Inverted designs are etched into a clay cylinder before it is baked, so that when it is pressed and rolled onto a wet clay surface, the intended engraving is imprinted. This is functionally equivalent to any other form of feed tape storing information densely in 3 dimensions. So yeah, about 100 years, pretty wild!

If you fiddle with the fonts, you can instead divide each character into sections and combine the sections to make a character. For example, if you had a top section and a bottom section: I, J, and T could be made with the same top section template A and H could be made with the same bottom section template

I have to say, when I saw the thumbnail and title, I did not expect to see so many familiar engineering challenges. The last two projects I did for my friends' server were a) a piston feed tape with analog random access and b) a number display with analog input. Weird coincidence And now you have me wondering if a bidirectional piston feed tape is possible...

You know, you could use a hex decode, 0-15 through adding the values of two composters twice. That would give you Hex FF = 255 characters max. You'd have so much extra room for more characters. You could even just dumb it down to OCT 88 which should be 64 characters which is in budget and only needs two reads, 0-7 per composter digit and still gives you more characters to work with. Then, the added challenge: Copper Bulb Character Segment Display, each letter programmed on its own using the same Hex decoder.

You know the copper bulbs also have that same problem. A repeating pattern, truth or a little bit better than Redstone lamps, but still they share the same problem

Concept for another iteration: keep each individual letter stored in a separate 'cartridge' that can exchange its contents with a slice from the 'main' feed tape to move it to the display or back home to its cartridge, to achieve something close to random access.

this is really clever! I think this could potentially be practical in concept, if it is scaled down to cycle between a few specific phrases that are put into the system.

I absolutely love the aeshetic of this, and the decimal version is surprisingly usable, albeit still on the difficult side to make.

Dude, I freaking love this design concept! You've put out some really awesome display concepts, but this one is hands down the best I've ever seen. I have been working on a 3D maze that's 7x7x7 cubed that basically has 343 interior rooms laid out in a 7x7 configuration that's then stacked 7 high. Each room (cube) has a 3x3 door on all 6 faces of the cube, and all 343 cubes are inside a giant outer cube that has 294 doors that connect to the outside. So in total there is like 1,127 3x3 doors , 392 of those being horizontal trap door designs. Anyway, the idea is to have a player start out in the very center of the building to start the maze, with the goal of locating the one single outside exit door that isnt locked, somewhere on one of the six faces of the main cube. The catch is there is no straight line to anywhere because there will also be locked doors all throughout the facility in all directions, forcing the player to explore and remember where they've been to ever stand a chance of escaping. All the while the player is being timed by a stopwatch display on the outside, that depending on the chosen puzzle difficulty, could have the entire maze lock all doors after a specified elapsed time and shuffle the maze with them inside, then resulting in everything they had mapped out being invalid, and forcing them to start mapping all over again. If and when they do successfully locate the true exit door and make their way outside will the stopwatch be stopped and the time recorded along with that players gamer-tag. So future payers can compete against previous times posted, and the system will promote the player with the best time to first place automatically. The Ranking information would ideally be either permanently displayed on a dedicated display panel or have a recall function built into the primary display. So with such a massive amount of displays this build will require, I have watched the community closely for new display concepts that could bring things up a notch, and what you've shown here today is exactly what I've been looking for! I would seriously be grateful if you'd approve my incorporating the work you guys have done here into my insane build. If we could talk on discord i'd be willing to share my world files with you if you'd be interested in checking out the build so far. This project has far too much history to include here but suffice it to say, it's been in development since the xbox 360 and has had quite a few version changes along the way, with the latest being a ground up rebuild on a modded platform, so there's really no limits holding it back now, and something as incredible as this type of display system would really be amazing to see in a final iteration.

I had a similar idea previously, but by subdividing each character by row instead, though by column should work too, to reduce its size while still providing a large number of options for the character set, though I haven't made it yet despite the idea coming to mind over a year ago now.

A long time ago (I think 1.12) I made a scrolling display using repeaters on full delay, using a (I think) 3x5 resolution for each letter. I know I used a timing circuit to time each letter, into an encoder, and into another timing circuit for each vertical line of the letter. Ten years later I've never seen anyone do it. Probably because without red power you can't do vertical repeaters, and having it be flat on the ground isn't super useful.

Redstone power source instead of redstone signal? Are you reinventing the terminology too?? Godddamn.

I'm picturing a design that utilizes a segmented display with horizontal lines being separate, and the use of falling sand to launch segments into place. I feel like there's a lot of room for innovation here

I wonder if storing letters in a different order could increase the efficiency of the machine? Treat it less as a text display machine and more of a word generating machine. It may be the case that there is a 'best' order for each component based upon how often certain letters appear in words. For example, if the letter 'E' is the most common second letter in words in the english language, and the letter 'A' was the second most common second letter then it would make sense for the second module in the machine to have E and A come after one another and so forth.

It would be interesting to see something like this using dispensers with powder snow.

Do you really need to move 5 blocks for your 4 block high characters ? It seems like it would be possible to have only the characters in the tape, and only had the top and bottom black line when the correct character is displayed That would make the device 20% smaller and faster !

Could flying machines be used to break the character set down into 12 character segments? A solid rectangular prism of blocks would achieve higher information density, meaning each character would be in closer physical proximity to the display. Moreover, decoding logic could be simplified somewhat because rather than keeping track of your position in a gigantic 53 character feed tape, you just eject the current 12 character feed tape back into its high density storage position while simultaneously signaling the block containing the next character to be displayed to fly to the slimestone system that unpacks it and moves the desired character into the display position.

Would it be possible to have a regular and upside-down version to have two lines of text display?

I would like to thank you for telling me about the overloaded comparators trick. I'm sure I'm not the first to figure this out, but did you know that giving a calibrated sculk sensor a signal strength over 15 completely disables it? It's the silliest way I have found yet to make base defenses toggle off and on.

In the next version you should consider somehow separating each symbol in vertical lines and combining them to render the character. Thus you'll be able to render any symbol with relatively small tapes. In fact, you'll need a tape size of 2^n, where n is the height of the screen. But that would actually convert this system into an all-purpose mechanical screen, hehehe I have no idea how to do the wiring, though. Judging by the video, you need to have a single block space between each tape, that would be a problem And also, encoding system would be more complex, but this one is certainly solvable.

For the counting, can't you just compare the number of items inputed to the internal counter ? Say you get to a point where they have the same comparator power level and then pull an item from each until you get a difference (then move the tape) or a simultaneous drop (exact match)

I was wondering, is there any benefit to the new copper bulb timing? It's surely an overall nerf but is there any new use for it?

If all of the characters are represented with a limited selection of blocks, i wonder if you can do the same thing with block swappers or piston doors

Man, now I want to build this in my world. Only problem is, its singleplayer, so im the only one who will be reading it... maybe I can use it to track how many shulker boxes are filled up by a farm? Visual display so I dont have to keep opening the output chests to figure out if my AFK session is done yet

This is also why we have invented 7S displays ;) Couldn't you use a ton of block swappers instead? Then you can display lots of characters by a matrix of zeroes and ones?

Couldn't you separate each letter into 4 columns and move the columns individually, which would create a lot of overlap making the machine smaller, faster, and more efficient?

What if you have a bank storing all the characters, then when you want to display one you draw it out of the bank and push it to the front

DON'T FLIP THROUGH LETTERS!!! Instead flip through sections of letters. The letter A can be made up of two horizontal lines and two vertical lines, and to switch to a B, you just need a third horizontal line on the bottom. Would love to see this idea put together
