A lot to think about with that CNC. I’m a retired programmer, so not intimidated. The issue for me is entry cost. Back to the lathe for me. 😊. Great vid. THANKS 👍

Excellent video! My previous career was in the quilting world. When machine quilting came along there was quite an uproar that it was cheating. Until the general quilting world understood that there's great skill involved. Now of course, few people hand quilt. And the long arm quilting machine business is where the growth is in the industry. Also, because quilters finish more quilts more fabric etc. is sold. Now that I'm making cuckoo clocks here in the US (was designing and importing them from Germany) I'm at that conundrum of hand carving versus CNC. I took a clock with birds carved by a world champion bird carver to a Wild Birds Unlimited trade show. Not one shop owner commented on the birds being hand carved. Didn't matter to them. Quite a surprise!

You can always switch bits for different parts. Also if you wanted to b real fine on a special piece you can rough out with the CNC and follow up with knives/gouges. I just got a CNC (used) and I also have a laser engraver. I plan on experimenting with combining tools and techniques as well as using nitrogen or CO2 to prevent burning.

In 1969 our typing class only had manual(we didn't turn on or off) typewriters and you had to "throw" the carriage back with the lever to start a new line, lol. But, comptuter stupid I can still type 65 words per minute...Great video Shawn(lunch over)...rr

It's Funny to say we had to learn how to turn on the computer but you're right. I remember using a Mac for the first time and trying to find the button to eject the floppy drive (only clouds back then were in the sky) and going through the same process of "Why would I put the floppy in the trash can, doesn't that erase the info?" In the end i had to ask the girl beside me how do I do it. lol

That double v at the bottom issue. Did you have a stop depth set for that tool used for the name font, when it may not have been needed? Not allowing the v bit to go deep enough to properly clean up the bottom of the v? Or, Vectric Aspire has a v tool correction tool for adjusting this issue. Because the v bit is not truley 60 degrees. In newer versions than what I have, I think.
@wortheffort
@wortheffort 5 жыл бұрын
I tried it both ways. Remember I was battling the depth issue. Don't want to carve twice though might be the way it works out in the end.
@rosskearney9467

To fix the burning issue you could slow the rpm down or speed up the feed rate and if neither of those is possible run a multipass as the tip doesn't have a lot to cut but the deeper you go the more material the bit has to remove and as the bit gets wider the speed the cutting edge is moving at increases greatly. Hope this helps

Watched your video and thought it was great. Two questions: First - what CNC machine are you using and what is it's maximum dimensions of the work piece L X W? I do chip carving by hand and my largest work is a lazy susan 18" in dia. Second - I use Corel Draw to generate vector diagrams. Corel Draw works with bit maps as well as vectors. Would it work on the CNC machine or do I need to acquire "Aspire"? Will any application that has vector capability work with a CNC machine?
@wortheffort

Inventables - you can get them differnt sizes. Almost any program will work. Some better than others. I'd stick to vector programs vs bitmap or pixels.

making the first of a production run. In most cases takes a tremendous amount of time compared to a single hand made item. The difference is not only that. Every hand made item is unique even when copied. That's why experts can detect forgeries. A mass produced item is just the same as the next item and in most cases is not unique and when copied with enough knowledge of the programing involved in the production of the first one, is not unique and in most cases can't be differentiated from the original. While most of us can't afford "originals". There will always be those willing to pay for one.

I really like your videos, but please consider getting a better (clip on) microphone. It will significantly increase audio quality and reduce background noise. Wireless one will not get in the way when you work. Check out ElectroBOOM's video "Quality Audio Recording for Video", he explained it completely, and in "Video Recording with Rode Shotgun and Wireless Lavalier Microphones" he demonstrates two of the best solutions

It's not that the hand tool one take more skills. I will agree that the skills are different. However the hand carved one is truly one of a kind. It is very unlikely that two hand carved pieces are going to have the exact same cuts and tool marks. In the CNC it is not a one of a kind, sure the grain is going to slight variations from piece to piece but the cuts and tool marks are not really going to vary. If you are trying to sell something as a collectible one of a kind piece of art then hand carved is better than CNC. If you are selling production pieces that you are batching out then obviously the CNC is the way to go. If you are making a piece of wall art to show and sell in a fine art gallery there would be higher value placed on hand carved piece of art compared to a CNC carving because the CNC carving could be replicated once you have the design file compared to a hand carving. I only bring this up because personally I am more interested in using wood as a fine art medium rather than doing production woodworking. Undercutting relief carvings for more dramatic shadows is not really done well on a CNC unless you get a 5 axis CNC machine but those would be prohibitively expensive and large for most small shops or woodcarving studios.

what annoys me is when someone calls something handmade when a CNC carved it. Its not handmade just because your hand touched the wood, and you created the design on a computer. That's like calling something made in a production line handmade because at some point, a person's hand touched something.

alaskankare I did not say the I hand carved the ones done on cnc but I did do all the joinery by hand. Then again I also used a table saw and thicknesser so.... Everyone is allowed to draw that line.
