Relaxing Winter Camping in a Windstorm

This week's video, I'm bringing you to Greer Lake Campground in the Crow Wing State Forest. It is near Crosslake, Minnesota. I got off work Friday and saw the weather forecast was not looking good for outdoor activities. Saturday was calling for 30 mph winds with gusts up to 40. There had been multiple guesses of snow totals. I think by Saturday night, we picked up 3 inches of heavy, wet, sticky snow. Staying warm in the camper is not an issue as long as I have propane. Saturday night, I was awoke by the sound of my refrigerator beeping. Once again, I ran out of fuel in my primary tank. Thankfully, I have a 20-pounder on reserve in the fuel cabinet. It's about that time of year when I will be carrying a 3rd tank as well.
Ice fishing on Sunday was uneventful. I'm going to have to spend a full day on the ice and visit a lake that I'm familiar with. One of the big problems with fishing on the channel is dedicating enough time to fishing and not worrying about camera angles and content. I will pull fish through the ice this season. I promise that! I'm still considering putting out my ice shack near the house.
Some people have been asking for snowstorm videos. I can guarantee I'll be in the camper during this winter's storms.... as long as it lands on a Saturday or Sunday.

The funeral hotdish recipe:
2lbs ground beef
1 diced onion
1 green pepper
1 can whole kernel corn
1 large can stewed tomatoes
1 can tomato soup
2 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
a few cloves of garlic , I didn't have any so I used garlic powder.
a squirt of ketchup to taste and/or
a few tablespoons of tomato paste
a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste.

Im sorry my regular closing is missing from this weeks video. For some reason I received a copyright claim against the closing song thats been used in every single video. I provided the proper documentation showing I have the licensing rights to the song. But the company continued to dispute the claim. My last option was to see legal counsel or trim out the last 20 seconds. So I'll say it here. We will do this again next week! Untill then, be kind, be honest, I'll see you down the road.

I agree!! That company took about 300 bucks out of my pocket! All because of the last 20 seconds of the video. After 2.5 years, the videos are coming close to paying for the weekend....now it's gone. There is nothing I can do about it. Epidemic Sound provided me with someone to contact right away if it happens again. But that doesn't help this time. I completely understand why 99.9% of KZfaqrs have sponcered videos. It's almost impossible to count on advertising revenue alone.

@@KennyOfAllTrades loss of $$ is a total bummer man! Sorry to hear you’re taking a hit like that! Ah yeah, so might be time for you to bring on the sponsorships after all and join the masses. Who knows, might even take your channel to the next level with access to new viewers. I know you’re concerned about losing those who helped get you this. However, I think I’ve said it before…you’re true followers/fans/YT friends will stay by your side and support you! You always have to look out for #1…you!!!

The "No Agenda" podcast does a value for value model. They put their effort into the show and if listeners find value in what they produce then they can contribute time, talent or treasure back. Set up a Patreon account. People already send cards to you and so forth. I think a lot of people would love to chip in a few bucks to say thank you for the value you bring to them every Tuesday. It would help you be less reliant on KZfaqs harsh judgements and I doubt a single one of your regular viewers would begrudge you for having an easy way for them to say thanks for all you do. Everybody knows you're not begging or demanding anything from us.

Love me some funeral hotdish. We call it Grammy Hotdish but its the same concept. I was coyote hunting on Sunday and it was a beautiful morning. My goto for attire for winter hunting is long underwear, no pants and my coveralls. Super warm and comfortable all day. Any day of fishing is better than a day at work. Merry Christmas

Crosslake is where my good friends have a cabin. His grandfather actually built it. The stone fireplace is so beautiful. Beautiful area, even in the winter.

@rudycarlson8245 It stays warm in really cold temps. I've had a few videos last winter where I was out in -25 degree temps. I'm able to keep it at 65 - 70 degrees inside. It will go through a 20-pound tank in 2 days in those temperatures. The floor stays cold. You need to keep socks on. A fan would help to circulate the air. I don't have water in the tanks in the winter. The basement of the camper is insulated. There is a factory fan to keep that area warm, so a person can keep water in the tanks. I've done it before, but the cost of fuel and constant power to keep the basement fan running is substantial. It is a challenge and takes constant supervision. There is a big difference between a "four seasons" rated truck camper and a standard model. But just because a camper says it's four seasons rated doesn't mean it can handle -20 to -40 without modifications. I did a video showing my modifications 2 years ago. As Kenny walks out of the camper, says it's dark outside. 'Let's go check out the the lake". I literally was shaking my head and saying "Noooooooooo", outloud. I thought, this it what it means when they say women live longer. Pitch black. Walking in 22° windy weather towards a lake covered in snow. Then "Let's go check out the ice". All I thought about was that poor food in the oven will not get eaten because Kenny broke through the ice, in the dark, with no life saving equipment for the "just in case".

