The historical facts about this story are sad because Mary Queen of Scots was used as a pawn by her mother, Marie de Guise, Mary's mother, Regent & widow of James V, of Scotland; and Henry II King of France for 13 years!! Mary Queen of Scots was actually sent to French Court when she was 5 years old and not 6. She was five and Francis II was four when they became engaged. French Court was where Mary was instructed and learn to speak five different languages, taught history religion, music, art, etc. BUT she was always a very strong, outdoorsy, athletic and very well-behaved girl. She was very much like the character in Reign ( Smart & VERY CLEVER, kind, strong headed, independent, beautiful and ever so sweet BUT Mary Queen of Scots was not with him to be nice or she would kick butt). The difference between Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth the first is that Mary Queen of Scots was Scottish and she would do the butt kicking herself where is Elizabeth would have somebody else do it for her. Lol Scot rebels! At the beginning of the series when Francis was Teeter tottering between being such an entitled son of a b**** ( as Sebastian referred to him); I was thinking to myself that had I been in Mary's position at age 15, I would have left friends and returned back to Scotland to rule my country after being in France about the time that Francis was messing with Olivia! Francis was blowing hot and cold. He cared for Mary one minute and devoted himself to her, and then turned around the next minute and was saying " they didn't have any control over their Futures because they could have an alliance with another country at any time" blah blah blah.. I was wondering how many modern-day women would put up with such fickleness from a man before they would walk away. 😂😂😂 Sebastian always loved Mary deep down and was always able to put her first. YET, Francis learned by true love and an example set by Sebastian. Sometimes he had to be a little bit of a bad King in order to be a good husband. Lola in the illegitimate child is of no true historical fact because Francis had no children with anybody but it did give the series good drama.

I am eagerly awaiting who they will cast as Lord Darnley because you're right, if done right it can be an exciting love story; although, I don't believe REIGN MARY will allow herself to wholeheartedly fall in love again after Francis--that part of herself died along with him. She will put Scotland first and above all...including her own happiness. I am not looking forward to Bothwell aka husband #3 either. I am more excited about Mary and her survival of keeping her throne now that she doesn't have Francis by her side.

the producers said from the beginning that theyre gonna stick to the main events of history, like francis and mary both dying. so i guess it had to be expected, although i agree that i wouldve liked to see more of them together. i only watched the show til the end bc i really wanted to know how theyd end it, not so much bc i loved it like the first seasons

But in the end when Mary dies they got to be together , was the most sad and happy scene of the series.

I stopped watching halfway into season one. I have a deep interest in history. So when I noticed that they were straying pretty far from the history, it bugged me and I haven't watched since, which is sad because it was the only show last year that I was really excited about when they were promoting season one. I love love love Megan Follows, though!

Jessica D Well you are missing out! The Love Triangle Arc in the first season wasn't that strong, but at the moment it is one of my favourite shows. I ofc see your point and I don't know why they had to be so far off history sometimes (Bash!). But I believe the writers heard the fans and try to stick closer to the actual events. The main stories are really intriguing as well as all the things that happen on the side of them. Adelaide Kane might easily be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, but I have to agree Queen Catherine has become my favourite Character of the show ;)

Jessica D I have an interest in history as well, but I do love this show. Like The Walking Dead, I see this show as pure entertainment. As much as they diverge from history, they do stick to the major sign posts of the major characters histories (like deaths and children, etc.). Just start watching this show again (there is a new episode on November 20th at 9) and just think of it as entertainment. Plus, this one character Louis of Conde (he is new to season 2) is extremely sexy to look at, as is Lord Narcisse

How is that different from shows set in the present? They make things happen all the time that aren't happening. I'm just saying. If they were staying close to history, they'd be about 13 and Francis would die about a year after they marry due to an ear infection. I'm just saying that the reason you aren't watching is a bit ridiculous. But to each their own, I guess.

But for you to say that it's ridiculous that I'm not watching because they're straying from history, which is something that I am interested in, is ridiculous itself. Now, shows set in the present are often based on superhero comic books or novels now. The ones that aren't might use current events simply as a backdrop for the show (for example, Obama might still be the president or a crime show that I like had a murder victim who was an Occupy Wall Street protester). But they have their own characters, own plots, own storylines, etc. They are not historically based. They're not taking history -- public knowledge -- and rewriting it. That's what Reign is doing. If someone goes and researches Henry II of France after watching an episode of Reign and sees that Bash never existed (which means there was no love triangle), or that Catherine's "real" eldest child, Clarissa, also never existed, or that the four girls who came with Mary (Lola, Kenna, Aylee, and Greer) were actually all also named Mary, what do you think their reaction might be? Also, the younger brother Charles was never betrothed to a girl named Madeleine. He married Elisabeth of Austria and had a mistress named Marie Touchet. Additionally, Mary never spent time at a convent in hiding. She went to French court at age 5 and was raised by Henry II for the next 13 years. And she actually married Francis when she was 16 and he was 14. They also never had children. And don't even get me started on the costumes and accents. All I'll say about that is that's not how they dressed in 16th century France and Scottish and French people did not have English accents. It reminds me of the movie "Marie Antoinette". They're supposed to be French (or Austrian in Marie Antoinette's case), but they're all speaking with American accents. Also, Francis didn't mortally wound Henry. The captain of the King's Scottish Guard, Gabriel Montgomery, did. Do you see where I'm going with this? When you learn about this stuff in school and then watch this show, it's frustrating that it's so historically inaccurate. When a person finds this stuff interesting, it's not ridiculous that they chose not to watch because of the historical inaccuracies. Seriously, could you imagine a historian who specializes in these people and this time period saying "this is the best show ever! I love this show so much! i don't care if they are drastically straying from history."? I can't. I would imagine he/she being more frustrated than I am about it. They couldn't even get Mary's hair colour and style right, for god's sake. THAT'S ridiculous. And what are they going to do when it's time for Francis to die only one year into his reign? Keep him on the show and have him grow old and grey with Mary with children, even though they had no children together (actually, he didn't even have any children at all, so that baby that he has with Lola is also a lie) and she remarried twice after he died and her only children came from her second husband?
