Exactly. I think she had this assumption that if she had the "basic" qualifications she should be a shoo-in for the ivy league college she wants. There are kids who have 5.0 GPA, SAT scores are 24-2500 and the top ivy league schools WANTED THEM, they were not scrounging around like some sniveling brat complaining as to what else they needed to be accepted but you are getting your 15 minutes just because you couldn't get what you thought should be granted to you. It maybe was your "I'm entitled" attitude that made them see you're not fit for their school. She look and speak like she's a 20 something year old, not a teenager.

Otaku Madness Indeed but she did have to write some sort of essay for those schools and she could have added "satire" to those essays.
@OtakuMadnesspwns
@OtakuMadnesspwns 10 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I'm interpreting your comment is that you are trying to say that she should have written a satirical essay rather than a serious one, to which I would remind you that when you write your college application essays, it's better to err on the side of caution and write a serious one. What if, supposing she did write a satirical essay, that the admissions people read it and failed to recognize it as satire (as many people did with her Op-ed column), therefore assuming that she was out-and-out making fun of them? If it's vernacular, it's easily recognizable as satire, since you can use different tones of voice to indicate so, but if it's writing, the reader might have a harder time recognizing it for what it is unless you state your intentions clearly. In order to pull something like that off, I think she probably might have had to write a disclaimer of sorts at the beginning so the admissions people wouldn't be mistaken. Better to write a serious one and save the satire for other times.
@lonerider92
@lonerider92 10 жыл бұрын
Otaku Madness No what I am saying is she most likely put that "satire" in her essay and that's why the colleges rejected her cause either, A: The didn't catch the satire and thought she was being a bitch or B: They caught the satire and were not amused with it.
@OtakuMadnesspwns
@OtakuMadnesspwns 10 жыл бұрын
And yet it's all speculation. I could say that she didn't put any sort of satire in her college essay, that she took it very seriously and wrote the best essay she could, and yet both of these speculations would be unprovable unless she actually reveals what she wrote for her essay. But I do agree with her; the college application process is a joke and totally biased.

I have no doubt that she got rejected because of her interviews. Just from seeing this one, her pompous aura stunk up my whole living room. These days, elite colleges look for more quirk, and less stereotype. I mean, someone got into Yale by writing an essay about PIZZA. They have THOUSANDS of other people applying. If you're only worried about your numbers, and saying what you THINK they want to hear, in your essay and interview, then you're just gonna be lumped in with all the other basics. Tough luck. No one to blame, but yourself (Suzy), if you're that adamant about blaming somebody.

she's so annoying. honestly, just go to school and get your degree because in the end, the degree you get is what's most important. going to an ivy doesn't mean you'll be more successful than people who don't. it's your degree that gets you the job.. stop whining about not getting into "top schools" that just have a lot of name recognition and go to a school, make the most of it, and graduate. god damn.

So you're telling me you wouldn't be pissed if you dedicated your entire high school career studying useless and rather uninteresting subjects (such as Math) and got rejected? Why do we even learn Math anyways? That shit is so annoying and encourages no originality or creativity. Oh yeah, and the SAT and AP Literature exams are utter bullshit. The questions seem to ask for a "proper" opinion rather than a factual answer...and then times you.

***** I don't know, he kinda has a point. I mean, the math we learn is kind of useless, especially if the career of your choice doesn't involve math. I would like to become a historian, but would I have to do slope intercept form or quadratic equations for it? Now I do think it is setting people up who do want to take up a field involving math, like writing physics engines for games or a math teacher, but for people who don't, it is kinda useless. Except maybe adding subtracting, multiplying and dividing. You do need those for receiving/getting change, leaving tips, taxes, counting the distance between time periods, etc.

***** Although, I am an incoming computer science major I would say that the humanities are important. There needs to be a balance in all aspects and levels of life. By focusing on the humanities people learn how to connect with people effectively. If everyone focused on theory, or if everyone focused on STEM society would essentially fail in some way. Money is not everything and art may not always pay the bills. Somehow these lessons should be interconnected in all classrooms. Whatever... I am just blabbering about some utopian society in my mind

Yeah, as soon as the college admissions officer realizes that the applicant brags/is cocky about their intelligence levels and isn't' modest about their grades they immediately look the other way. The Ivy Leagues want a kid who can benefit them. The only reason I am a bit shocked is that she was part of that Senate program which, I have heard, is highly selective and that alone could have been a contributing factor into her getting accepted.