That's the plan! I'm thinking about putting my ice shack on the lake. It hasn't been out in a few years. Before the channel, I would spend a lot of time in that shanty. Maybe I can incorporate that into a camping video.

The last time i went ice fishing, 1972, the group of us caught 120 trout, bluegill and crappies. The sun came out and we were in short sleeves, also got a good sunburn that day. Thanks for the ride along. Always enjoy it.

That is what ice fishing is, sometimes there is no one home! Used couple of years fish finder and some days there is just nothing, do not waiste your time and move on, but usually it is just same in everywhere whole lake. Ok it is nice to catch fish but it is really nice just be there and enjoy the time! This winter is no ice fishing as I am with the sun whole winter, so no freezing conditions here!

Awesome effort on fishing ! I fished a couple days ago with a cool front headed our way. Figured the fish might be biting , they were ! Sand bass were tearing it up ! Can't tell you how many times I go out and catch nothing but the wonderful feel of being at the waters edge . It truly is my solace from the troubles of this world . . . . Merry Christmas ! I have heard of “funeral potatoes “, but never “funeral hotdish”. Funeral potatoes are a Utah thing. I kinda felt bad for you sitting out on the lake eating a cold sausage, (with NO gloves on!) until you reassured us that was better than a good day of work. The red night was pretty freaky, but kinda cool too. Socked into that camping spot was a relaxing video, and as always, thanks for the drone footage. Just so you know, I don’t think many of us watch you for your fishing skills, although they can be entertaining! Have a great Christmas with your family.

I wish the camera could have captured how odd and creepy that red landscape felt. It was still windy, and I was working on supper, or I would have went out side. I'm sure it would have been a beautiful sunset if the sky's were clear. But it felt like Mars had frozen over. Ps I gotta check out funeral potatoes now!

Lol. I had it up just past the tree level, and the wind completely took it away! I went full speed into the wind, and I was still getting pushed backward. I had to fly with the wind and found a forest road to land on. Thankfully, the drone has a future called " find my drone." It sent me on a little walk, but I got it! That's why there is not much footage from Saturday. Otherwise, I was hoping to get a shot of the snow coming down while flying over the tree tops.

It’s Tuesday…another Kenny video to watch. A couple of things I really enjoy…you love all kinds of weather and watching you make your simple hearty meals. When most “campers” look at the forecast and cancel their plans if it looks iffy, you tend to thrive in the solitude and peace that adverse weather brings. Thanks for what you do…us couch potatoes live vicariously through your weekly adventures. Have a nice Christmas with the family and we’ll see you when you’re back in the woods…. P.s. while ice fishing, instead of jigging, have you used “tip-ups” and fished a bunch of holes at once or is that not allowed in your State?

Great question! In Minnesota, we are only allowed two lines in the water. If I get the house up I'll jig inside and put a sucker minnow on a tip up. I'd love to pickle a northern.

Another most excellent video there KOAT, as Larry said…great drone footage heading to the fishing (skunk) grounds. And as others made mention, great editing…you’ve come along way sir! In Western PA we’d call that dish goulash and adding some cheeses to the tops is pretty yummy too! Merry Christmas to you, Mandi and the girls!!! As always, stay safe out there…..

Merry Christmas Mike! I'm glad to hear you say the editing is looking good. You have been around for a while and have seen the progression of my editing skills (or lack there of). I'm still using the same camera and editing software, but the recording process is finally getting easier for me. It's taken a while, but I'm able to imagine what my final video will look like as I'm recording. I've still got so much to learn.

My camper is fully usable with the slide in like yours. I love it. Super cold or windy? No problem - just leave the slide in. Very nice.

@KennyOfAllTrades I can't post a picture here, but she's a beast. Big 1999 K2500 4x4, 7.4l 454 big block. She can tow a 12klb trailer, but she's so big it's like living in a van with low head clearance 😅. Offroad capable, like your truck, but can only eek out 12mpg at best on the 35in KO2'S. My old 4runner barely got better at half the size, though.

Years ago I became good friends with a coworker who had moved to California from Minnesota. She is the only other person I’ve heard say, “Oof-da!” (which she said often, and told me it’s common in MN).
