I've had several folks ask if I could do a video showing how to rehouse the three basic types of tarantulas (terrestrial, arboreal, and fossorial), so I figured that it was time to get 'er done!
For those who already have their rehousing down, perhaps you'll just enjoy seeing my male T. stirmi, juvenile P. vittata, and male P. crassipes. :)

Its rare to find a nice guy like you on KZfaq, but its even more rare to find a Nice Guy on KZfaq who is into this hobby. Great vids Tom. although you are nice in your own way, you do remind alot of tarantulaguy1976 who unfortunatly is not uploading anymore. What i am also hinting to is: Dont quit KZfaq. I think the reason I love your channel so much is because you show a very realistic method of rehousing tarantulas. As much as I enjoy other channels' more "entertaining" rehouses they always make me a little nervous, just opening up both terrariums and poking the T vaguely in the right direction. I think they can give people the impression that this sort of thing is a lot more stressful and scary than it actually is if you just do things calmly with the right equipment. Really helpful video.

First off, so sorry for the delay in replying! Ugh. And thank you so much...I truly appreciate that! I like to show calm rehousings, as that's what we should all shoot for. They don't all have to be crazy.

Hi Tom! I know all your beginner guide videos are a couple of years old now, but I've been watching them as I prep for ordering my first T and I've found them so useful and reassuring! Just wanted to say thanks! Even though I'm buying a old world as my first (Australia, very limited in our choices) I'm feeling much more confident and ready to try it all. Thanks so much again for these vids.

I'm gearing up for my first OW, so I came here to brush back up on some basic good sense. I started off downright terrified of my GBB, but last night I managed to rehouse her quickly, gently, and safely, even getting some pictures of her in the catch cup. Immediately after, I rehoused an A. geniculata- both rehousings took maybe fifteen minutes tops. Wouldn't have been nearly as competent in my husbandry if not for videos like this.

Thank so much, bud! :) I just had my second escape ever the other night while rehousing a sling. I got sloppy and tried the old "poke and pray" (just tried to prod it into its new enclosure using a brush. Dumb move. The sling ended up my arm and on my leg. haha. Billie had to bail me out. haha

Thank you so much, Tom. Your videos are really calming. I didn’t realise you were an ex-arachnophobe, too. I had to rehouse my juvie B albo today and she bolted out of her new tub and it panicked me a bit. The bottle tip at the end could have saved me all that stress. In future I’ll see if you have a video before I do anything, rather than after. Edit: I just saw a post of yours on AB that answered my question.

Your channel is truly a gem. I'm a 51 year old guy who's just getting back into the hobby. Growing up, and through my 20's, I've had many T's, but had to get rid of them because of my wife's fear of them. Now she's softened up a bit. So here I am. Your channel is making the re-learning curve much easier. Plus, there are so many new pieces of info that you're sharing that I had no idea of. Quick comment though; when transferring an arboreal from a tall deli cup, if you remove the bark & whatever greenery you have in it, why don't you just use the deli cup it's already in, as the "catch cup" for transfer if there's not a lot of substrate in it? If you invert the cup slowly, the gentle cascading of the substrate can act as your paintbrush, coaxing the T into it's new enclosure? Please let me know if I'm missing something. Thanks again!
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, Lou...welcome back! :) So glad to hear that the wife has softened her stance a bit. I talk to a lot of guys who are desperately trying to convince the Missus to let them have some. The answer is...I've done that before. haha. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I stopped doing it that way because I've had the substrate (especially if it's moist) clump up and fall, hitting and startling the T. That sent it bolting. I try my best to keep them calm at all times, I have a better, more predictable transfer if I coax them out. I find it easier to control where they are going and minimize mistakes. These are just the methods I use, and they work for me. I encourage folks to use whatever technique works for them. :) Thanks again for commenting!!! - Tom

Hey there Tom, long time subscriber and podcast listener to the podcast. I think a cool topic would be the virtue of multiple hides. I have a caribena versicolor that had chosen a hide I setup in one side of the enclosure. Also, I had given her another choice too. After spending about a year and a half, she abandoned the original hiding spot and moved over to the other option. Keep up the good work bro!