@ThisAllSoundsGood 10 жыл бұрын
Here0s0Johnny There's no irony and no humour in what she wrote or in her interview. It's one long pity-fest of an essay that stereotypes the people that do get accepted. Her opinion mainly involves people of color as the reason for her failure: she didn't get accepted because either she wasn't a person of color or didn't use the "misfortunes" of a child in Africa. You want a good example of irony? Here she is complaining about not getting in because she doesn't bring diversity and that she doesn't have Navajo, Pacific Islander, or Cherokee blood. She laments that she wasn't born into an Asian family with a "tiger" mom. Guess what? Diversity or not, almost all of these campuses are ~50% white, so based on demographics she had a much better chance of getting in than any person of color.
@ThisAllSoundsGood
@ThisAllSoundsGood 10 жыл бұрын
Here0s0Johnny It all boils down to the fact that she doesn't deserve to get accepted because she wasn't honest. She did all of these activities and volunteered not because it was the right cause for the charity or organization, but because she only wanted to get into an Ivy league college. You should volunteer because altruistically it's a cause you believe in and getting into these schools would be a bonus. Her intentions were hollow and superficial, that's why she's so bitter.

I disagree actually. As a soon-to-be college graduate, I would definitely do things differently in HS as well just to make my track record look better. Matt Sezer I would say I have to agree with you on this. Whether or not she's using "satire" as a means of expression is up for opinion because one would first have to find the element of humor in her essay and interview. I personally interpret her response as bitter and hypocritical as well. Her prejudice of those accepted into the Ivy league and uninformed opinion of why people volunteer lead me to believe that she was not truly ready or mature enough to get accepted. The fact that she had no contigency route if her plan failed was further evidence against her acceptance. In my own individual experience in healthcare, I used to work with a physician who once said that he often felt that residents from lesser known colleges frequently performed better than those from colleges with grander reputations since the notion of entitlement was not factored into their motivations.

Average is 1500. You have to remember that vast segments of the populations don't go to Ivy League schools. Standardized tests are more about time and effort than actual intellect. If you study for them and take them 4 or 5 times like many do, you will most likely get significantly better scores. I took the SAT once and got a 2170. I didn't apply to any Ivy Leagues because I likely wouldn't get in, I won't kid myself, and because I really started looking at colleges my senior year when you basically have to start freshman year if your plan is to go to the ivy league schools.

I am so tired of whites/asians complaining about diversity as a factor in college admissions. I, like this girl (though much less arrogantly), have dreams to attend elite schools and instead of commiserating about acceptance rates in the single digits with me, everyone (non-black) tells me:" You're black, you're a girl and you were raised by a single mother. You'll get in." News flash people: YOU STILL HAVE TO BE EXCEPTIONAL even if you're a minority. So what I'm a black female? I'm competing against every other one just like me who has higher test scores, more extra currics and volunteers every summer for the orphans in Timbuktu.
@jimmyz.6956
@jimmyz.6956 10 жыл бұрын
Still, you're competing against a much less competitive group than whites/Asians have to compete with, and while you still may need to be above average, you won't need to be nearly as "exceptional" as a white or Asian applicant would have to be. But good luck anyhow, it's definitely a stressful process for everyone, regardless of race.
@jimmyz.6956
@jimmyz.6956 10 жыл бұрын
+areawiper Yes, some people have unique circumstances, but not all blacks do, and some asians and whites do, so that should be conveyed through an applicant's essays, not just their race. It's a messed up generalization. For example, I think it's fair to have lower standards for people from lower incomes, since they have struggled more, but race isn't nearly the same thing.

***** Okay so no.1) Slavery and college admissions are such drastically different issues that a comparison between the two is baseless and arbitrary. no.2) I agree that slavery should not be used as a weapon against whites. That's stupid and unfair. But, should it be remembered and taught in history class just like, oh I don't know...every OTHER tragic event in history? Yes, it should.

