"Arjuna Ranatunga who was the captain when we won the cricket world cup in 1996". Is this sentence correct sir?
@EnglishwithNonis
@EnglishwithNonis Жыл бұрын
The sentence is incomplete. Your clause describes Arjuna, but doesn't state what happens after the clause. Give me a call for further explanation, because it's a bit of a lengthy one. 0768348661. Thanks.

@EnglishwithNonis

Please close the gate since the beggars wandering in the street might come in. This is a better way. Rather than using 'in case', since is a much more suitable word in this context. Thanks.

Why did you miss " , " of "who" sentences in the last sentences ?
@EnglishwithNonis
@EnglishwithNonis Жыл бұрын
A comma is used when the relative clause part is not essential to understand the meaning of the sentence. However, in this case, 'who was driving recklessly' clause is essential to understand about which subject it is spoken of in this sentence. Hence, it is not required to use a comma in this sentence for the relative clause. Hope this explanation is clear. If it is not clear, please call me on 0768 348 661 to give further clarification. Thanks.

I reckon you refer to the sentence "Malinda works for a company which makes furniture". The relative pronoun in this sentence doesn't describe the person, but the company. That's the reason why the relative pronoun "which" is used in this sentence. If we rewrite the sentence in this way, then the relative pronoun "who" is possible. "Malinda, who works for a company, makes furniture". So, for the first example sentence that I have given, the right relative pronoun to be used is which. Hope my explanation is clear.
