It really says something Shiro Sagisu. His music in Evangelion was able to capture the essence of somber human emotion. Helping base the theme's concepts of nothingness and isolation. And to the message to the Japanese people about the dangers of isolating themselves from each other.

Spoilers. I keep on overanalyzing the part with her at the window in the opening. Waving through a window is a common expression for someone who is always on the outside looking in and is never fully connected with others. Rei looks like she's about to knock on it, like she wants others to see her as an equal and connect with others instead of a servant or an extension of Gendo, but she doesn't know how. So she stays in her current position, at least until she finally decides to break away from Gendo and become her own world-ending being. She reunites with Lillith, who I've read that her soul is from, freeing them both from the things that used to bind them, and doing what she wanted, which was help Shinji end the world. And then help him unend it. Unfortunately Rei II never got to experience this freedom. She only got to realize that she wanted to be with Shinji before getting blown up, unlike Rei III who got to revenge (murder?) Gendo.

Her entire life and future was wrenched from her and she was powerless to stop any of it and suffered things worse than what anyone should have to bear. It's just so sad. Of all the characters in Evangelion, I think she got the shaft the most. And of all the people in the show, I think she needed love the most.

Realmente este debe de ser uno de los animes con mas trascendencia en la historia. Si bien tratar temas psicológicos y filósoficos en el anime era algo que ya se había visto, este es distinto. Sin sobrevalorar a la serie (pues claro que no es perfecta), lograron crear algo fascinante. Y claro, esta canción no es la excepción.
