This is what I've done over the last few years. I came to the conclusion why have a movie in my collection that I don't like and it will never watch. When people come round and look at it, it says to them what I like.
@FernandoGastelo
@FernandoGastelo 4 ай бұрын
@@kiddcapri1711I used to think similarly and say when people come they should see a variety of genres across many decades to show how I enjoy and watch movies of all types. But then there are movies that even though I did enjoy I don’t see myself revisiting them any time near or at all. And secondly as I get older there are less and less people that actually come visit me and look at my shelves.

I don't think a physical movie collection is "weird" at all. Having a copy of your favourite film to keep is special. Streaming can take them away, buffer issues, re-edits to keep some people happy is no good! You like it, you do it and and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! 📼

Only regret I have is buying certain titles I didn’t like, now I’m trying to buy movies that really interest me rather than buying titles that someone says is a “good movie”, because there’s literally thousands of good movies, can’t buy them all.

Rent the movie digitally and watch it first if you didn't see it in the theatre/ cinema. If you love it then buy the physical copy. I only buy movies I really love and watch over from time to time. James Bond, Rockys, Rambos, Godfathers, Scarface etc.😅😅

I love having physical media. I'm an 80s kid. The whole Blockbuster era says it all as that was my childhood. I rather support the release and own it. Streaming services are going to constantly raise their prices, move the media off their service and move it to other services which forces us to buy more subscriptions, and they can also remove content permanently. Worst part is if you buy it digitally you don't really own it. So physical for the win for me.

Back in the mid to late 80s I started to collect vhs movies, I think I got upto just over 250 movies on video tape, now this is in the uk and to these were pretty much all cut versions of the movies I loved, once DVD kicked in after laser disc which I avoided, just found It too expensive to start collecting them at the time as I was still quite young, after dvd came out and being very impressed by the quality compared to vhs I sold all my video tapes around early 90s that were not worth much at all by then, after collecting a few DVDs over the years (no where near as many as my vhs tape collection), then came Blu Ray, of course compared to DVD it was another level, I just thought here we go ago and actualy gave up collecting physical media as also the internet came along and I just thought screw it i cannot be bothered to start again, so then got rid of all my DVDs which by then where worthless, but being addicted to my movies and enjoying owning them, I started to collect Blu-Rays and now today we have 4k UHD and I have now started to merge my collection in to this media. Just some how find online streaming just does not appeal to me. At the moment I to have quite a collection of blu-rays, 4K and funny enough DVDs. Also I do find it far easier to find the uncut versions of movies these days and can finally enjoy movies as they were meant to be seen.

We who love movies may collect for reasons that other people just don’t share, and that’s okay. I personally treasure my physical media and am actively building my collection, mostly by buying at thrift shops since prices are now so low. Anyhow, more power to you and your collection!

Just watched your video. I enjoy your content and passion for collecting. I'm a new subscriber as well. I've been collecting physical media since.....well, the 80's. I'm 52 now. I never jumped on the streaming bandwagon either, because I knew at some point those that owned the rights to the films I love, could at any time withhold those films for multiple reasons. Banning films because they are not PC enough is one of those reasons I've noticed happening as of late. I enjoy ownership of physical media because it allows me to be in control. I can watch what I want, when I want to watch it. And streaming services to me, are mostly filler with very little substantial content. I enjoy the box art and all the extra content that we don't get with streaming. One day, probably sooner than later, physical media will stop being produced. Look at the video game industry. To me, that's sad. In the future, there will be nowhere to go, because everything will be done online. Groceries, clothing,etc. No need to leave our confinement pods. Hopefully, we will be able to keep our physical media. Cheers from Virginia, USA.

The problem with streaming services is that they edit some of the movies they put on their platforms and you cant watch the original versions there. For example the young anakin force ghost in return of the jedi instead of old anakin. Also some movies are just not on any of these platforms.. so physical media will always be valuable and desirable

To me, not owning physical copies of your favorite shows, films, and games is what I would consider weird. Streaming is wholly risky if you depend on it to maintain the availability of any films you enjoy. Buy it once, own it forever. I know there are some relatively obscure titles I love and adore, and if I were waiting till they were on a streaming service to watch them, I would never see them again. Life is too short not to do what you love. As for the Jolly Roger, it's necessary only in some rather uncommon instances. There are some shows, for example, that never saw an official physical release, and the black/grey markets are the only way to acquire them. Oh, and I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a Blu Ray copy of Dogma at a flea market for $3 a couple of months ago, and I was stoked!

