**This video is based on a 98 carb model, FI models are a little different and you will need to make an adapter plate.**
The reg/rec is one of the most common failures on the Honda Blackbird. In this video I swap the unreliable old unit for a Shindengen FH020AA FH012AA MOSFET version and talk about the reasons why the original units are so unreliable.
This video is based on a 98 carb model, FI models are a little different and you will need to make an adapter plate.

Very useful video. Thanks . I have a cbr 1100xx model 1998 and I have done 53000 kilometers without any problem. The only thing I can mention is that when the motorcycle is parked, the battery does not hold its energy for many days. There must be a very small power outage somewhere. Maybe it's from the dust that can exist after so many years in some connections. For this reason every time I park the motorcycle for more than a day, I disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. I usually need a new battery every 2.5 years. Always be well and have good trips. Greetings from GREECE !
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Try disconnecting the battery and put a meter, set to show amps, between the negative cable and the neg terminal on the battery and see what current you have. On a carb bike it should basically be zero. From there you can start disconnecting things one at a time, or pull fuses and try and narrow it down. Do you have an alarm/immobiliser fitted?

Hi Sera, great videos I have the 2000 FI version of the bird. I also have upgraded but used the Eastern beaver looms for the wiring (plug in and play) they bypass the loom reducing electrical resistance through the loom. I did find that the plug from stator was still a weak point so soldered those wires and heat shinked. I'm fairly local to you being Norwich way so would like to chat blackbird info. Mine is a little less standard than yours with straight bars, 4-1 pipe and loads more.

Great upgrade, thanks for doing a Video. I've only owned my Blackbird since April. Another issue I've found online is the dual braking. There is some extra kit bolted to the fork, apparently it can seize, needs greasing. Maybe some content for you. Also this loom plug seems to be an issue on the Fi models, not sure if yours is injection. Your push bike camping follower....
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 3 жыл бұрын
The secondary master cylinder on the front fork applies the rear brake when the front is applied. It's true the can seize. I am planning a video on the linked brakes at some point. I am just trying to figure out how best to present it. My bike is carb, so I don't have the loom plug to worry about. 😁 Thanks for watching! And stay safe on whatever form of 2 wheels you are on! 😅

Hi Sarah, Excellent video. I have a 2007 model Blackbird with 20k on the clock. The red FI light comes on after 20 to 30 miles. No fault codes are coming up when the engine runs. It goes off after turning the engine off and it restarts ok. On a Blackbird forum it has been suggested that I do a loom fix. Do you think doing the loom fix will sort this. Where do I get hold of a Yamaha FH020AA. Where do I get the new connectors from. Have looked at a Rectifier from Jaws for £98. Many thanks

Thank you for the video it was very helpful. I have a 2007 Blackbird with 15k on the clock. I have no issues with the battery but have noticed the seat feels very hot after about 50 miles. I wondered if this could be the Regulator Rectifier. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thank you.
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pleased you found it useful. It's unlikely to be the regulator, they are under the side panel. It could just be the hot air flowing over the engine and warming the seat. Mine can get quite warm, especially if it's a hot day or I get stuck in traffic.

Hi Sera! I just followed your tutorial and kinda dumb question but my plugs are tight ASF and I can't seem to push them up to be flush like your plugs so I was wondering if you could take a guess as to why not? Terminals are correct, they all made a clicking noise once they were properly seated and the plugs are facing the correct way and going into their corresponding slots. Should I just try muscling these mfers in? The plugs seem abnormally tight. TIA
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 3 жыл бұрын
If they are actually clicked/latched on then you should be good to go. Try pulling them off and see if you can move them. They go on with a 3 or 4mm gap.

Have you ever tried a blackbird with vfr 800 handlebars fitted, I did it in mine but cannot find a huge difference, honestly, what I find useful is a pair of heavier bar end weights, They reduce notably vibration at 4000

Got a speed four and i had a new R/R last year. Hardly rode it this year and now i can't go more than 5 miles on a fully charged brand new battery. I have the usual wires going to the r/r but i noticed there is a black wire with a ring connector connected to the left side where you put the bolt in to fasten to the frame. But also i have a red wire with a ring connector coming from the same place that isn't fastened to anything. Its just under the seat. Not sure if its always been there since i had the bike "fixed" or if its the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

@@MotoSera yeah. I cant remember at all if it was connected to the battery as my memory is so bad. I didn't want to cause any damage. The black wire goes to where I mentioned. Red one just dangles Not even sure what it is because before I didn't have them just the regular wires into the rr. They must come from the alternator or stator as its had a new one of those too. I think I'm going to sell it as a non runner because its been a pup and I can't throw any more at it.

Purchased my first Blackbird, seller was pretty dishonest/omitted details about condition of bike. It’s a 96’ battery isn’t charging, I want to overhaul the charging system with Rick’s RR and Stator. Is there any particular brand you recommend over Ricks? Also the turn signals are intermittent, seems the toggle is faulty, and the brake light doesn’t work. It’s a project bike, but still I paid $3,200USD for these electrical issues and I’m not too happy about it.
@MotoSera
@MotoSera 2 жыл бұрын
The Rick's kit is a good option if you are in the USA. Turn signal switch is a common issue and easy to fix. Take the switch gear apart and spray it with some electrical contact cleaner and work the switch to clean it up. Sometimes you can get it in there without dismantling the switch completely. Good luck and I'm sure you will get it sorted in no time!

You can just tape it up out of the way. It's not needed for the FH020AA That should leave you with 3 yellow, 2 red and 2 green. The yellow go to the input of the reg rec, doesn't matter what order. The 2 red are the positive and the 2 green are the negative. 2 red go to the positive output and 2 green to the negative. Make sure you get the the right way around! And disconnect the battery before you start.
