Rejuvenating a dim VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) on a Pioneer CT F900 cassette deck!

Today we attempt to rejuvenate a rather dim VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) on a vintage Pioneer CT F900 cassette deck.
Will I blow it up or will I be successful?

I have 80's tuner and have dimm issue on its vfd. And I saw your methods try on my tuner. It works good!! Thank you very much!

Way brighter IMHO. I/we don't know about it's longevity but that's a moot point. You needed to do something. Good job!

When you drop the voltage go slow, otherwise filaments may break.

My CT-F1250 display is not glowing in the middle, will something like this fix it?

Awesome. I don't have a power supply like that, but could a 12V 250ma wall power pack (such as a typical phone charger) be used? I think, yes. Or even batteries with resistors ?

oh i didnt knew that, my vfd from Pioneer SA7800 went so bad that it didnt even showed anything, since i dont have variable voltage power supply, i used my good old transformer ac to dc bridge first at 3x15sec at 10volts, it wasnt really did much, then i included some copper to that transformer so the dc voltage became 13volts i ran it once again 3x15sec, and it got definietly better, then i decided to include 1-2volt more of copper to the transformer, so i got 15volt dc, the wire in the vfd was at the point quite bright, so i ran it 3x15 didnt made much heat, but when i turned it on, the blue vfd light was definietly brighter, but its not perfect yet, its like your casette deck before rejuvenation, keep in mind that my vfd didnt gave any light even if i turned off room light source. it was pitch black. And i thought that my vfd is dead. Should i keep running 3x15sec (or bit longer time like 20-30sec) dc voltage for rejuvenation?

I have sony mhc p99x. 125w small mini ...its fan does nt work and it gets hot around 60..70 C. can i use computer fan? will it burn if fan is not working?

I have a Pioneer CT-S740S tape deck with a dim display. After removing the rather dark plate in front of the display and putting out the lights in my room, I can see that there is some life in the display. Checked the voltages to the display: 4,3 VAC to the ends of the filaments and -31,5 VDC between ground and the filaments. The FL tube is attached to a separate board and the voltages come from the main board, where the power supplies are. I might try to disconnect the FL tube from the board and try to rejuvenate the display the way you did in the video (the flat cable between the boards is not removable). The nominal voltage (which according to service manual is -32,5 VDC) - how much do you think would be enough, or just put enough voltage to see some glow...

Is this filament contamination known to happen on all VFD displays? I have got Yamaha receiver and the display is very very dark. I wonder if this method has a chance to recover the display from that condition. Another option I read about is to remove orange color filter. The display will be blue, but at least visible. What would you recommend?

it worked for me, mine was pitch black, so i thought my vfd is fully dead, and it became like Antics Audio's pioneer casette deck vfd brightness of blue before rejuvenation, my target is it being fully bright, im on my vfd to further rejuvenate it i guess. But first, make sure if the power that the vfd runs is voltage multiplier, then check the capacitors running it. In my case of using SA7800 amplifier vfd, it dont have any voltage multiplication, so my vfd was gone bad.

I have a Yamaha RXV390 and removed the peel-off orange optical filter, mainly because I could not see how to to access the VFD circuitry. I was pleased with the result.

Excelente me parece bien como quedo, tengo un CT-F950, pero este esta bien, tengo algo parecido pero es con un Expansor Pioneer RG-2 el cual tiene algo gastada la pantalla, intentare hacerlo con este a ver que tal me va, gracias por la ayuda.
