think the white version is better looking than the red or gold normals) I've got a direct edition Spawn #1, and have no desire to get the black ink cover errors. I have the green newsstand Adventures of Superman #500, but I'm not interested in the error platinum edition nor the regular platinum. The black cover direct edition of Adventures #500? Thats another story. I flipflop on variant covers too. I freely admit to having weird collecting habits.

I got a question I am selling a book that is pretty hot right now and it has a pretty solid black back cover. There does happen to be some breaks in color that either happened during production or the distribution..My question is to your knowledge does cgc makes “allowances” for such a defect given the cover is almost completely solid black and this defect is likely to have occurred during the books production/distribution?
@RegieCollects

My gut tells me that the book will get dinged. I say that because a binary tear or miss wrap for example can effect and entire run of comics unlike a scratch on an all black cover that could happen during printing, distribution, shelf stocking, etc. Put another way, are those scratches pretty widely seen on most copies of that book? Yes, it’s a splitting of a hair. The best thing might be to reach out to CGC.

I disagree with the “allowances” grading companies give on books. Whether it be age related or common defect, a 9.8 should be a 9.8, and it should properly represent the book in the slab. If that means the highest grade a book can get is a 9.4, then so be it, grading on a curve shouldn’t be a thing.

Given that logic all golden age books should be marked down for color touch and tape. All silver age books should be marked down due to distributor spray, dates on the covers, tape, etc. Just checking to see if you agree with pulling the logic all the way through.

@@RegieCollects . Yes, 100%. All the “allowances” do is add another layer of subjectiveness to an already subjective process. I would prefer consistency. Conversely, I guess the question is do you think two books, otherwise identical but one with a significant but common flaw should be graded the same?

The ready example that I use is ASM 800 that has a horrible binary tear. I personally went through every box at two LCS and could not find an issue that didn’t have a binary tear. Since then I have seen 1 ASM 9.8 that doesn’t have one but several ASM 9.8 that do. Does it bother me? Nope as I am okay with a binary tear being allowable especially with a healthy percentage of the run had one. A defect that is out of the collectors control. By this same token I am okay with allowance for date stamps, overspray. In that same spirit, I am okay with a 9.8 that has a miscut or a slightly misaligned cover. That doesn’t mean that I’ll buy those books but it doesn’t both me that they are 9.8s.