Great vid and I recommend others to do this. I didn't follow this advice and my own the other day rehousing my Balfouris! Two hours later found the bugger. Hi Tom and Billie!!! Great video you guys and VERY informative. I received my first avic Tues and have seen first hand how these little things teleport, smh. I thankfully had her enclosure down in a pretty deep bowl, well I accidentally dropped a roach on her and all I saw was a blur, lol. Thank God she stayed in the bowl. Even though she wasn't in the least bit aggressive I could tell she wasn't happy with me, lol. I managed to get her back in her home. She stayed hid for abt 10 mins then made her a web and grabbed her roach and has been in the same spot since last night. I dread when the time comes to rehouse her. I hope she's mellowed out by then, lol. Yal have a great weekend!!! God bless

Your transfer method seems so simple. I love watching your videos. You speak so clearly and you are very intelligent. For beginners in this hobby we need all the correct information so accidents do not happen. I was VERY afraid of spiders however over the summer my grandson had me catch a wolf spider he found under his bike. Since then my fear of spiders is almost gone. I plan on getting a tarantula after Christmas. I just can't decide which one to get. I want one that has some color to versus plain old brown/black T. Any recommendations on which T I should buy? I live in Maryland where we have all four seasons. I don't know if the climate of the state has anything to do with which T to buy. Thank you for making your educational videos.

Thanks so much, Katie...that is really nice of you to say! :) That's great that you're getting over your fear of them, and even COOLER that you'll be getting one after Christmas. I got my first over 20 years ago in part to get over my arachnophobia. I'm in Connecticut, so we get the hot, humid summers and cold winters as well. So, anything I keep would work for you. Have you seen my video on beginner species? I would recommend the Mexican redknee (Brachypelma hamorii) or Brachypelma auratum (a little harder to find). They have a black base color but gorgeous yellow/orange/red bands on their legs. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJ1nlaV3qLW7Y2Q.html Check this out if you get a chance, and we can chat after. :)

Thanks for the super helpful video! I love my little c. versicolor sling with all my heart. Right now she's in a tupperware with holes on opposite sides to get that good cross ventilation. ;) I use a piece of this super long branch of beach wood I was super lucky to find. I got a saw to cut off the piece smoothly and figured it would be great for it to use to web off of and make a hammock. What she did instead was climb to the top of the wood right on to that smooth circle where it was cut and made a little tent right there. So cute. She's going to be so sad when she can't fit there anymore. Anyway, she HATES when I have to snap the lid back on. I know slings are usually skittish, but have yours ever been so jumpy?

First off, Mary, I'm so sorry for the delay in responding. I just found a bunch of comments that I missed! Thank you so very much! And I've often thought about that, and I'm honestly not sure. It seems the ones from more hospitable and tropical places (where there is more consistently warm temps and where food is in abundance) grow much more quickly than those from arid and less hospitable regions. Perhaps the slower growing ones have evolved to have slower metabolisms due to their harsh environments?

I love hearing that you were terrified a of spiders, whether you meant just small ones or all in general it's nice to see how far someone with a fear came. I'm afraid of spiders but I don't want to be. They're an awesome species and beautiful too, can't wait until I can get to a point of rescuing instead of killing and maybe one day even keep one. I recently got a tarantula tattoo in my neck so the sooner the better lol
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 жыл бұрын
I was afraid of ALL of them. Hahaha. It didn't matter how small (although large ones were particularly terrifying/fascinating). I never killed them, as I always found them so interesting, but they would freak me the heck out. We used to move them to the basement using a cup and a piece of paper when we found them in the house. If you spend enough time caring for one and observing it, it really does help start to make them less scary. It DOES take time to get over it, though. :) If you've already got the tattoo of one, then you HAVE to get over your fear soon. ;)

Hey Tom, great video again! I was always wondering about the big plastic tub you're using, why don't they run out? I was about to ask you and here we go, answered already! i have used the bathtub before when rehousing my P irminia as it is my first "faster" T and did feel more comfy doing it there than in my living room with waaaaaaay to many places where it can go to but it is indeed not very handy as my bath is fairly and i need to bend over to get into it. Guess i'll go find me a big plastic tub too and try it out :)