Bottom line is, Asians and whites who get into ivy league schools have worked harder, on average, than blacks/Hispanics who get into the same schools. That's just the way it is. Yes they have struggled more, as a group, but not every single black/Hispanic applicant has come from worse circumstances than every single Asian/white applicant so there should not be this huge push to accept blacks/Hispanics therefore causing the competition for Asians/whites to become ridiculously intense.

Wait listed at Michigan, UNC, BU.. all three of which I thought were at least a match. Difference between me and this joke of a human being- I appreciate that everyone gunning for ivies, for whatever reason (prestige, specific opportunities, etc.) works hard and is driven, not just me. I was bitter for a day, but life is how you react to, and cope with, failure.. so I've moved on. The ivies are out of my mind and I'm going to try my best to get admitted off of UNC's wait list.

The reason she got rejected isn't because she is "too boring" it's because these schools exist to be exclusive. They are only prestigious because they are the oldest, have high rejection rates, and cater to wealthy elites. I think what holds her op-ed back, was making a criticism of these ridiculous application qualifications, and instead should have focused on why these institutions don't need to be so exclusive, and how that ultimately holds academia back. edited for spelling.

I got rejected from my dream school, I didn't bitch about I just when to a state school where I am perfectly content with myself. Although I do sympathize with this girl at some points, she comes off as entitled and doesn't react to failure well. I didn't get into an Ivy either but I didn't put blame on anyone other than myself. How will she get into an Ivy league school if she can't even show she's mature enough to handle failure. I am a kid younger than her and I have to say this isn't the truth. 46% of Harvard student are white; every other race combines to form the rest. She didn't get in because it was her fault she didn't try as hard as the student who got 2400 and started 5 clubs. I just can't stand it when people bitching about this shit its not unfair its completely fair.

Although I'm not sure heikiu96z meant it that way. Colleges didn’t lie to her, she just didn’t listen to what they had to say. Ivy League and other top schools are very up front about the fact that you have a greater than 90% chance of being rejected and that nearly every applicant has near-perfect SATs and GPA, has an impressive sounding internship, did a lot of community service, etc. Colleges care about the kind of person you are as well as the kind of student you are, and based on the incredibly pretentious tone of everything she said in this video, I can’t imagine admissions offices liked the kind of person she presented herself as.

I don't know what her unweighted GPA was, but I am certain it was close to 4.0, thus her GPA was certainly in Ivy range. Her SAT is also above the 25th percentile of Yale and Penn's admissions. Her stats seemed great for Ivy league; her personality, on the other hand, was absolutely not.
@aaauut
@aaauut 10 жыл бұрын
25th percentile is not that great. Those below the 50th percentile generally have some sort of "hook" - legacy, special circumstances, hardships, stellar extracurriculars, etc. And why are you certain that her unweighted was close to a 4.0? I have a 5.0 W with a UW of 3.7. My GPA is being boosted 1.3, so she could very well have far below a 4.0 uw and still have a 4.5. Going off her stats alone, there is no reason to have the expectation of admission.

Honestly, she got rejected because she was unlucky. Her stats make her like any other smart and qualified ivy league applicant and being qualified gives you maybe a 10% chance of acceptance. You can't be mad because you didn't get into an ivy league or similarly competitive school. The college process is so absolutely ridiculous and making a big stink about it won't solve anything, it's most literally a crap shot. I just finished the college process and I saw kids get into ivies that I never thought would in a million years (who weren't super diverse child prodigies) and people who were ridiculously over qualified get rejected. Even saw some of that weirdness with myself. Also as a minority I get really angry when people talk about how people get into schools because of diversity. Fuck you, I got into my colleges because my stats were higher than the averages for those schools and I do lots of extra circulars, and I also got rejected from schools that I was very well qualified for, maybe even overqualified.

If you write something insincere, guess what....nobody wants a smart-ass in their university. You can have stellar grades, but at the end of the day, the kids that DIDN'T write something satirical or insincere were more apt to be accepted.
