A typical animal of the Norwegian north is the Arctic Reindeer. We met this beautiful animal several times during our trip. Reindeer, which is called caribou in North America, is very well adapted to life in the freezing north. It has long fur with hollow dogs and a thick undercoat that protects the body from the cold. His muzzle is also furred. The hooves, which prevent them from digging into deep snow, are unusually wide for this reason. Reindeer is the only species of the deer family in which both females have antlers on their heads. Unlike many other mammals, they have a special ability to see in the UV spectrum, which allows them to find lichens under the snow, which form an important component of their diet. During the seasonal migration for food, they can travel more than 5,000 km in a year, which is the most of all land mammals. Reindeer is also the only deer species that has been domesticated by humans.
Osrstěný má i čenich.
