Why do some classrooms look the same now as they did 70 years ago? In this passionate talk, second grade teacher Kayla Delzer speaks about her mission to revitalize learning and the classroom environment. Kayla explains how to release the power in the classroom by giving students ownership of their learning and making it relevant to them.
Breaking down the four walls of the classroom allows her students to become globally connected - and you won’t believe the endeavors her students conquer by embracing purposeful technology.
Kayla Delzer is a 2nd grade teacher and Project Lead the Way Lead Teacher in West Fargo, North Dakota. In August, she will begin her 8th year of teaching 2nd grade and her second year with West Fargo Public Schools (WFPS). Teaching is her true passion in life, and she enjoys her job and helping children to love learning and become creative problem solvers. Her students are her focus in life; they are like family to her. In August 2014, she completed her master’s degree in Elementary Education.
She also serves on the Technology Task Force and Social Media Task Force for WFPS. Her classroom Twitter account, @tweetingtopdogs, has allowed her students to learn virtually with hundreds of classrooms and educational experts from all over the world.
Kayla has teamed up with several companies to improve the lives of students and teachers, and she works frequently with GoNoodle and Remind. She is highly sought after by educational and technology companies to preview and review their products.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Incremental change might get me to a place of comfort, then I'll be asked to change again out of my comfort zone, and again, and...we either evolve and expand, or shrink trying to navigate in a world we hardly recognize. To have the human factor available should be comforting to many individuals such as myself.

This is why I love Interactive Media. It really should be used more in classrooms. Teachers need to be taught how to tell what technology will assist and enhance the classroom, rather than discounting all of it as the same as the worst of it. Play is fundamental to learning, and is by definition interactive, with others and the world around them. Interactive Media, including video games (of course the value ranges), is the most immersive way to learn. Rather than reject the digital world, we need to embrace what it can do and use it to our advantage. Great talk.

Although I am not a mainstream teacher in a school as such but I found her conclusion is true at the core of how to make a change in a class and a change in student's life. Straight to the point, refreshing outlook on learning that should be reconsidered by all teachers really. Old methods might be obsolete in the 21 century as student has been born into high tech world therefore they need corresponding challenges so taking away technology from themthinking it's for their own good and protection, is definitely not preparing them to face the world outside. LOved the talk, the point at the end is solid.

You are amazing Kayla. I love that you are bringing light to this. It infuriates me that there are still so many educators who are unwilling to embrace change and meet the times where they are.- Social media and tech training needs to be part of professional development, implemented throughout each school district, and should be mandated for all. It's RIDICULOUS that in some classrooms in my school district the teachers have class blogs, websites, and use and teach tech in the classrooms, while right in the next room over, it's a scene from Bedrock.

I am all for having cellphones/technology in classrooms. However I am a strong advocate for it only being used in a responsible way. Students must receive the proper structure and system for the utilization of any technology in the classroom . Teachers must be creative but mindful of monitoring the instruction with purpose.

Yes, exactly. And I noticed there was no mention in the TED talk about what to do when students are using their phone for distractions and not staying on task. This is a huge problem. My husband has been teaching high school and while using the internet can definitely aid in the learning process, the majority of the time students are not using it for learning. There is a reason why the “cell phone hotel” or smart phone boxes are used.
