If I could find a town like Mayberry, I'd move there and never look back.

Im here in Mayberry, Talbotton, GA and it is GREAT! 1 city policeman that sleeps in his car all day at the tiny 1A football field. I can walk to the tag office, library, post office, and Courthouse in less than 5 minutes to all 4. Everybody waves like out on the lake. The last new house was built probably 30 years ago. No 4 lanes in sight for at least a 30 minute drive to even see one. The Flint River winds through the town and has an old Mill that is restored for canoe rentals.

@@kimshane2949 Come on. Houses are cheap here. My home will be paid for after only 5 years. It was abandoned so work had to be done. Almost all the houses here for sale have similar stories.

Well, if Mayberry turned into a "regular sin town," Barney would have been thrilled, or perhaps terrified, to have his hands full with real bad guys to arrest.

He did not usurp Barneys authority, he overrode it. Usurp would have been to use Barneys authority. Andy did not use it but instead used his own.

This episode shows how the producers originally envisioned Barney: a background character who would appear every now and then to break things up. However, after they filmed the first episode, they changed their minds and decided to make Barney a more prominent character. As Sheldon Leonard put it, "When we filmed that first scene between Andy and Don, we knew we had something!"
@donschmidt82032 жыл бұрын
Only Don Knotts as Barney Fife would book and fingerprint an 80 year old woman for jaywalking! "Naughty deputy!" No show mined comic gold from the silliest situations like the Andy Griffith show. The more over the top Barney Fife behaved, the better it got. Yes, Mayberry may have been desperate for lawbreakers. Never for warmth and comic relief.
@azmike35722 жыл бұрын
Didn't Knotts get 4 Emmys for his role?
@diananutt15172 жыл бұрын
🌿🍄 And I think writing parts for older folks enriched the whole atmosphere so much! Andy and Sheldon Leonard brought in actors and actresses from the silent movie era...people who had had to communicate with their bodies and wonderful facial expressions!! In later sitcoms, we all know that an older person was played by a much younger person made up to look old. What a waste of those golden gems from the early days. Give me the real McCoy every time! 😊

Did older women really dress like Emma here, even in the early-to-mid-1960s?
@kennethelliott12776 жыл бұрын
Amazingly, yes, or at least close. My grandmother dressed in similar fashion, although without the hat. She was born in 1889, so likely close in age to Emma. Way different times. Imagine how we'll be judged 60 years hence.

Also remember, the show was filmed 1960-68, but I believe it was supposed to portray 1930’s North Carolina. Much the way “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published in 1960, but was supposed to be 1936 Alabama.
@dwightstewart71815 жыл бұрын
AZMike .. When in public (shopping, church, etc), yes. Men also tended to dress better. T-shirts, for example, were undergarments, not a place to display slogans or pictures. Younger women also much more frequently wore tasteful dresses. America has declined a lot since. Now men can't even be bothered to shave or bathe.
@azmike35725 жыл бұрын
Dwight Stewart: You can see another example of people dressing up more in the past if you ever see newsreels of 1950s World Series games. Many men wore short-sleeved white shirts and a long tie, the women wore dresses. But it was the times.