There is nothing weird about this. In a way its quite cool, as long as its not negatively impacting your life. Personally, I would love to collect physically more. I notice I don’t enjoy movies, or music as much when streaming. I’ll click watch listen for a little bit then click something else, then again, and again until I’m bored of looking and haven’t actually watched or listened to anything. With physical I put it on, and that’s what I’m watching or listening to. Too much choice is not an enjoyable experience for me. I also have that problem with gaming. My modern console/and pc I have hundreds of games, but I always look at them all and think “I don’t want to play any of this” versus the 6 games I have on GameCube, or the few I have on SNES. In a few years when physical media is impossible to get beside second hand sources your collection could be worth many times what you paid for it. I have no regrets in buying it. I sell and collect and just laugh at so many companies complaining about sales and then cutting money makers like blu rays. Bestbuy cut selling media shows their lack of understanding what that means for their stores. Most of the Bestbuys only carried 4k combo packs which put the media cost at way to high for just general movies and Walmart not having media at Christmas time. Media sales for Oppenheimer and Barbie where the highest physical media sales in the last 15 years. I also have a regal pass to see new movies so I have no reason to ever have any media again if they completely go away. I will not buy non physical anything, so digital downloads are out of the question.

Cool collection. I see many bangers (good titles). Although there may be a streaming service offering 28 days later *currently* that doesn’t mean it will be forever. Having it physically gives you a quick and easy dvd that can be upscaled if you own a blu ray or PlayStation 3. Or you have the blu ray. Did they release that?

When you invest in physical media, you're not just securing entertainment for yourself, but also for those who inherit your collection. While some argue that streaming services offer everything or suggest piracy as an alternative, it's shortsighted to rely solely on these options. What happens if costs skyrocket or circumstances change, leaving you unable to access any movies and shows? Personally, I've built a collection of around 350 movies and 10 TV shows (most if not all shows, aren't available for streaming). Having them on Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray means I don't have to worry about ongoing expenses just to enjoy a film. It's a relief to know that after taking care of bills and groceries, I can simply pick something from my collection without dipping into my budget again. While I do budget for new additions, it's comforting to have a library of entertainment available whenever I want to watch something. Plus, special features are fantastic! I usually enjoy the director's commentary version as a podcast while playing games on another screen, but only after I've already seen the movie. Experiencing a film for the first time in that manner wouldn't do it justice.

After that I'll chase the common stuff. I've also been collecting video games for the Nintendo Switch, 3ds, & xbox... eventually playstation as well, but when it comes to pc I'll buy it digitally if it's cheaper than chasing it down physically for a better price. If a game is the same price and I want to add it to my collection I'll buy it physically on console.

Man, the background of your video here is absolutely amazing and interesting. I’d even go so far to say that it will be interesting to 90%+ of people who ever see your collection in person. That’s a great reason to feel good about it on top of it obviously being an investment. I will suggest that you slow way way down now and focus on creating a different investment worth just as much or even having a nest egg worth just as much. I doubt you’d regret the collection as much if you were comfortable and confident in your other investments and rainy day hurricane and monsoon fund. I’d also make sure to create a “database” of your collection, document the ever loving shit out of it, and if you want you could link a cell to the value of each that auto updates. I have a decent Pokémon trading card game collection of sealed, graded, full sets, and singles cards. Lots of vintage, and it’s all documented in an app that tracks the value, condition, price paid to current price, and it’s really fun to keep updated and watch. Current value at $13k-$14k and it now feels like a nest egg to me.

I’ve always enjoyed trying to acquire the highest quality item that I want for the lowest price I can get it at. I’m that way with everything I buy. I brag about how little I paid for nice things, not how high I paid. I did this with my Pokémon TCG collection and it really shields the investment from most losses. I gotta say, if you paid full price or paid high prices for the movies that soon after purchasing lost half their value, you really have to accept the fact that you fucked up or just remove cost and monetary value from your hobby/collection entirely. In the end though, a collection is always about monetary value. Even if you are preserving the media, the media ultimately is nothing more than a monetary value. And one day you’ll be gone and your loved ones will be left with your collection. So make sure you document everything and the prices paid. If they aren’t interested in it they will be taken advantage of.

