Hey Larry. Amazing video. It really helped that you showed the video clip to give us a chance to analyze first. Your step-by-step explanation was terrific. Especially since you explained why each good characteristic was a good one. I would have never thought that a narrow type chest was a positive! Great teaching style and friendly delivery. Wow. Beautiful horse! Love the way you point out his perfect conformation. Only problem is now I don’t want to go out and look at my horses. It’s too cold out anyway. 😆

I thought I had it figured out. Almost, I thought the colts chest was too narrow but your explanation was good. Makes sense..big on back, light on front. I thought it was short, to the point and very imformative. Thanks

Larry your're the best! You make it so easy for people with a lack of knowledge of horse confirmation to understand form and function. It makes me sick when I see people buy horse's for competitions and don't know what they're buying! This can cause problems for the horse down the road. I appreciate this vid to educate people!

Really appreciated this video! Gorgeous colt too; I love how much bone he has. Interesting about the horses who are narrower through the chest - I never liked my mare's chest (always thought beefier was better), but what you've said makes a lot of sense. Any chance you'll be doing more similar videos?

Larry, I need to thank you for this Video, my family raises and breeds Morgans, came across a mare a couple of years ago wasn't exactly sure what I liked so much about her. Found out thru searching she had been trained for reining, no idea how well she was doing, looking at her two colts 1 is 4, 1 is 4 mnth, I was able to recognize all the good points that you pointed out in them and in her. It gives me a clue in which direction or farm should go with their training so they are now wasted!

Hi Jeffrey, Years ago I rode several Morgan horses. I really liked them. Of course now, it's getting harder and harder to find a true Morgan.

I really like your commentary. I also like the ample bone--the horse has really stout bones in his legs, and not tiny feet! I'd love to see him squared up, from the sides, front and back so viewers can see how the cannons come off the knees, etc. Thanks!

@rockingheartranchltd You are absolutely right. It can be pretty tough trying to evaluate the conformation of a yearling. They change so much as they grow. The trainer is this video, Luke Bakey is a top hand and has a really good eye for picking good horses. Larry T.

That gave me confidence that maybe I can pick a good one also, or was it just luck? Maybe I need to see some others just to be sure ;) At any rate, I might have a new appreciation for my kid's mare now that I have seen this. I am about to go out and take a second look at her...

Larry, thanks for sharing your expertise. These are the kinds of videos that really help in determining the status of own herd. I will be looking a little closer at our herd in an effort to highlight the real athletes. You mentioned that this gentleman purchased the horse as a yearling. My understanding is that it is much tougher to pinpoint some of these key areas that you highlighted as important at that age, eg. the length of the cannons vs the forearm. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, it's tough to judge the conformation of a weanling or yearling. They can change so much as they get older.

That's a long gaskin for a non-gaited horse for sure. His low hocks make it easy to track the way he does. And any bull-doggy horse I ever rode was less able or willing to 'move'. Great vid:)

I'm having my first reining lesson today with my paint horse. I'm actually sad because my mare isn't built like this. I don't know what to do with her if she can't rein. My problem has been that my mare stops too hard. I try to go over her head! She slides a ways and then props. I was hoping the trainer could help, but maybe she's too heavy and restricted in front. I'm WAY too old to take up calf roping. Thanks to you, I'll have something to talk about with the trainer.

I have a question I have a 9 yr old QH mare. Would she be the right age to start cutting on? She might not get very far but as far as I know she hasn't had 1 day of cutting training but she has cow sense in her. My second trainer was on her and she galloped after a cow and cut it. He said not like a pro but the cow still went in the fence and never got past her.

I liked this horse alot. Have one question and that is about him being kind of sloped downhill ( butt higher than withers). It's not unattractive, but will it affect his performace?

As horses grow they will be hip high or withers high. They will usually balance out by the time they are 5 years old

This is great because you touch on conformation points that other disciplines desire, such as dressage and eventing!! Very informative, thank you. I would be interested in seeing videos of horses that aren't as good, compared to better ones, like this guy. Also, I love how red he is :)

After your thorough explanation, it makes me wonder if my mare (bred and raised and training. Is structurly cut out for cow work. I've always wanted to try Reining cow horse. She's built like a mack truck, I plan on sweating out her neck and throat latch. I'd love your critique of her, she's Highbrow Cat/ Dual Pep bred

Hey Larry! Quick question...would you venture to say that the deepness of his flank makes up for the smaller inner gaskins(from what I could see) in stopping ability? If you have one, will it replace the other? And which would you say is more important?

Hi Kaydin, I wouldn't say this horse's gaskins are small. Just "medium" size. Nothing I've experienced replaces "deep through the flank" when it comes to strength when stopping hard.

I thought the horse had a bit of a pencil neck but other than that he looked fine. But then again you don't ride the neck. His neck might fill in with age? Question - have you ever ridden a really good horse as a reiner or cutter that had a really rough or lumbering trot that was an exceptional athelete? If they do have a rought trot, would you say that their conformation is off?

This video was taken in February, 2012. It is now February, 2014. The horse has gone on to win a bunch and has been a finalist in several big aged events. So to answer your question, no there is not much I don't like about this horse other than a few minor things that were mentioned in the video. Larry T
