In this video I will demonstrate to you several ideas on registrating the organ. I make use of the beautiful sampleset of the Schnitger-Hinsz organ from the Martinikerk Groningen. Of course, there are many more possibilities within the art of registrating, but these combinations are the ones I often use. Enjoy the video!

Heartfelt thanks for your very clear comments and demonstration of organ registration. Long ago, as a young seminarian (Boston, USA) I advised on the registrations for a fellow seminarian organist, and later as curate in a NY City parish assisted in the installation of a 32' bombard stop ( capped 16' ) suspended horizontally. What a joy: when played, I was never sure whether it was the nearby subway roaring into its station!🤔🙂. In later years, I oversaw installation of several historic organs in Vermont churches, successfully, but wish I'd then had your outstandingly excellent demonstration to use then to show my parish commities. Long ago, for me, as a concert organist, church musician, and organ scholar, you are, to my ear, unsurpassed!! Even at 80, I will return again and again to reference this demo -- and to the excellent concerts in which you personifiy in your exhaustive knowledge of organ sound and registration. MULTOS BRAVOS (and all best wishes to you, your lovely wife and child !!) You and your music are truly, especially in these troubled times, a gift from God. As a humble old musician and clergyman, to a young humane genius : thanks be to God, and you, for keeping our art alive!!!!!

I use to work for an Organ building company. Here is some really heavy food for thought. The pipe organ was one of the most complex man made pieces of engineering for MANY years. It is very under appreciated for what little technology folks had back in the day. The one thing that we will always argue over repeatedly is MIXTURES. heh. any organ builder will feud over the discussion of mixtures. its just one of them things.... :)

Thanks for all the explanations Mr. Van Hoef! I believe modern organs are a software miracle, being able to reproduce - almost seamlessly - the sound of the wind pipes thru the loudspeakers. I listened to one of this newer software defined organs, which looked similar to yours but not so good, and I initially refused to believe to my ears. Certainly there is a difference with the spatiality of tens of thousands of pipes - but the results are unbelievable nonetheless. I'm grateful that you have shown how to register your new wonder organ machine.

Thanks, Gert, that was fascinating and instructive. I play the piano and always think the instructions are all written down there on the page. To me, it looks like the written music for the organ is just a recipe and a lot of the art goes into the mixing and 'cooking'. If I had my way I would stick sellotape over the 'tremolo' button and write on it 'do not touch'!

I also learned in 2nd grade how to read notes. We had a music teacher that taught us how to read notes and take tests naming notes whether single, double or triple notes in the treble clef. I learned cords by having a cord organ growing up, soon there after I was able to play cords and treble clef. I would write the cords at the top of the treble clef staff and because I new where my notes were on the keyboard, I was able to play the pedal board on the organ. I had an organist at the church teach me to play the church music and add a note or 2 extra short improvise as I was playing. Then I played church services for a number of years. Now its just for my own pleasure playing an electronic keyboard. Also can play piano.

I am always interested in the pieces played when demonstrating in this way, of course i recognised a couple of passages from pieces but particularly at the beginning of this video i ponder whether its just made up passages or passages from longer pieces and if so what were they, in one of your videos from a few years ago you were playing a flentrop organ, the video clip was 1.47 long. I ponder what passages you were playing then too :)))

Thanks for this informative video on registration settings. You are truly a master on the organ. One question: how do you keep track of the pedals when playing two manuals at the same time. How do you find your way around the pedals without looking down being ready for the next pedal or pedals to be played next and as fast you play the pedals ????

@AL-ns1jm
@AL-ns1jm 5 ай бұрын

Speaking of registration....Jan was always a very active registrant for your work. You made great music together! No complaints about Marjolein...I am just old school when it comes to your early YT clips. and btw...if you could use a wireless headset microphone for your verbal presentation it would be easier to understand you. The regular microphone you use for the room is fine for the orgel but it doesn't deliver your voice as well especially when you are looking away from the camera.

Gert has been giving us music for free for many years now. His music opened our hearts and minds and souls, and hopefully wallets at paypal. Organ registers have been pressed, its time now also for cash register to be pressed. By now, founds and institutions should be competing, which will donate more and offer better deal, with no strings attached. I am probably slow in my thinking, founds and worldly institutions already donated, in which case, only eventual old strings should be renegotiated and detached.
