The results are in, no more guessing! Eric and I created a Canadian coin test garden and put the Equinox to the test, the results may surprise you. As the manufacture recommends Park mode for new sites, this test was based on those default settings. Does discrimination really make a difference? What about iron bias? Or maybe Park 1 vs Park 2? Sensitivity the reason? My test answered all my questions and confirmed the Equinox can find Canadian coins including our steel core clad. With my results the settings you use will make the difference if your digging them or not. I may be guilty of thinking people were just not digging the jumpy signal or they were just going for the bang ons, this may have never been the case. I’ve attached a video as an audio visual of what is happening.
My conclusion
Park 1 default settings using discrimination. You will not find 2001 and up Nickels, Dimes, loonies or 2012 twoonies and up. They do not come up by a target ID nor audio. Only a double line - -. You can dig quarters 2001-2020 and twoonies minted up to 2012. Unfortunately, in Park 1 all steel core coins are omitted with the exception of quarters. All coins that pre date 2001 will come into the nickel range 13, 14, 15.
Park 1 default setting using all metal. All steel core coins will give you negative numbers only. They will range from -1 to -9 including the quarter that we could see when we used discrimination. The nickel plate is completely omitted.
Park 1 default settings using zero iron bias, the result was the same as above and didn’t make much of a difference.
Park 2 default settings using discrimination. All Steel core coins rang into the positive range from 2 to 17, the tone pitch seems to be set higher and would get your attention. All pre 2001 nickel coins came in within the nickel range.
Park 2 default setting without discrimination. The steel core clad nickels and dimes came into the negatives and positives jumping from -2 to +17 with the exception of the quarter, the same thing accrued in park 1, in all metal the quarter only gave me negative numbers from -2 to -8.
The best mode to find steel core clad is Park 2 using discrimination. I even tested field 2 vs park 2 and I have to say there is a difference and Park 2 is the best setting by far.
Thank you so much for watching!

I consider these tutorials as the benchmark and a 'must-watch' series for all Equinox users. I wish Minelab would make a version with an additional mode. An open mode without presets, added amplification factors, built-in discrimination features, etc. One that is totally user-based and programmable for the seasoned pro with a trained ear and can decipher the Equinox language. To push the search to new bounds.

I also wrote a book on my experiences and what I’ve learned about the machine in the past 4 years. I have a group on Facebook called Minelab Canada Metal Detecting. At the top of the page I pinned up the book. It’s free for everyone, I wrote it to help people get through the tough learning curve I had. Yay, I’m happy, I had to get to the bottom of the yes it can, no it can’t find clad and settle it once and for all ha ha! I always used modes 2 and never knew this is why I eventually dug clad. I was expecting something more complicated than just the switch of a mode 😂 I love my field 2 mode but if I’m in an area there is clad, I will definitely be using Park 2 😁 the test was getting really long but even field 2 doesn’t react as well to the clad as Park 2 👍

We tried field but I was unsure testing beach mode in minimum mineralized soil.. I’m waiting for Eric to take me to a salty ocean beach lol.. I accidentally used it the other day.. I had the highest solid signal that rang in at 37-38 I couldn’t even guess what it could have been. It was a brass horse bridal or bit ring lol.. usually it wouldn’t ring that high in field mode, hmmm have you tried clad with beach mode? 😊just by that ring I dug, I’ll assume things must ring in at a higher target ID..

Good idea for a video. I found what works best for me on Canadian coins was using a single frequency, particularly 40khz. It gives a “digable” signal on all them I find. It’s my go to at parks and schools

That’s fair. I was just saying if it’s Canadian clad you’re looking for, 40khz will give you the best signal. Obviously we all bought the equinox for the multi frequency capabilities, and want to get the most out of the machine. I really haven’t watched many of your videos, and don’t know what you already know about finding Canadian clad. I wouldn’t normally comment on videos, but you didn’t try single frequency in this video, so I thought I would mention it in hopes it would help.

