It's so funny and strange how we can "aww" over something that our instincts are wired to fear. A threat posture and dripping huge fangs that could kill us with no effort should be terrifying (and under the right circumstances, it is... I'm certainly glad they're not native to my locale), but it's also ridiculously cute in its own way.
@BugsandBiology
@BugsandBiology 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's to do with the fact that you know the spider is under control, so watching it get cranky is kinda amusing. Also, their bites are generally not life threatening - less than 20% of bites from most funnelweb species cause severe symptoms, and they're pretty shy so they keep to themselves and bites are rare. Of course, still seek immediate medical attention if bitten cause you wouldn't want to take the chances.

Spiders like to be held and pet. It’s all about knowing which species to handle and taking proper precautions. Know your spiders before you keep one as a pet. Not every spider has an anti venom and not all spiders bite. I’ve held tarantulas before. They have armored plated bodies with a lot of hairs. Those hairs are itchy but soft like silk. Plus they normally don’t bite and if they do it’s usually harmless.
@BugsandBiology
@BugsandBiology 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt any spider, with the possible exception of jumping spiders, actually enjoys being handled. Most will simply tolerate it. Tarantulas can get stressed out by handling, and it's a risk to them cause they're quite vulnerable to fall-related injuries. Also many tarantula species can be quite defensive, with some old world species having temperaments worse than many funnelwebs, and old world tarantulas also have pretty potent venom.

@@BugsandBiology Also I know not all spiders are friendly. I'm simply speaking from my own experiences handling some. I even held a black widow once. It didn't bite or react at all. I simply moved it and it's eggsac away from our garden to a more shaded and well hidden area nobody would ever go to. I also kept calm and cool when holding them. Spiders will bite when scared or threatened. So it's always good to keep a cool and calm demeanor. From what I've learned spiders will not bite if the person holding them is gentle and keeps absolutely still. When transferring spiders off your property move slowly so as to not startle the spider. Then gently place it on a bush or well hidden space.

@@BugsandBiology Are funnel webs soft or hard? I can never tell. They kinda look like tarantulas crossbred with garden spiders. It's so hard to tell what they feel like. I've seen plenty of spiders similar to them here in the states. One spider I know likes to funnel in bushes and make a web in them. Like a funnel web it's an ambush predator. It waits for prey to get snagged in its webs and then punches onto them.

It's pretty easy really. Funnelwebs mostly keep to themselves, so you're not likely to encounter one. And if you do, they're more scared of you than you are of them.

@@iangarner8857 As long as you're not disturbing them or come close to treading on them you're okay. The males are more of a problem though since they turn up in people's shoes because it's shady and cooler in those than being outside. Females very rarely leave their burrows. They are dangerous for sure. They're not a sackful of puppies, but at the end of the day they are much more scared of you than you are of them, so they'll try to avoid you as much as possible.

Isnt the southern tree dwelling more dangerous than the sydney and has no anti venin cure also.
@BugsandBiology
@BugsandBiology 3 жыл бұрын
Sydney funnelweb antivenom is effective against all funnelweb species. Both the tree funnel web species have a higher recorded rate of severe envenomation, but as neither are anywhere near as commonly encountered as Atrax robustus, I still wouldn't say they're more dangerous overall.

Nah, these spiders barely move around in nature, and get stressed out by prolonged exposure in large, open spaces, so captivity is fine for them.

I think your handling of these spiders causes them more stress than is necessary. Female funnel-webs rarely leave their nest and would be terrified if forcibly exposed, particularly under bright lights. I've seen other people use paintbrushes to coax the spider gently. I'd also urge you to get better enclosures than tupperware!
@BugsandBiology
@BugsandBiology 3 жыл бұрын
They needed to be rehoused, I wasn't just evicting them for the heck of it. Also there's nothing wrong with using plastic Sistema containers, because as you said yourself, they're sedentary and don't care much about space, provided sufficient substrate is present and there are anchor points for webbing.

I've watched his channel. But seeing as funnelwebs are more photophobic than most tarantulas, I prefer enclosures with a degree of opacity, as they tend to come out more often. Plus funnelwebs don't require as much space as tarantulas and plastic enclosures are easier to modify. I prefer to keep funnelwebs in enclosures small enough for their triplines to cover the entire area, that way feeders are less likely to go unnoticed.