I use to collect Transformers (G1), I've collected 1:43 diecast cars, baseball hats, basketball cards, and other things that I enjoyed. As long as you can afford to collect what you want and not waste money or ignore what's important, I tell people, go for it. I almost thought about collecting Arcade Sticks as I love the 3 I have and I love fighting games, but then I think, I don't need to go down that rabbit hole. Haha.

I have a large media collection but it's all digital stored on my NAS. A lot of it was physical at one time but I decided that it's not really the disc I care about it's the access. I want to have the media to show younger generations but I don't need the disc for that if I have it stored locally. Having the disc is not the only way to preserve the data. Not to mention as optical becomes less and less utilized by the industry devices to play the media may become scarce. I decided to sail the open seas when companies decided to stop selling me products. If I can't buy something digitally and still "own" it then I don't see how downloading it is stealing if buying a product isn't ownership.

You should check around your neighborhood if you live in a big city like me. Tons of people have put out, usually NY the steps or somewhere near the front of the building, VHS tapes, CDs, and DVDs to the point I have accumulated almost 40,000 movies in the past 3 years. I had to open up a storage locker because it's to much to have in my apartment. I also have 5 DVD players now. I spent less than $200 for all this. It beats the pants out of streaming services any day.

The reason I have physical media is because they mess with these films if they don't match the current politics. Plus not everything is available on streaming platforms & in fact I've had films taken off me when i've bought them on these platforms

I will check for TRUE LIES on VHS in quebec, and Pirates of Silicon valley as well, never saw it I think. Some lost movies and remade cuts need to be preserved as originals arent' rereleased...like old Star Wars like those we watched on tape in the early 1990s (got the trilogy in original form on VHS same year as Ace Ventura Pet Detective. My MOST watched VHS ever. Back when some movies cost 60-80$ a tape sometimes late 80s.

Dvd special features were great 👍 some of the menus as well hit different not all obviously but some are really well done unique. Trouble with a service is you paying and sometimes you hardly watch anything because you dont feel like it at that time its convenient but only in certian aspects where as if you own your favourite tv shows movies you have full contol of when you want to watch it. I also find the digital stores dont have every movie available to buy because of somany reasons

I don't regret anything about collecting DVDs. So many movies have gone out of print or have been so heavily edited, it is hard to come by the originals nowadays. Also, I don't like being at the mercy of some random streaming service which may not exist in a year. There are more pros than cons with owning physical media. Oh yeah, DVDs have lots of EXTRAS which you will never find online.

Having sold Hifi TVs and sound systems from 2004 to 2013, I learned a lot of things about media and cinema in all senses of the word. PLASMA tvs were at the peak but cheap DEL made samsung push that (they were NOT winning in plasma it was Panasonic) AND SONY had even better : SXRD, crystal silicon display technology. Nothing compared. But too expensive for the casuals. 4K is inferior to what SXRD trech would have been had DEL cheap pannel not screwed up the Plasms - SXRD techs in profit margins.But darn do I enjoy younger people getting to physical media. F*** digital media. You oiwn nothing, a licence to access is you being a fool. Start getting Physoical media now people!

DOGMA! Think I got the DVD around 2000. This was an amazing movie from day one. Was always a fan. REmember watching it the same year as Men In Black on back then "onn demand almost" video channel VIDEOTRON Super Ecran (Canada's Quebc NETFLIX in the 1990s). Dark comedy, like the later "GOD BLESS AMERICA" by Bobcat Goldwaith. TV shows that get limited DVD prints : I bought "Serie Noire" (Quebec) on DVD, season 1. Nowadays its nowhere on streaming. And it'S the best quebec cinema ever on TV this side of PODZ and Denis Villeneuve level photography / Art Direction.

You compare spending 55,000 dollars on movies as equivalent to spending in other hobbies like homes and cars. But for someone who can’t afford a home, 55,000 is a crazy amount of money to spend. Perhaps yes, saving a down payment would have been better…