I should have mentioned using 40khz in this video but it may be a video on it's own. I did record something but I couldn't prove the cons with the test bed we made. I decided to keep them out until I can dig a deeper test garden and see how it reacts to deep silver and other conductors, more testing is needed lol. I'm happy you brought this up! I wanted to add it but like I said, the last thing I needed was people calling me on the cons of using this machine in one frequency :)

For years now I’ve been trying to debunking the myth that this machine couldn’t find our new clad coins. I would find them but until this test I didn’t know why I could but others couldn’t. I saw someone doing a test proving it couldn’t find them. After doing my own test, It gave me a much better understanding why, all this time it was mode 1 vs 2 😂

Great video guys! I’ve been trying to learn clad on the 800. Great advice with the Park 2 on the clad! What do you like about field 2 that makes it your go to? I’ve played with it a bit but never used it much. I practice a lot at the village lake park as I’ve pretty much hunted out all the high tones to the point where I had only 2 pennies in 3.5hrs last night. I generally go for the older stuff there but a few times, I just switched to 40Khz to shoot clad and see what happens. Funny thing is that I dug an 1850-60’s brass steamboat brooch doing that but I had probably just overlooked it before as it rang up 16-18. I read one of your other comments about clad on Park 2 being 12-15. It’s tough here as almost all bottle caps are old and ring up 11-13. There are various types of pulltabs and they ring in from 14-18. The entire place also has nails everywhere, including modern and square so I’m constantly getting the nail tips falsing. The square ones false even worse! Since the place has fill everywhere, I’ve been experimenting to getting the deepest reach I can. I tried Park 1 with Recovery speed 4. I was surprised to pull a 1920 fishscale and a few other older crusty pennies that I had been over before but I was going even slower and more careful than before. I also was trying maxing it out to 25 to see what would happen as I usually go as high as 22. I’ve dug 2 KGV nickels here so far but I know there has to be more. The first I got with the ATPro and the other I had dug a signal around the old oak tree which is thick with trash. When I dig a plug in a really trashy spot I dig deep and pinpoint out every signal and sometimes I pull out a good masked item. Twice I removed nails around another old tree to reveal 1940’s wheat pennies that even the 6” on high recovery speed could not hear. Thanks for taking the time to do this very informative tutorial that so many frustrated Canadian detectorists will be so grateful for! Take care, ATB& HH!

Hi Kep, lots to cover, coins that predate 2001 come into the 12-15 range. Clad is our steel core which reacts differently and has a range from 1-17 jumps low high low high only with Park 2 using discrimination. Now with the equinox I love all target I’d numbers. In 50 tones you will see a difference, pull tabs jump by one number or pretty solid and are not low high low high like our clad. The more you use it the more you start hearing these differences. If you’re detecting old sites you want to dig the lower tones, tombac buttons come in low, 9, flat buttons, depending on size can ring into the nickel and pull tab range but the tone pitch you hear can also be different. I won’t lie it’s extremely overwhelming to learn, but once you start catching on to the differences this machine is incredible! You have to dig more than high tones.. I found a really deep slick copper that rang in 15-17, not sure if it was on edge.. I dug fishies at 17. Now recovery speed, understand the lower you bring it, the slower you need to swing, you get more depth but less separation, if you’re in high trash you want a fast recovery to get maximum separation which is more important than depth in those circumstances. If there was a nail and coin side by side, you hit the nail first, the machine won’t recover in time to hear the coin. I often use 6, it has a good balance of depth and separation.. if I was in a ploughed field with less iron or trash lowering would get you more depth. The reason I prefer field 2, I mostly hunt older sites with less new trash, I dig less rusty bottle caps and pull tabs in field, it has lower pitch on tin and aluminum sounds wobbly I think. I have more experience with field than park. Since doing my tutorials, field 2 sounded like the mode I needed for my sites. I understood mode 2 picked up a larger range of targets, itty bitty to relics. Field one is set to reject more and I’ve always preferred to use my machine wide open. That’s why it’s my go too, it just seems better in high iron trash but I need more experience using Park to really compare. Sensitivity now, in high trash you will amplify all the falsifying, not recommended. The only time I’ve hunted in 25 was in BC where there was zero EMI, but too high for nail infested areas. I keep mine between 18-23, 20 is my default, if I get a squeaker I boost it to 23 and re swing.. The falsifying iron squeak, the way around that is, if you watch the nickel in this video, it reacts similar like a falsifying nail. The squeak high signal happens as the side of your coil hits the tip of a spike, nail or wire. This signal is hard to isolate because we are trying to get the centre of the coil to reproduce it. if we work hard enough you can reproduce it.. but then you pinpoint, its going to slightly shift over the iron instead of the tip. Once you recognize that falsifying signal you’ll stop digging them. Whesh, let me know if I left anything out 🤪 hope this helps 😊
@kepvalley
@kepvalley 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for all of that! 👍 You’re so amazing with your generosity of knowledge! It will take me some time to digest but that is great! I’m out hunting right now at the Barber dime rest stop site north of me and I’m incorporating some of your tips. For this one though, I want to coin shoot old stuff so I’m sticking to 19 and above tones. Pretty sure it’s been mostly hunted as very few pennies. So far today got a 1920 wheat, 1951 George dime and a sweet toy gun that I thought was likely a pop can but there were just differences that made me dig it and glad I did! I really hope we can get out on a collab hunt this year. I really haven’t done any except the short one with Liz last year but I did get out with Scuba Sonia in Toronto in early March before the emergency lockdown. She was in town for work from the US and I was there for work as well. Any plans for Digstock? I’m going if it’s not canceled. @RelicDirtyhands
@RelicDirtyhands 4 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, Eric and I were just talking about that, condition in a test bed and real life situations can be really different, I would have to do many test, i noticed the positioning of the nails make a difference, like the nickel plate of clad coins, the edge of the coil will catch, the same goes with iron, it will catch the end of a iron spike, nail, wire and give you a falsing squeak. You will notice it’s a little difficult to isolate. When there is an old coin in the mix of nails, you will notice you can wiggle and get that high bleep to repeat and visually never moves. The falsification signal seems to happen when the edge of the coil gets close, micro wiggling the coil will tell you more, but it still possible to micro wiggle the falsifying iron tip, if you pinpoint, you will also notice if the false signal will want to shift over, pinpoint is taking you over the target, instead of the false signal 🤪 not easy to explain.. if you take a nail, swing the coil hitting it with the side of your coil vs the tip.. you will hear that false signal.. in high iron, slow down, reduce your sensitivity to 16-20, sensitivity too high will really amplify all the falsifying.. good luck, I hope this helps.. oh at old sites, field 2, zero discrimination, zero iron bias, a high enough recovery speed is a good way to go 👍 you may dig more but, you will learn the small differences 👍