Thanks so much, Koen! Yeah, most will just circle that tub and run for a corner. A little spray around the edges does a good job with slowing them down, too. :) Yeah, the tub works great for some people, and it's definitely safe. It just hurts my knees and I feel like I'm limited with my movement. Plus, the videos wouldn't be nearly as pretty. haha

Hey Tom Question how difficult would it be to rescue a Mexican Red Rump from the current conditions she or he is living in, without unnecessary shock or stress, The enclosure is webbed up pretty good, which means he or she has been in the same one for quite some time. I am seriously considering trying to save this one from that dang pet shop I mentioned in the email i fired to you some weeks ago Critters. The Red looks to be in fair health but sluggish. Have no info on the feeding schedule or last molt as of yet. I need your Assistance on what to expect possibly. I will take some photos next time i am down there this weekend. hes about 3 to 5 inches at best from what i can tell. I Can get everything i need asap for rehousing thats not an issue

Hello, Shogun! Thank you so much! Yes, you can keep them in there until they hit 2-4" inches or so (depending on the species). If it's a slow growing species, like Brachypelma, Aphonopelma, or Grammostola, I usually move mine at around the 2" mark. Hope that helps!

Hello, just wanted to give you an update on my P. Mttallica that i queried about a few weeks ago that wasn't eating, he she ate last night, a small meal worm. I woke up this morning to find the p. Metallica on the enclosure side where I could see a white cremey like substance arround the mouth. I assumed it was the remains of the meal worm. I just came home from work to find p. Metallica on its back and curled up, im hoping it's meolting but there isn't any sign of movement at all to indicate its melting, I believe it may be dead. Please what are your thoughts on this? All my other t' s are doing great, no problems with any others.

I'm a first time tarantula owner and I have a curly hair that made a pretty big burrow. Only problem is that it dug out almost all of the substrate under its hide and I'm very nervouse that it might crush it if the burrow were to collapse. The tarantula also covered its burrow and molted a few weeks ago so I have no idea how to go about this. Do I just leave it or do I carefully try and dig it out so I can fix the worry?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 2 жыл бұрын
Unless there is something heavy above them (like a large rock or heavy dish), they are in no danger if the tunnels collapse. They will just dig themselves out. Also, they reinforce their dens with webbing, which helps to hold things together.

hi :) Why do most people only keep the "smaller cousin" of the T.Blondi instead of the T.Blondi? the T.Blondi is quite bigger, right? :)
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, Kristian...great question. Actually, they're not. There is this myth that the T. blondi is so much larger, and part of that is because it was the first real "giant" spider everyone talked about. The T. stirmi can get just as large and looks nearly identical to the blondi. In fact MANY people trying to buy a blondi end up with a stirmi and don't recognize the difference. The T. stirmi is also much less expensive and has proven to be more hardy in captivity than the blondi. You are basically getting an identical spider that is easier to keep an for much less money.
@kristianxoto
@kristianxoto 6 жыл бұрын
ok, thx alot for the answer :) I had just always heard it was bigger but thx for explaining that there is no difference in size :) Today I am going to unbox my 7 new m.balfouris and put them in :) and tonight it will be the h.pulchripes :) looking alot of videos on how to do it the easiest mainly because the balfouris are in seperate vials. they were fed 2 days before shipping to make sure they can go 5 days to settle in before I feed. was told to give them some days alone to avoid a bolting. I am just nervous on how to get all of them in the vivarium one by one without one escaping. the first one I got was NOT calm. came calmly out of the vial and then started circling the glas. I did start a dubia colony, a hysser colony and a cricket colony. also have meal worms and grasshoppers to vary their diet. Now i have 8 fossorials and a terrestrial so I am looking for my final T for now and thats going to be an arboreal, hoping a c.versicolor sling. I dont feel anywhere near ready for a pokie. yes I know i started with balfouris and now a pulchripes but pokies scare me with their speed and potency. so looking for a more "friendly" arboreal :) But again thx alot for clearing up the differences and why so many stirmis are in the hobby :)
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders 6 жыл бұрын
No worries...a lot of folks think that. It's sad, really, because I think that the T. stirmi goes overlooked in some instances. Did you see my original housing video when I put the 9 balfouri slings in? Give them several hides and starter burrows to run into. If they run, they will often run to one of these and then relax.