Relic Dirtyhands I don’t have a 600 I use the 800 but each mode is using each of the solid frequencies weighted in a different way so if you’re using a 600 the20 and the 40 wouldn’t be included in your weight for each mode so it may be different
@RelicDirtyhands
@RelicDirtyhands 4 жыл бұрын
Debbie explained it from Minelab, in multi it's not using the solid 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40. In multi it's using a combination of frequencies. She also stated both the 600 and 800 use the same combination in Multi. It's like the secret recipe. Minelab will not share the exact frequencies they use, but the machine offers you those 5 frequencies on the 800 as single frequencies use.

Relic Dirtyhands Yes that is what I was saying multi users all of the single frequencies together 800 has 20 and 40 which is part of the multi so if you don’t have it it won’t be included if you watch the video annoys cancel when hooked up to an oscilloscope you can see how noise cancelling adjust the weight on multi and you can clearly see the 20 and 40 kHz band so if you don’t have it The weight will be different

Detecting Unknown Paul Robert do you agree or disagree that both 600 and 800 have the 20 and 40 kHz that weight the same in multi?.. weighting means putting more emphasis on a certain frequency. From mode 1 and 2 the weighting is different, I’ve seen the video you are talking about, but this test was not done on the 600 as a comparison, therefore I trust what’s been said by minelab unless I see something that proves this wrong.

Almost Laurie almost. But I over came the urge. Left my thin wallet in me pocket and no equinox. You could sell refrigerators to Eskimos.

I had no idea Canadian tones were so low. I have found a few pennies.

Pennies always sound great except the new clad ones. Now you know how the clad comes in :) Park 2 using discrimination and you count should get higher :) Good luck!

Hey guys try using single frequency 40khz and watch what happens what you need to remember is our change is just coated garbage

I’ve been telling people about 40khz on clad for years,.. there are pros and cons using 40, including the 600 doesn’t have 40 as a single frequency option, this was to prove you can find clad in multi with the Equinox. You just need to use park 2 with discrimination and clad sounds great.

All the coins are falling in the junk range though. If you want to find Canadian coins with nox800 I guess you have to dig everything. I switched from the ATPro to the Nox800 last year. My clad count dropped to nothing. I find pennies, and I've done well with silver....but clad...nothing. I'm not sure the the handful of change is worth the frustration of digging piles and piles of junk.

I was told the Atpro has a hard time on clad, clad being coins that date 2001 and up. So many people don’t notice they dig 2001 down. Use Park two with discrimination and dig 13,14,15.. you will dig lots of coins. I have a feeling you’re digging 19 and up. Pre 2001 coins are clear signals, gold rings, relics like flat buttons come in that range. If you’re not digging coins, you are missing the gold or relics too. I can call a piece of aluminum over silver., the machine has its own language and you can tell junk to treasure 😊
